The Lodge at Black Rapids
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 26, 2012

First off, you must understand how far off the grid this property is located. The craftsmanship of the lodge is over the top. With plenty of windows for viewing no matter if you are eating dinner or resting in your spacious room. The chef "Chris" should have his own restaurant. There are no bad meals at this lodge. Whether you want to curl up and read a good book or get out on the snow machines this place is a five star spa for your mind. As an Alaskan resident, I can tell you that Black Rapids is true Alaska no matter what the season.

Room Tip: Second Floor facing west are the two best rooms in the lodge

My husband and I were fortunate enough to be placed in Room 4 - the Glacier Room. The views from this room are amazing! The only thing that could have made it better would have been the northern lights - but alas, the night was not clear enough.
Back to the room... It was clean, beautifully decorated, and extremely comfortable. There is a thermostat in the room that allowed us to adjust the temperature to our comfort level. There's a small balcony that would be ideal in the summer (or a warmer fall/spring night), but we used it this time just to keep our beverages cold. :-)
Several of our friends were also staying at the lodge, and we were all able to scatter about the building and find comfortable areas to sit and chat either near a warm fire (downstairs) or on the comfy and spacious couches on the second floor. Our friends had lunch and dinner there (we were not so lucky) and were raving about it for two days! We did have breakfast and were happy with the flavor and quality of the home-cooked meal.
If you find yourself driving by the lodge - stop and stay. It's worth it! Staff were extremely friendly and it felt like we were staying with close friends or family (in a good way).
*You do need to know that Rowdy, the owners' fur-kid (of the K9 type), will come and hang out with you during your visit, especially if you're by the wood stove or dining table. He'll even go skiing with you!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Glacier Room - #4, and it was amazing. Perfect for a couple. I didn't go into t...

The lodge was very beautiful. The room was very clean and had a comfy bed and beautiful views. There is no menu so you eat what they are fixing. I'm a picky eater and the food was very good. Their dog "Rowdy" loves to go on walks with the guests. A very homey type feeling lodge.

We stayed on July 29 for one night but wish we had stayed longer. Driving the Richardson highway is wonderful, so scenic and this lodge is like a first class Oasis in the middle of all that beauty. The accomodations were wonderful and very clean with all the amenities and Annie, Mike and Rowdy treat everyone like visiting old friends. If you tour Alaska don't miss the Richardson Highway and the Lodge at Black Rapids - you will not be disappointed!

Room Tip: Get one of the 2nd floor rooms - great views and lovely guest sitting area.

The lodge is a nicely constructed building with scenic views of the landscape and sky. The furniture and fixtures are also well appointed. Unfortunately, the communication by the owner regarding a billing error, discovered after departure, was very poor. I emailed her twice over a three week period about an incorrect charge but she refused to reply, despite the fact that her website confirmed receipt of my messages. Subsequently, I was forced to dispute the incorrect bill with my credit card issuer to rectify her error. This was a disappointing way to end an otherwise nice visit.

If you visit this lodge, it will likely be a pleasant experience. But be cognizant of possible billing issues that will be quite troublesome to resolve.

We stayed there the night of June 10,2012
Our room was immaculate, the shower was custom made,

The dinner and breakfast we had were great. We stopped here on our drive from Valdez figuring
with all the scenic views we did not want to drive to Fairbanks in one day. I am really glad we did.
The lodge is fabulous.
It is built from wood beams and what a beautiful job was done. Annie and Mike were gracious hosts.

Will stay again when we return next year.

Room Tip: West side, open view, stayed in the Wild River room

Myself and my husband stayed at The Lodge on our recent trip to Alaska. We can highly recommend a stay there. There is a fantastic atmosphere as soon as you walk through the door. Both Mike and Annie are a very welcoming, homely couple and provide an excellent service. Our room was very comfortable and the view of the mountains was amazing. If you should get the opportunity to stay there, you must ask Annie to perform a few songs in the evening! We would highly recommend. The only fault was that we didn't have time to stay there longer!

Room Tip: All rooms would be good
