“A welcoming hotel great for a relaxing weekend away”
Reviewed December 27, 2012

On a cold and wet December weekend, the Ferrycarrig hotel was ideal for that quiet and relaxing weekend break that we wanted before Christmas. From the bedroom with its view over the estuary, the great breakfast and food in the restaurant, a cosy bar with open fires and a decent leisure centre, it was difficult to find a reason to venture out into that rain. And you get the feel that both management and staff at the hotel want you to make the most of your stay - there is plenty of information provided on local attractions (of which there is many), a general friendliness from staff at breakfast and special attention for kids.
The hotel is very child friendly but not in a way that the hotel is so catered for kids that the hotel is unfriendly for adults. Instead the hotel provides facilities for kids and throughout the hotel politely reminds us adults to 'supervise' our kids which seems to have worked this weekend. The hotel also additional touches for those with young kids like a kids food storage and prep area and proper matresses in the cots, which isn't always the case in hotels.
We opted for a junior suite on this occasion but it seems that all rooms overlook the estuary and some have balconies, which would be good on a brighter weekend.
The hotel itself is about 3km outside Wexford Town and its a good base to explore the area including south into Waterford. We didn't get to try any restaurants in the area this time as we landed late on the first night and had a very good dinner in the hotel the second night.
The impression that I had on leaving the Ferrycarrig was better than I had expected from the website. Whilst I knew the hotel was well located on the edge of the Slaney river, I thought that the hotel from the outside looked like it was a typical 'outside town' that would not have much character. However, the hotel is very welcoming and personal and I will definitely be back soon.

Just back from a two night stay at the Ferrycarrig, 2 adults and 2 children. Staff were very friendly. Room was lovely, warm and clean with a great view out onto the Slaney and huge Christmas tree. Leisure Centre was fabulous. Great Baby Prep room that has microwave, microwave steriliser, normal plug in steriliser, food/bottle heater, fridge and kettle, extremely handy facility that I've never encountered before. Public areas were nice and comfortable. Lovely breakfast with plenty of choice. Only fault was service in bar for food was extremely slow, waited half an hour at 2.30pm for soup and sandwiches. Otherwise we had a fabulous stay and would definitely recommend a stay here

Having spent the last two days at your Hotel, my Wife and I experienced one of the most enjoyable mini breaks we've had in a long time. We were there from Friday afternoon 'til Sunday noon. We found the staff very accommodating and pleasant to deal with. The Slaney suite was so so nice and so much room. And what a pleasant surprise to find a jacuzzie (is that how to spell it?) in the bathroom. The food was excellent and the staff serving it great. We certainly will return and not in the too distant future. I would highly recommend your hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for the Slaney suite

We have just returned from our third trip and our last to the Ferrycarrig Hotel, we were very disappointed with our weekend, the hotel has really disimproved over the last 2 years, it looks run down, needs some TLC in the public areas most of all. The smell of urine as you walk into the banqueting suite has to be smelt to be believed, like a public mens toilet Yuck. The bar food was just ok and cool. On the good side, the staff are really friendly and helpful in reception and the bar and restaurant and the music in the bar was really good and we enjoyed it a lot. But unfortunately we will not return.

From the moment of arrival, until we left everything worked so smoothly yet so relaxed we hardly noticed it. The link with the Festival Opera was impeccable. We learnt much about three operas which we would not normally experience. This experience can be unreservedly recommended.

Stayed here in November for 1 night. Bought a voucher on a deal website for €75. This deal included one night bed and breakfast, a welcome drink, late checkout (2pm) and €20 off a meal in the restaurant, all for 2 people.

We arrived at around 4.30pm and given our room key and welcome drink voucher. On entering the room I have to say I was a little disappointed by the quality of the room. The hotel is rated as a 4 star but the bathroom, for me, really let it down.

The bathroom was very basic. Some of the things I didnt like was that the shower curtain was fabric which I would not think was the most hygenic. The shower was very dated with a VERY old style control. Also it did not stay hot for very long, kept going from WARM to COLD and didnt really heat up much again. Also there was no rubber bath mat. (it said in the welcome folder you could ring the housekeeping department to have one supplied but I feel it should be automatically supplied). Also the bath taps were very grimey along with the toilet handle, very dated. The most weird/worrying bit of the bathroom however was the ELECTRICAL INTERNET SOCKET which was on the wall BESIDE THE BATH!!!! How the hell did that pass safety standards?????

We went to the restaurant for dinner. It was a quiet time of the year so there were very few people in the restaurant. The food was very nice. We had steak which was cooked exactly to our liking. It was not too expensive, especially with the €20 credit.

We went into the bar then for a night cap. The bar is big and roomy with hugh ceilings. Only thing is on a cold night it seemed a little drafty. The fire was lighting so we sat beside that!

The room was quite warm during the night so it proved a little uncomfortable. The following morning we got to appreciate the view of the room. We had a 'Superior Balcony Room' which gave lovely views over the water.

The following morning we had a nice breakfast. Only thing I would fault was that we waited a few minutes to be seated and in the end we just sat at an available seat as there was no staff member to direct us. Also when they did they DID NOT ask for a room number. I'm not sure how I would feel about them not cheking room numbers as some poeple could be taking advantage?

We did not avail of the late checkout as we needed to get on the road home.

As I travelled with someone with hip problems we needed to use the wheelchair access to the restaurant and bar. I was not confident with this as it was infact a back corridor between the staff area and bar that led out onto the groundfloor 'lobby'. The worrying thing was that the floor had been washed and although there was a caution sign, it did not look very safe. It had a slight dip in it so for people with a disability it may not be the safest. The lift does not go straight into the ground floor 'lobby'.

Also on checkout the €20 was not deducted off my bill, I had to question it with the girl on the desk which I found rather irritating.

Overall the staff were nice. The quality of the hotel was just not what I expected. Not sure the superior quality was superior enough.

Dear sloping_fungus,

I would like to thank you for having taken the time to complete your trip advisor review regarding your recent visit to Ferrycarrig. I am delighted to read that you enjoyed the view and your dining experience in the restaurant.

However, I am disappointed to read that your bedroom did not meet your expectations and for this I sincerely apologise. We pride ourselves on providing customers’ with excellent facilities, services and renowned dining. I have addressed the issues highlighted in your review with the maintenance team regarding the shower. On reading your comment in relation to the socket in the bathroom- this is not an electrical socket but a phone line which falls within the safety guide line.

We very much appreciate all feedback which assists with reviewing and improving hotel services and look forward to having the opportunity of welcoming back to Ferrycarrig in the near future.

Kind Regards,

Jeanette O’Keeffe,
General Manager.
