Hato Verde is a lovely smaller hacienda at the foot of the Cotopaxi volcano. The owners Cesar and Maria have remodeled the historical main building into a cozy guest house with six rooms; the annex building where we stayed has another three rooms. Our room had a very nice flair with natural stone walls, nice furnishings and our own fireplace which was lighted every evening.
Probably the best thing about the hacienda is the very personal approach of Cesar and Maria who really take wonderful care of their guests. We spent the early evenings in front of the huge fire place in the spacious living room, having a coffee and chatting with the family. We felt more like friends of the family than hotel guests. In addition, Cesar took us on a wonderful trip to the highlands to see the Quilotoa, a wonderful crater lake on 4,000 meters. And don't be surprised if people recognize your hosts and get their photo taken with him: Cesar used to be well-known as a rallye driver.
