Venissa - Wine Resort

Certificate of Excellence

We took 2 of the 6 guest rooms. Design and ergonomics was a highlight, with a nod to the original building and to Mazzorbo/Burano style. The staff were a delight and the freshness of the breakfast another highlight of the stay. The short walk to Burano was convenient and increased the eating and shopping options slightly. We tried several restaurants in Burano as well as the Venissa restaurant and found that a couple of restaurants at Burano were of a (surprisingly) high standard. The Venissa restaurant set the standard even higher, although it is a different style of dining altogether. One thing to note is that given the choice of rooms, the better ones face the water, because even though the gardens are gorgeous, the insects seemed attracted to those garden suites. Overall, I think that the uniqueness of the location and the boutique offerings are a great offering compared to the options in Venice itself.

An outstanding experience. We visited for lunch. The service was simply outstanding... The food was beyond anything we had anticipated. Incredible flavors, use of herbs & vegetables grown on the property & the presentation divine. A MUST VISIT when in Venice!

I have visited Venissa 3 times since it opened. Situated on Mazzorbo it is a charming inn (6 rooms), expensive restaurant and vineyard. The rooms are very contemporary, Ikea style furnished, beds not very comfortable, and bathrooms very small with basins far too low. The showers are tiny despite there being room for them to be bigger. But, I forgive all this as I love the ambience, the simple island, the excellent breakfasts, and the very helpful staff. It's really lovely being away from the hubbub. However, it has become too expensive for what it is. I paid 195 euro for a room inc breakfast & taxes in May 2014, up from 115 euro in 2011 in peak season (up 70%). The hotel was not full even in May, and I visited several hotels in Dorsodouro where I could get good rooms for 145 euro inc breakfast. I think they should aim for higher occupancy by lowering the rates a bit.

Room Tip: Rooms all similar. I would choose those overlooking the canal.

The previous review I think is unfair. This is my second stay here and I can testify to the fact that this place is not a rip off, it is classy yet not expensive. It is not cheap either (it is not a B&B in the normal sense, it is elegant and chic. It is more like a very very good restaurant with six rooms, owned by a very reputable Italian wine maker based in Treviso, who have rescued a small vineyard adjacent to the hotel/restaurant. The vineyard specialises in a grape variety called Dorone which is endemic to Mazzorbo island in the Venetian lagoon and produces around 3000 bottles per year. I have tried the 2010 vintage and it was superb (costing around 180 euros; the 2011 vintage goes for 140 euros; both vintages in gorgeous bottles designed and produced by a well known Murano glass maker. The rooms are modern and quiet nice. The restaurant and some of the wines are expensive, which is normal for good wines, but the quality of both is very good. Some of their wines, like the Talento, is excellent yet reasonable at 38 euros a bottle. They obviously promote their other wines plus others from the Veneto region and the rest of Italy. I like this place. The boat into Venice proper leaves every 30 minutes, the island of Mazzorbo is beautiful and quiet, and the hotel is a gem. Breakfast is included and comes with fresh blood orange and lots of small bites.

Room Tip: Go for a room on the front as you have a view of the canal. They are not noisy at all.

Very small ( 6 rooms) boutique hotel in a quiet island 35 minutes to Venice. Rooms are large and very clean with great view. Central AC. Great restaurant on premises, but wide variety of dining on nearby Burano island. Friendly, very helpful English speaking personnel. Breakfast is included in the price. Water bus stops next to the hotel. Will stop there again on my next trip to Venice.

This is a great hotel away from the chaos of the centre of venice during summer. Good rooms, great breakfast with super fresh ingredients and a fresh juicing machine. Best fine dining meal experienced yet for dinner. Wonderful place, highly recommended..

This was a wonderful way to get away from the crowds of Venice for a few days. We stayed in one of the first-floor (second-floor to North Americans) rooms overlooking the water. Our room was outfitted with a stylish minimalism -- the furniture was handsome, whitewashed wood, and the bedsheets, curtains, even the towels, were a rich, heavyweight linen. The hotel only has six rooms, and one of the pleasures here is enjoying the public spaces around the hotel in some privacy, since most tourists don't make their way to Mazzorbo. A walk through the vineyard and farm (watch for mosquitos during the summer, though!), an hour or two spent reading on the covered terrace behind the hotel, a five-minute stroll over to Burano. My only reason for withholding a star has to do with the breakfast, which is included as part of your stay, but which is itemized at 20 euros pp.; the service was always attentive and gracious, but the fruit was generally unripe -- something of a scandal for a hotel whose restaurant is Michelin-starred! Perhaps the bad weather this year has thrown the usual seasonal offerings off, but in this case, I think that something else, not hard pears and pale strawberries, ought to be offered instead.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Venissa Wine Resort, located on the island of Mazzorbo in the Venetian Lagoon a mere 40 minutes by ferry from Venice, offers an abundance of options for travelers looking for a unique and entirely off-the-beaten-track experience. The estate's charming 6-room guesthouse is the epitome of laid-back, minimalist elegance. Located on the bottom floor of the guesthouse is a casual osteria serving delicious local fare, while across the grounds is Venissa's Michelin-starred fine-dining restaurant, which has become a sought-after destination for local and international foodies thanks to the chefs' creative, innovative take on the hyper-local ingredients used in their dishes, many of which come from the estate's beautiful heirloom garden. There is also a fascinating walled vineyard on the property: in fact, Venissa is best known for the white wine it produces from the Dorona varietal, native to the Venetian Lagoon but long forgotten until Gianluca Bisol, Venissa's owner, discovered and planted an abandoned vine on Mazzorbo nearly fifteen years ago. In addition to tours of the vineyard and guided wine tastings, visitors to Venissa have the rare opportunity to completely immerse themselves into Venetian Lagoon culture by way of boating excursions, rowing lessons with the Rowing Club of Burano, photography exhibitions, and private tours of largely undiscovered sites on the most ancient islands of the Venetian Lagoon. ... more   less
