“Scenic building but be cognizant of possible billing issues”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

The lodge is a nicely constructed building with scenic views of the landscape and sky. The furniture and fixtures are also well appointed. Unfortunately, the communication by the owner regarding a billing error, discovered after departure, was very poor. I emailed her twice over a three week period about an incorrect charge but she refused to reply, despite the fact that her website confirmed receipt of my messages. Subsequently, I was forced to dispute the incorrect bill with my credit card issuer to rectify her error. This was a disappointing way to end an otherwise nice visit.

If you visit this lodge, it will likely be a pleasant experience. But be cognizant of possible billing issues that will be quite troublesome to resolve.

We stayed there the night of June 10,2012
Our room was immaculate, the shower was custom made,

The dinner and breakfast we had were great. We stopped here on our drive from Valdez figuring
with all the scenic views we did not want to drive to Fairbanks in one day. I am really glad we did.
The lodge is fabulous.
It is built from wood beams and what a beautiful job was done. Annie and Mike were gracious hosts.

Will stay again when we return next year.

Room Tip: West side, open view, stayed in the Wild River room

Myself and my husband stayed at The Lodge on our recent trip to Alaska. We can highly recommend a stay there. There is a fantastic atmosphere as soon as you walk through the door. Both Mike and Annie are a very welcoming, homely couple and provide an excellent service. Our room was very comfortable and the view of the mountains was amazing. If you should get the opportunity to stay there, you must ask Annie to perform a few songs in the evening! We would highly recommend. The only fault was that we didn't have time to stay there longer!

Room Tip: All rooms would be good

The Lodge stands on its own in a peaceful, scenic location, close to a river and snow covered mountains. The design and construction of the building are in line with traditional Alaskan methods; all the internal timber is amazing, and the room at the top of the spiral staircase even has its own specially designed stained glass windows. The Lodge provides a haven from the usual tourist-overrun hotels. The rooms were comfortable and cosy, and the food wonderful. We received a lovely welcome, and the personal service offered made us feel like visiting family rather than hotel guests. As visitors from the UK we appreciated staying somewhere other than the usual characterless hotels, and our stay at the Lodge really completed the full "Alaska experience" for us. We recommend finding time to do the trails behind the Lodge - so quiet and remote.

My husband & I are cross country/backcountry skiiers, and have made two trips now to the Lodge at Black rapids for spring skiing. The lodge is in a great location to access a lot of amazing off-track skiing, and they have also developed a couple routes for snowshoers & skiiers who want a shorter, less strenuous route. The lodge is beautiful, built by the owners Annie&Mike Hopper, timber frame construction, Alaska-style yet also with elegant details. Great food and a a warm welcome from Annie & Mike makes this a great spot for an off-season getaway.

Wonderful food cooked by both hosts, Annie and Michael. They also provided after dinner entertainment in the form of a comedienne from Fairbanks. Hilarious. The rooms are super comfortable and they provide the best in creature comforts. Egyptian cotton towels in the bathroom, silky high thread count sheets on the excellent bed, a dog (Rowdy) to accompany you on your hike. They made us feel like family and we can't wait to meet there again.

Room Tip: Room 2 on the main floor has a large balcony

The Lodge At Black Rapids is a serene escape, nestled in between stunning mountains and distant, roaring river. Not only is the surrounding view of rural Alaska fantastic, but the service and overall quality of the lodge is overwhelmingly welcoming and comforatable. The entire facility is brimming with beautiful, rustic decorations, and the surrounding woods and mountains create the illusion of being absolutely isolated. The lodge also serves as a great place to go for a wildlife filled trek, or a hike down by the rapids. Although the drive from Fairbanks, Alaska is not short, the lodge makes up for this in every respect. The quality of family that is created by the owners, Mike and Annie Hopper, makes up for going out of your way. Not only is the lodge and it's owners perfectly equipped to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable, but it supplies the solice that only being extremely distant from civilization can create. I would recomend this retreat for anyone looking for a quiet weekend away from the husstle and busstle of everyday life.
