“I am a beer lover”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2014

So places like this are nerd paradise for me... although I was a bit disappointed they didn't have any of their own beer. Puerto Rico is not really a beer lovers paradise, but this little bastion of beer gave several opportunities to try new tastes. The place reminded me a bit of a coffee shop and downtown Rincon is not huge. It was a beautiful night, so the bartender gave us some plastic cups and we strolled around the park and city enjoying our beers.

“Great Beer, Poor Tapas”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2014

SUMMATION: Great to finally have a Craft Beer Brewery in Western Puerto Rico, if they succeed. Draft Craft Beer excellent, but tapas and ambiance were poor.

NAME: Rincon Beer Company

TITLE: “Great Beer, Poor Tapas” [Tripadvisor, review #60, 6 May 2014]

E-MAIL: drink@rinconbeerco.com

TELEPHONE: (787) 407-0121

WEB PAGE: http://rinconbeerco.com

HOURS OF OPERATION: 4-10 pm (Tuesday-Wednesday), 4 pm-midnight (Thursday and Sunday), 4 pm-1 am (Friday-Saturday)

OWNERS: Sage and Naomi Hobbs [1]

CHEF: Amanda Simpson [2]

LOCALITY: 15 Calle Muñoz Rivera, Rincón, Puerto Rico 00677-2123

DIFFICULTY LOCATING: easy

DIRECTIONS: It is on the Downtown Plaza in Rincon, across the street from the gazebo, and next to Brothers’ Pizza.

AMBIANCE: Bright, bare bones place, not a Pub. They had various, disjunct clientele.

AIR-CONDITIONED: yes

OUTSIDE SEATING: 2 tables on the sidewalk

GREETING: none

DÉCOR: Very disappointing. It is just a hole-in-the-wall café with metal furniture. No brewery decorations.

BAR: full service

BEER: Eleven craft beers on tap, including those from San Juan. Many more bottled Crafts. Soon to brew their own including Bamboo Blonde Ale, Overhead IPA, and Whitewash Wit.

GLASSES: Real, glass, beer glasses. No plastic or paper.

CUISINE: Beer and Gringorican Fusion Tapas [3]

MENU ITEMS: Their Tapas did not look very interesting.

WAITRESS: We had no table service. We had to order from the bar.

APPETIZERS: The Tapas we ordered were not very good.

SERVING TIME: okay

SECURITY: They received a citation for being open too late. They were closed and only cleaning the place!

PROBLEMS: They were originally going to have their own beers by their Grand Opening 1 March 2014. Next, they planned to have them by the spring, which is almost gone.

NOISE LEVEL: Not too bad, for a bar.

COMPARISONS: The Thai restaurant [One-Ten Thai] just out of Ramey Base, Gate 5, has had 2-3 San Juan Craft Beers on tap for many years [4]. My favorite service station has as many Crafts in bottles, the fancy pizza shop across PR-2 from the Mayaguez Mall [Faccios Pizza] has almost as many, and even SAMs has a few. However, beer on tap [5], except Medalla, is still unusual in Western Puerto Rico.

RECOMMENDATIONS: You are trying to be too fancy. Beer drinkers are not fancy people.

TRIPADVISOR: rated Excellent, 5 out of 5, 4 reviews

HISTORY: The Rincon Beer Company was visualized in late 2012. A location was found and bought in June 2013. It was renovated, permitted, and opened 2 January 2014. Their Grand Opening Party was 1 March with beer only. They recently added Tapas. They promise to start brewing their own Craft Beers soon.

FOOTNOTES:
[1] They moved from Fayetteville, Arkansas, to Rincón, Puerto Rico in 2011. Their only experience was home brewing beer for 10 years.
[2] cook, food pornographer and stylist, cookbook author [Food Porn Daily: The Cookbook, 2010; Taste This: Recipes from Amanda’s Kitchen, 2013], and owner of FoodPornDaily.com and WhatWereEating.com
[3] The true meaning of the term “Tapas” seems to have been lost. Restaurants serve any number of things and call them “Tapas.” There is a restaurant in La Parguera that has “Tapas” in its name, but does not have any tapas [Moons Bar and Tapas].
[4] Their food is very good, but limited and pretty redundant (see my review).
[5] “Draft” beer once was clearly from a keg of beer. Now beer in cans and bottles are called by the oxymoron “Draft.” Sadly, we must use “on tap” now.

Thanks for the feedback! As you know, we only opened a few months ago, and we're still working to provide the best experience for our customers.

We're glad you enjoyed our beer selection! We work hard to offer a wide variety of both draft and bottled beers, especially small-batch microbrews from around Puerto Rico.

Regarding brewing in-house, in typical island fashion, it took a little longer than we anticipated to build our brewing equipment. We had our beer for sale on several occasions, but were not able to make the larger batches required to have it available on a regular basis. However, we're excited to announce that we started brewing our own beer in-house last week! Our first batches will be available for sale once they have fermented, in about 6 weeks. We hope you'll come by to try some!

Our food menu has changed since we opened. Our original concept was a tapas menu, but we quickly saw that our clientele was looking for more fried bar-style food, so we switched it up. I submitted the changes to our Tripadvisor account some time ago, but for whatever reason they were never posted. I'll try again. Our kitchen is now closed for the summer, but we plan to re-open in the fall with asopao, tostones, pulled pork sliders, and other bar snacks.

Our modern/industrial decor may not be for everyone. Our walls have gallery art displaying work of local artists; these displays rotate regularly. We opted to go for original art instead of brewing posters or other manufactured decorations. Our brewing equipment is in plain view from the bar, and we're happy to give customers a tour explaining the basic brewing procedures.

I hope you'll return to check us out again! We're constantly striving to create a relaxing, chill space to unwind, play board games, or just hang with friends. We'd love to sit and have a beer with you.

“Rincon Now Has Everything”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

Excellent draft selection, including San Juan brews. I live in Philadelphia, and do not recall ever having Bell's Hopslam on tap. In Rincon, no problemo.
