Owner description: The Elephant Conservation Center marks a new era for conservation of the Asian elephant within the Lao PDR and offers a unique experience to visitors wishing to contribute towards the preservation of an endangered species. The first of its kind in Laos, the Center is not another elephant camp but an innovative approach that combines conservation of an endangered species with eco-tourism. Minimum stay is overnight, however we recommend our 2 nights package to experience all the activities and truly enjoy this tranquil part of the world. Volunteer experiences, 6 nights/7 days are also available. Now we have our own minivan departing Luang Prabang daily at 8am and it takes you back the following day or days arriving Luang Prabang 4.30pm. It is only a 2 hour journey from Luang Prabang, Laos' UNESCO World Heritage listed town.

My fiance and I were traveling in SEA for 3 months and had been on the lookout for an elephant activity. Unfortunately most facilities that advertise time with the elephants are sad, inundated with tourists and borderline abusive. We were thrilled when we found the ECC but hesitant as the cost was much higher then any other activity we did on our trip. But once we began our adventure to the ECC it all became worth it. The journey itself is an adventure, the scenery, the staff, the accommodations, the food, the elephants are AMAZING. The money spent goes to something so worthwhile. The people here really care about saving these gentle giants. We left feeling so happy and jealous of those yet to experience this place. Cannot wait to go back!!!

I lived in Laos for a year, and visiting the Elephant Conservation Center was one of the most memorable trips I took. The setting is awesome! The small bamboo huts are quaint, and overlook a beautiful lake. Just sitting looking out across the water with the sun setting was sooo relaxing. The food was some of the best I'd experienced in Laos. The staff were wonderfully friendly. But getting up close and personal to the stars of the show, the elephants, was just the best. I learned all about these might creatures and also, sadly about the exploitation of them. I saw two baby elephants and had the privilege of viewing one of them suckling from it's mother. That was one of the top experiences of my life! I could have stayed way longer than the few nights I was there, very happily. I would definitely recommend this experience of a lifetime!

We spent two nights and three days here in March 2013. We had a wonderful time. The facilities were basic but clean and well maintained- the shared showers were hot (you just had to know how to work the gas!) and the views were stunning. We came for the elephants, obviously, but loved the scenery, the food, the sunset swim and the people. Our guides were great- one even gave us a talk in English about the history of Laos.

This is the real deal: a vet from France is based onsite and she explained to us how they care for the animals and the work that they do to protect the elephants all over Laos. We got to spend heaps of time just chilling with the elephants, feeding and bathing them and getting to know their distinct personalities.

The bus ride from Luang Prabang was long-ish but trouble free (and followed by a trip in a small boat so leave your big suitcase at home!) and we are really glad that we spent the extra day or two to come here rather than go to one of the elephant parks closer to LP. This was THE highlight of our 3 months in south east Asia, and this is the first Trip Advisor review I have ever written. That is how amazing this place is. You have to go.

I stayed at the centre for one week in August 2013, and it was by far the highlight of my 3 months in SE Asia!
The location is absolutely stunning, and so peaceful, great to get away from everything for a while!
The staff are also wonderful, my guide in particular, Mr Sak was always so helpful and friendly, he spoke wonderful English and can teach you anything about Lao culture. He really goes the extra mile for everybody and it makes for a great atmosphere.
To the main part, the elephants! They are looked after so well, you get to see them every day but plenty of time is also made for the elephants to do their own thing, don't come here wanting to see tricks etc, this is a conservation centre where the animals are respected and treated properly!
I could talk about this place forever, it holds a special place in my heart, but all in all, just the most incredible place to visit, with wonderful work going on. An absolute must if you are an animal lover!
Thanks again to everyone at ECC,
much love,
Laura xxx

My partner and I took a trip from Luang Prabang to ECC, and it was well worth it! It really was an experience of a lifetime, and if you are thinking of spending some time with the elephants I highly recommend making the trip. The location is breathtaking, set on a beautiful lake we experienced magnificent sunsets. The food was fantastic, and the guides and staff made the trip both informative and enjoyable. The accommodation consisted of lovely huts overlooking the lake. It was evident that the elephants well-being is the priority here - they are so well cared for and loved, and you get to experience them in their home. Seeing the baby elephants at the breeding program was a special highlight, as was getting up close to the elephants as they bathed and played in the lake each afternoon! ECC is doing a wonderful job, and visiting will enable you to assist with the great work they do, while also creating memories of a lifetime!
