Another visit to Sand Bay to listen to great Country and Sixties music,it was a great week end only spoilt by the fact that several of the waiters and waitresses had been sacked and the meals are now self service, but after the first night when we were only allowed one hour for everybody to queue and eat, things did get better.Food was reasonable and plentiful and the remaining waiters and waitresses did their best to be helpful despite being whinged and moaned at by some people who just seem to enjoy having something to complain about!!
We will be going back for the Autumn Jamboree because this is the best place to see excellent acts and entertainment in this area.Well done Keith and the rest of the team for putting on this event and for raising money for such good charities with your raffle. Thanks to the remaining Martyns staff who did their best to be helpful under stressful circumstances.

Sand bay has new owners and have made some changes.it is a very popular destination with the elderly But you now have to queue for your meals , not very popular with elderly as can be imagined. Food acceptable
Although some help is at hand with waiters. The chalets have mostly been refurbished and are warm and clean.Entertainment is not as good as previous. The changes have not gone down well with the older. patrons some even cut short their holiday.Rumours are that there were many varing complaints. The public area' s need lots of refurbishment.
Lets hope things will improve for the better in the future and that the new owners will follow the previous owners trend for good value for money

Room Tip: Try to upgrade to bigger chalet

Just arrived home after 5 days at Sand bay. I must say we had a lovely time, we were a party of four, two couples. The chalets were lovely and warm, but ours hadn't seen a hoover for a long time. We had a lovely clean bed, but the bathroom needed attention.
The food was good, the self service worked but only because there was only 160 people. Wouldn't like to be there with many more people. I agree the bingo was a disgrace £6 a line and £12 a house was normal. The older lady in reception came out ready for an argument every time we went to ask a simple question, she was always on the defensive. In fact quite a few of the staff could do with going to charm school. Natalie seemed quite sharp at times.
Taking into account how much we paid, it was still good value, and yes we would go again, if only to see if improvements have been made. The entertainment was good but it finished too early.
We have been before, so we know how good it used to be.

Room Tip: Rooms very much the same

My advice is, if you have been to Sand Bay before January 2014 (when it was owned by Martyn Leisure Resort, i.e. Hollybush Hotel group) and you are thinking of going again - DON'T. Like us you would probably end up being severely disappointed.
We first went to Sand Bay about 15 years ago for a Big Band mid week break. The accommodation (The Sheds as one of our party fondly referred to them), was adequate, clean and warm, and the food and entertainment was very good. So good that we returned for several New Year breaks and more recently for the New Year Party Breaks in either January or February.
Over the years it must be said that the variety of food has been reduced but it was always good quality. My gluten-free diet was always well catered for. The Staff have always been extremely good and I cannot criticise any of them.
Imagine the shock we had when we arrived for our New Year Break to find that Pontins had taken over 2 weeks previously, and according to some members of staff, had sacked 32 of their colleagues. There were massive queues to book in and we were told that tables were no longer allocated and that the restaurant was now self service. Consequently, there were massive queues at both food stations for all meals. Staff in the restaurant said that they could not assist but were only there to clear away.
May be it sounds as if I am moaning about something that many hotels and leisure resorts are using these days but remember, Sand Bay is advertised for adults only and most of the clientele are over 60 many being infirm. My wife helped a lady with a zimmer who was trying to get a cup of tea.
Staff morale was at an all time low. The whole place seemed in a state of chaos. There were other issues but I do not have time to mention them here. We had booked for 4 nights but left after 3.
We did write to Brittania Jinky Jersey T/A New Pontins and received a phone call from a nice lady who is the manager at Sand Bay. She assured us that had she been on duty when Pontins took over she would have tried her utmost to avoid some of the catastrophes that had occurred but the restaurant would remain self service. She also said that if we decide in the future to book again she would endeavour to provide a better service. Sorry - not going to happen!

Room Tip: Stay at home.

This was our third visit to Sandbay and the worst since it was taken over by pontins it had changed to self service which we did not now about which made it very diffecult for the elderly on our coach also the food which was served was very basic and in a lot of cases not very hot and it was manely the same everyday it also said in the bathroom if you put your towel in the shower when dirty they would be changed but we found out later that we had to take them to reception to be changed .The entertainment was very basic and finished early . A lot of staff had been finished and when we ask about any problem we had the excuse was we are doing the best we can with the staff we have got but surely this is not our problem .We also played bingo which would cost us £12.00 for one session we found out that Pontins were taking out 55% and only paying out 45% which i thought was over the top as vat is not even that much. The coach company will not being going again and potins as spoilt this venue for a lot of people donot deserve customers.

Room Tip: Rooms are basic and old fashioned in need of decorating and showers need updating.avoid

Having been to Sand Bay several times in recent years for a family week-end i was very surprised to read the harsh reviews prior to my recent visit. I have to agree with the majority and say this camp has gone downhill drastically.
Friday arrival started with a mad rush to reception to obtain chalet keys which were not released until 4pm !!!
We were then informed that the dining room would only be open for one hour for evening meal (6-7pm) & breakfast from 8-9am...If your late you don't eat. The soup was cold on 2 of 3 nights and when we complained to the waitress she disappeared ? Apart from the soup the rest of the food was quite edible, if you managed to get some before it ran out.
Entertainment, i use the term loosely, was a performance by the Blue Coats which was completely underwhelming - it seems they didn't learn anything from Scott Paige who was an excellent performer & arranger.
Couldn't get a drink from the bar during the Rugby & Football on Saturday as it was closed till 5pm !
Saturday's entertainment was Debbie Farrell (Vocalist) who proceeded to let 3 audience members take over the show.
On Sunday the bar actually opened at 11.45am then closed at 12.30 (why bother). Evening entertainment was again performed by George John (Blue Coat) who has the stage presence and personality of a plank, after every song he pulled a sheet of paper from his pocket to see what was next.
I think it safe to say we as a family will not be returning to Sand Bay as long as PONTINS are involved.

We really enjoyed our visit to Sand Bay last year but were very disappointed this year. The changes by Pontins include self service restaurant, low payout of bingo winnings, entertainment finishes early and along with the staff cuts the atmosphere is one of a sinking ship. The food choice is limited, for example the only starter is soup and the only desert is ice cream or gateau. The food is basic and not always hot. We had lunch there with no drinks at all, not even water. Pontins extracted 55% from the bingo takings therefore the 45% paid out was substantially less than expected. The evening entertainment ceased about 11pm. We are not going again, we were on one of 5 coaches and our organiser is looking elsewhere for the future.
