“This is not just a meal it is an event!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013

First of all the view from the balcony seating is spectacular. The spirit of the staff is authentic and charming. The meal was wonderful. We had a party of 4 and all ate different combinations of breakfast cuisine and all were delighted...and full! This is my first ever restaurant review and I was inspired to do so by the experience.

Thank Sveums

“My First Visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 3, 2013

Name: English Rose [English] or La Rosa Inglesa [Spanish]

E-mail: See Reservations below.

Telephones: (787) 823-4032; cell 787-207-4615

Web Page: http://www.rinconpuertoricobedandbreakfast.com/ Very well done.

Owners: Jethro and Ruth Wickenden [Ruth is on Facebook]

Chef: Jethro Wickenden

Reservations: reservations@larosainglesa.com (787) 207-4615

Locality and Mailing Address:

Carr. Interior 413, km 2.0
Bo. Ensenada
P.O. Box 1508
Rincón, PR 00667

Locating: The directions and map on their web page are good.
The area has a maze of confusing roads. There are 2 long, one-way roads, with 2-way traffic, up to the restaurant. These include many blind curves and blind hilltops. Some near-road precipices are also entertaining as are some steep sections. I would call these roads “bad” and “worse.” Please be careful. At least the roads are paved.

Occasion: I have had people telling us for 10 or more years that we had to go to this restaurant.

Parking: Inadequate. Awful. We parked in front of the door, but some AH jammed in beside us. I had to crawl across from the passenger side and twist our car out of the wrongly parked cars. At least those waiting outside to be seated gave me a rousing round of applause!

Greetings: adequate

Specials: NA. They occasionally change the menu and some of the fruits and juices are seasonal.

View: The 3 tables out on the balcony have an excellent view. The 5 inside have to look around corners and stare through those people on the balcony. However, the view down the hill into the ocean is marvelous.

Atmosphere: Casual although some guests were well dressed. The waitresses and staff were wearing the same style tee-shirt advertising a breakfast. Not a very calm and relaxing place with swirls of hustle-and-bustle all around you. There are some of the things that are called “Local Art” on display. The Beach Glass Jewelry looks like it was tumbled and is not authentic.

Decor: Glaring modern. With 2 refrigerators in the dinning room, they cannot rank very high on style.

Layout: Their small number of tables and tiny kitchen surprised me. I do not know if they have settled on a low volume of business for their comfort, to maintain a certain exclusiveness, or both. This social laissez faire must give visiting entrepreneurs ulcers; however, Rincón has never been the place for capitalists.

Air-conditioned: Nope. Open air. Usually cool enough up in the hills with a breeze. Does not matter. The balcony is covered. Business and open days diminish in the summer anyway.

Beer: NA.

Wine: NA. I know; I know; the Pirate prefers Champagne with his breakfast, also [1]. Champagne is a very popular drink in England, even for breakfast. This could be an improvement.

Drinks: No alcohol. Fresh local juices, teas, coffee (see online menu). Lots of coffee refills. The chironja (orangelo) [2] juice and passion-fruit-spice tea were excellent.

Water: With ice without charge.

Menu: The menu was surprisingly simple and plain (see online). The Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon instead of Canadian Bacon was mislabeled “Benny Hill.” Eggs Benny Hill is actually regular Eggs Benedict. The smoked salmon variety is called “Eggs Royale” and 2 other names (look it up online).
Their tropical juices and fruits are wonderful, but hardly English. The menu also lacks the British standards of black pudding, baked beans, and fish (other than salmon). However imperfect their representation, they at least differ from the local breakfast (the local breakfasts can also be wonderful and cheap).
“Toms” are grilled tomato halves. “Bubble and squeak” is like hash brown potatoes, but made with several chopped up vegetables.

Waitress: Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable. Substituted half our English Muffins for home-made bread on request. Not hard on the eyes.

Bread: They make their own bread. It is a bit heavy and tough for my tastes. This is not served “free,” but only as part of the breakfast (as stated in menu) or as a side dish.

Appetizers: NA.

Salad: NA.

Entrée: The poached eggs were perfect. The Hollandaise Sauce was a bit bland. Needed more lemon juice, salt, and pepper. They make their own sausages and bread. I was just prepared to be more overwhelmed. The breakfasts were very good, but they were just breakfasts. I am not complaining about the quality, but I need something from a restaurant that I either cannot obtain, cannot make, or do not wish to make.

Silverware: Rather plain, light stainless. They provide a steak knife for cutting the bread and muffins.

Serving Time: Surprisingly quick considering that the pace was always packed.

Desert: NA.

Bathroom: Small, but adequate and clean. Good quality paper towels.

Cost Comparison: Once the only place serving breakfast in the Rincon area. Now others have jumped in, but I doubt there is any comparison. Considering the quality and quantity, their prices are quite reasonable and are listed on their web page.

Bill: Accurate, correct, promptly provided once we requested. Considering their volume of business, they should be rushing people out, but they do not.

Security: None noticed, but hardly seems necessary.

Summation: The food quality and quantity, service, and view are excellent. The dangerous road to the restaurant, poor parking space, not adequately serving the demand, serving things even I can make [3], not actually serving a true “Full English Breakfast,” and misnaming “Eggs Royale” as “Benny Hill,” lowers my rating to only “Very Good.”

[1] At least whenever he can capture a French ship.
[2] Chironja [Spanish] or orangelo [English] is a natural hybrid between grapefruit and orange that occurred in the trees used to shade the coffee in the mountains of Puerto Rico and was developed by UPRM. It is larger than an orange and sweeter, and easier to peel, than a grapefruit.
[3] May be not as well as this Chef.

“Unbelievably good food and view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

I can literally find no faults with this restaurant. It was recommended to us by a friend for breakfast and it was absolutely perfect. The view was great, the service was super friendly, the prices were great and the view was spectacular. I cannot say enough good things about this place! If you are visiting Rincon, you must eat at this place!

“a must”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

A trip to Ringing must include the Rose. Everything is made from scratch and the service is excellent. The view is incredible. The mountains overlooking the ocean is heddy mix. The only drawback is the driveway ---feels like a mile straight up and basically 1 car wide. I cant imagine meeting another car.
