“Perfect! Wolgan Valley is a truely amazing experiance.”
Reviewed May 16, 2010

Having been to other notable resorts that have not met my expectations, we departed for Wolgan Valley hoping this time would be different. And different it was. From the moment you arrive, you feel calm, relaxed and in awe of the masterpiece in front of you.
The detail and effort that have gone into this beautiful resort appear effortless. Details such as the original fence posts from the property forming the reception wall, to pieces of metal found in the original homestead being turned into charming pieces of art and furniture, this resort is truely unique.
The scenery is spectacular and never fails to impress no matter you look. The buildings and suites also impress. The suites are very large and spacious, but features like the two-way fireplace and over-sized ottoman make them warm and cosy. Not to mention the Nespresso machine! Ladies, who needs a walk-in robe when you have your own dressing room! And then there is the bathroom, complete with slate tiles and a walk through shower with sunlight!
The mountain bikes and boot cupboard on the porch are the perfect finishing touches. Although each suite has it's very own swimming pool, the resort pool is a standout.
The food was amazing and Ben matched it perfectly with local wines.
The staff were fantastic, lead by GM Joost and made you feel welcome and looked after.
I was lucky enough to have my boyfriend propose while we were there, I couldn't think of a more perfect place for it to happen! Now, it is not a want to go back, it is a need!

I was fortunate enough to spend 2 nights at the Emirates Wolgan Valley Resort. Being in the Travel Industry I was very eager to stay at the Resort and see what it had to offer.

I was blown away by the whole experience (which is what it is). Right from the start upon entrance into the foyer of the Resort it was all sensational. I haven't stayed in too many high end properties like this one but the attention to detail was quite prominent.

The service of the staff such as Katherine, Gyan and Raef was absolutely excellent. They really did go above and beyond and made our stay there extremely enjoyable. The food at the Resort was also outstanding. Some of the Lobster I tried here is making my mouth water just thinking about it.

Its very quiet around the Valley which is just what we were after. Really felt like you were in a different world as you didn't hear any traffic or many other people.

Wolgan Valley is an amazing place to stay and only a short and easy drive from Sydney - the website suggests 3 hours but we took 2.5 hours driving along the Bells Line of Road - it would definitely be longer if you were to drive through Katoomba etc. The resort is nestled in a very beautiful valley surrounded by stunning escarpments. There are no cars near the resort apart from the ones that ferry you from where your car is parked at the front gate (about 5 minutes' drive from the resort buildings). Golf carts are the form of transport when needed - or the mountain bikes that are located at your front door. It is extremely peaceful.
The suites are all in individual 'houses' each with its own indoor swimming pool. The suits are beautifully appointed and in harmony with the surrounding bushland. There is a huge attention to detail - a large assortment of teas and coffees with yummy biscuits etc in the suite, along with binoculars, a sketch pad, coloured pencils and a pencil sharpenener !!!!. I think the bed is the best bed I have ever slept on - I could have stayed in bed all day!!

All meals are included and the food was faultless - a great choice and largely using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. There is also a large range of local wines (included) as well as all the usual wines from other regions and overseas(not included)
The staff was great - all very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable, especially Elwin who took us on our bushwalk.
I have nothing but good things to say about this resort - a truly world class establishment easily reached from Sydney - a helipad is on the property if you are pressed for time!
I will return!

getting there is a challenge - easy until the last bumpy stretch of dirt road - 16k of it. My poor car! Don't do it in anything low slung. Once there, the location is outstanding, beautiful valley. Hotel a little odd. Rooms badly laid out - you can see them from your room and they spoil the view. You are very close to your neighbour when sitting outside; I expect more space for that money. If it was full it'd be busier than I'd like.
Rooms are very luxurious, but again, I wouldn't expect to pay for the minibar at those prices when they claim to be " inclusive" ( 'all' word missing!).
Pool amazing, comfy loungers, very pretty. Breakfast and lunch outstanding, dinner too fancy for our taste - all foams and emulsions. Inclusive wines nice.
Tours good, guides interesting and engaged. Don't know about spa as too busy to fit us in - although less than 20% occupied - book early if spa important for you!!
All in all a really nice place, friendly staff, would go in a heartbeat if 25% of the price; at the size of the bill its just not good enough. I am happy to pay alot if I get value - this one didn't do it for me.

The rooms (really a series of small cottages) are the best laid out and most thoughtfully appointed of anywhere we have ever stayed. The experience of the place is on a par with Post Ranch Inn, The Point and Villla Cimbrone. The staff are a great team. The local produce is exceptional and wonderfully integrated in the excellent menus. Try the wines from Orange. But the real star is the Wolgan Valley itself. It will be revelatory for local as well as international visitors. And if you are lucky enough to live in Sydney this is the ideal getaway. An easy three hour drive to luxury. And Wolgan Valley Resort is well worth the money. Two nights was good. Three would have been better.

Like another reviewer, I was also at Wolgan Valley for NYE 09/10. We had a blast.

#Getting There#
It took us about three hours to drive from Sydney. The last hour you take pretty slowly on the gravel roads. I would recommend only doing this in a 4WD or rental car as most of the road isn't paved but as a friend said to us once in peru during some travel shenanigan (in her french accent)..."it is all part of zee ex-peer-eee-onz"

#Location#
Gob-smackingly awesome. Nestled in a deep valley in between two enormous rock faces sits the resort. I hate using the word "resort" as it conjures up all those nasty travel experiences i like to forget (waterslide now or after complimentary buffet sausages?). There is a two story homestead building that has restaurant / cafe etc and then everyone stays in units around the homestead. Website has pretty good photos. It all blends in well to the scenery and best of all there is no 10 story structure in the middle of the area destroying the landscape and feel.

#Accom#
Gorgeous units. Best I've ever stayed in. Each one has its own lap pool and stunning views of the valley. They are all spaced a decent way apart so you won't hear anything going on with your neighbors. Bathroom has deep tub, open shower and big wash area. Beds and rest are to be expected in a place of this type. I would also mention that walk -in-closet is huge and we put a cot/crib in there and made it a "second bedroom" for our 2yo. There is also an outdoor deck (w fly screen) which we had lunch on one day. One thing that was a bit strange is the vents that heat or cool the room are right next to windows so when you draw the blinds the hot/cold air from vents gets a bit lost behind the curtain. Rooms seem to keep their temp pretty well so we didn't use but seems like a bit of a design hickey.

#Chow#
Always a bit of a risk at a place so secluded like this where you are gonna be eating at restaurant/cafe facilities thru your stay (too far to go back to Lithgow for a meal). However, food is fantastic. We had the oppty to chat w chef a few times during our stay. 80pc +/- of the food is sourced locally so don't be disappointed if you don't see chilean sea bass and moreton bay bugs on the menu...on the flip side, expect to eat fresh and refined dishes that represent local fare (which is pretty darn good)..beef, rabbit, lamb, dairy, eggs etc. Our NYE tasting menu (incl cured rainbow trout, quail egg ravioli, goose liver parfait, roasted guinea fowl, venison loin) could easily have been a $250/head fare at a michelin star joint in NYC. Similarly, the kitchen was also happy to cook up a bowl of pasta spiked with veggies for our daughter.

#Other stuff#
We didn't really do many of the activities offered as we were only there for a few days but there seemed to be a lot if you are into outdoor activities. We chilled by the pools, waded around the streams and walked around looking at the wildlife.

One important thing to mention is the ominous note on the website about "kids under age of seven are discouraged". We called beforehand and they said kids are welcome. We had a crib in our room when we arrived and found that the staff went out of their way to accommodate our daughter. She had a blast. Maybe the website should be rewritten to say "bratty loud mouthed kids that complain about the dvd selection and lack of cheeseburgers at the cafe will be fed to the local dingo population. Kids that are reasonably well behaved will be treated like royalty". We also had a babysitter (Ros) organized by front desk for two nights. She was awesome.

OOps - almost forgot to mention no cellphone coverage at resort (manager said it was coming soon) but there is wifi in rooms (skype saves again) and at the main building.

We were part of a large group that stayed at Wolgan over the Dec-Jan new year period for a 40th birthday on the 30th and new year's. I and my partner stayed four days and it was superb. We were expecting very good food but were taken aback by the sheer quality of produce, care and attention to detail in many truly superb meals. Vension, local cheeses, beef... all some of the stand out's. The chef has created some superb menus and trained a team to deliver consistently outstanding dining across the day. We rode horses, mountain bikes (for the keen do the ride to Newnes pub and back on the old rail line), walked, used spa and lounged. The resort organised for us to ride/bike/walk/4x4 to a picnic lunch in the most amazing valley with it's own deck, we had drinks one night on a hillside lookout and had two extraordinary degustation dinners for the celebrations. The real quality of this experience is attention to detail. The respect to heritage, the restored homestead, the antique period pieces in the main building and suites. The staff - a mix of locals and internationally experienced - were also a rare blend of authentic x nothing is too much trouble, personified by the GM. The resort is new and needs time to slowly blend in to the landscape and a few things are soon to open - tennis courts and the horse stables (horses will be big part of the resort and that side needs settling in too) but we cannot fault our stay. It is good value for money given what you get. This is finally a resort in Australia to match and exceed the very best of intimate, luxury, outdoor ultra high end resorts of the world we've stayed in.
