A haven of peace at the end of the lane.
The garden in May/June, planted with roses, honeysuckle and clematis.
The view in summer (towards the Mirabat, Col de la Core, lower slopes of Mt Valier).
The dining room is beautifully light,
keeps its coolness in summer
yet is cosy with the log burning fire in winter.
The upstairs lounge benefits from the same lovely light.
The charming chalet-style bedroom
and the larger second bedroom.
The kitchen is well equipped
and pretty at the same time.
The shaded patio is ideal for enjoying your barbecue.
Looking towards our neighbours' barn.
Summer flower meadows above the Col de la Core.
and the view towards Miramont from the Col de Caoutchedegue.
The amazing colours of L'Etang du Bethmale.
Mont Valier dominates the Couserans- and there is superb walking everywhere
such as here, above the upper reaches of the Vallée du Garbet,
the GR transfrontaliere towards Spain,
and towards the summit of Mt Valier itself.
There are gentler strolls alongside incredibly clear rivers (this is in the Ustou Valley)
through woodland to beautiful waterfalls ( this is the Cascade d'Ars)
to hidden cirques tucked close beneath the Spanish border (le Cirque d'Anglade)
through pastures dotted with barns,
and wherever you find yourself, there are plenty of places for a picnic!
Ariege is well-known for its love of cycling-the Tour de France passes close by most years,
and we are close to some of its most redoubtable Cols -this is the challenging Mur de Peguere,
and the winding climb up to the Col d'Agnes. with the upper Garbet Valley in the distance.
There is riding (and hacking) at Coumariaou nearby-all levels are welcome
and even the indoor school has a wonderful view! The owner, Lorenna, trained with le Cadre Noir.
Kayaking in the Salat above Seix.(canoe and rafting also available)
The lovely Vallee du Garbet between Oust and Ercé
A glimpse of autumn colours,
mists in our beautiful valley,
and in our local village of Seix,
-a picturesque place well-loved by artists.
The view in winter,
and the family orientated ski resort of Guzet (the prettiest in the Pyrenees) 25k away.
Our local town of St Girons is 20k away
and is renowned for it's Saturday market.
Beautiful Gallo Roman St Lizier is well worth exploring.
and wherever you go, whatever you do .....
We hope you come home to a wonderful sunset.

“Lovely rustic mountain cottage”
Reviewed September 8, 2016 for a stay in August 2016

My wife and I visited with 4 children ranging from 2-9. It has 2 proper bedrooms and 2 living spaces- the bigger and more pleasant being upstairs with the great views. This is an ideal rental for anyone looking for a holiday in the mountains in a very quiet location (in a tiny Hamlet in a no through road); walking, picnicking, kayaking, caves, mountain biking.

Some Pros and Cons;
Pros
1. Easy to get to from Toulouse.
2. Very welcoming owner with lots of info and set up the gite for our family.
3. If outdoors is your thing, there's more than you could even do. We found 4 ideal walks from the Tourist office for small kids and they were perfect- up rivers with nice places to picnic.
4. Kayaking- too much fun! Loved that.
5. Neighbours who were around were understanding of our children's screaching!
6. Very quiet- apart from us.
7. Superb views- see pics.
8. Safe- kids could run all over the road outside with no worries- it doesn't go anywhere!
9. There is a walk right from the house.- beware the ant colony!
10. House had all the functions and bits and pieces you need.
11. Gite feels like a mountain gite should do.

Cons (not really fair in this case but I have to put something!)
1. 10 hairpin bends to get to it or get to anywhere. Personally would be nervous in the snowy periods. But in the Summer, was part of the fun.
2. For us the nice big relaxing room with superb views upstairs couldn't be used as our baby was next door. Might be nice to have a TV in that room rather than downstairs?
3. This gite is more rustic than luxury (which was perfect for us).
4. If you want culture or gorgeous towns right next door, then this is not the ideal area (we were not wanting to travel more than 30 mins in any direction- if you can go to Foix or Mirepoix that's worth it or visit the Cathar castles such as Montsegur or others further afield (spelling?)- we've visited them in the past and I like castles. Takes AGES to get around the pyrannees- particularly East West. The towns and villages are typical, rural, charming but nothing to do or see other than rivers and mountains. Nearest villages of Oust and Sieux are pleasant- the latter has a river running through it and is pretty enough).
5. It's not a gite to stay in all day I would say, more of a base to explore the area. Having said that, we had lots of fun at and around the house. We saw this as an 'activity week' followed by another week somewhere else for chilling out. We went out every day and explored.

Summary: great gite in a dramatic, beuatiful location. Ideal for outdoor people to explore some spectacular valleys.

“Wonderful mountain hideaway ”
Reviewed July 23, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We just finished 3 weeks at Le Pichet. Our host, Eleri Munday, was fabulous. The gite is a little stone cottage high on a mountainside, with a garden with mountaintop views -- perfect for a late afternoon pastis or BBQ. The road up to Le Pichet is a little daunting at first, but one gets used to it. The kitchen is tiny but serviceable. While it is possible to sleep more, the cottage is most comfortable for 2-4 people. We hope to come back next year, if for nothing else, to visit with Eleri and her son Will again.

“Perfect hideaway in the French pyrenees”
Reviewed July 2, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

We stayed at Eleri's beautiful house for two weeks and didn't want to leave. Superb walking in the surrounding hills, wonderful views, fantastic food in the local villages. Eleri's charming house is roomy and well equipped - ideal for one or two couples. In the good weather the garden was perfect for long days with a book. Eleri was the perfect host, made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended, though please don't book next June as we might want to go back. Liz and Tom, from Australia.

Thank you very much for your kind comments, also for your lovely words in our "livre d'or". It was such a pleasure to have you - our first guests from Australia- as our "neighbours", always smiling and so hugely appreciative of everything in the area. We were especially delighted that you enjoyed the garden and our favourite restaurant in Oust so much, and the lovely walk down our lane and the track to get there.(and back!)
We also think that le Pichet is probably at it's best when accommodating one or two couples, but larger groups and families also seem to like it! (see lovely rustic mountain cottage review).
Your enthusiasm for the area has been catching, we already have bookings from Australia for next year. But we were really sad to see you go, and hope very much that you will indeed come back one day.

“Pretty gite in lovely hamlet”
Reviewed June 20, 2016 for a stay in June 2016

Spent a lovely week in this pretty gite which had everything we needed for our stay. A great base for exploring this area of the Pyrenees, not far from Seix which has all facilities. The nearer village of Oust is a little quiet but still has a boulangerie and a couple of bars and restaurants. Lovely hosts were extremely welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed.

We are so pleased that everything was to your liking and that you enjoyed your stay. Le Pichet is indeed a great location for exploring both on foot (and in retrospect, your week was one of the best for wild flowers this year) and further afield. Seix and Oust are indeed very different- Seix is more vibrant particularly during the summer fetes and transhumance - but this makes us really appreciate the greater calm of Oust! We love them both, partly because of the differences between them, and they are both so close that going further on to Seix makes little or no difference. Between them they provide everything necessary for a holiday, so there is no need to go down into St Girons unless you want to- although this of course has its charm as well!

“"We will be back !"”
Reviewed September 1, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

This is the second time I have submitted a review, and so memories of our time at Le Pichet are slowly fading as September is here.
We all had a fantastic stay, the accommodation ticked all the boxes for our family; our hosts were so welcoming and informative and generous with their time. The walks were an experience especially a chance meeting with a wild boar on one of the trails!
The whole area is unspoilt and we loved exploring it realising that we had too little time to do it justice.
A big thank you to Eleri and Rodney for all their time and help.

I am sorry it has taken so long for your review to be published, and thank you for your patience and perseverance in writing a second one some time after your stay after the first one got lost. It may be some months later, but we remember very well your enthusiasm for every aspect of this lovely area. In the 20 years we have owned this place we have never yet seen a boar, (neither, to our knowledge have any previous clients), as they are normally nocturnal and keep well away from humans -so this is a "first" for Le Pichet! It is always a such a source of pleasure when people enjoy our home; we most certainly hope you will be true to your title of your review!

“Lovely Hosts”
Reviewed August 27, 2015 for a stay in August 2015

The cottage is beautiful and functional, the surroundings incredible, but it was the hostess who made the stay exceptional. Thank you so much Eleri for going the extra mile in ensuring our short stay at Le Pichet was a memorable one.
If we are ever to return to the Pyrenees, Le Pichet will certainly be our first port of call.

Thank you - I am so glad you felt so at home in "le Pichet" and appreciated our wonderful surroundings so much; it is a pity you couldn't stay longer, but I'm glad that you were able at least get a feel for the area. It was a great pleasure to meet you and I do hope we will be able to welcome you back in the future. As for "going the extra mile", it is very kind of you to say so, but I don't feel that I did anything out of the ordinary - it is always such a delight to share this place with people who so clearly like it too.

“A pleasant place”
Reviewed June 11, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

Our stay a Le Pichet was preceded by many emails and phone conversations with the lovely host Eleri. As we stayed over Christmas and wanted to ski with our three young kids, Eleri made everything as easy as it could possibly be. She organised a real Christmas tree and helped with contacting the local, small ski resort (40 mins drive away) which really made our stay much more simple and festive. She left gifts for the kids which as such a lovely gesture and indicative of her brilliant hosting skills. The property, which is characterful, was comfortable and warm (once we got the fire going) and housed us adequately. The only down side we found was the access road to the property. Luckily we had no snow whilst we were there as driving to Le Pichet from the main road is very steep with lots of sharp bends which take some negotiating and not for the faint hearted driver! The local shops are great and offer most things you would need to ensure full bellies after a day on the slopes. All in all a good skiing holiday destination.

We are so pleased that you enjoyed your Christmas here. It is always a delight to prepare the house beforehand; it is indeed a characterful home which we feel lends itself to Christmas decoration and we particularly like to think of children enjoying their time here around a Christmas tree. For ski-ing, Guzet is a wonderful resort particularly for families with young children, (although it also has some challenging black runs and off-piste)and it was a pleasure to help as much as possible with arranging your ESF lessons which hopefully saved you some time.

We are pleased too that you did not experience any problems with the bends in the road. Snow does not usually fall at Miramont itself over the Christmas period (although this cannot of course be guaranteed, especially with the vagaries of today's climate); which is why we advise people to follow normal mountain safety procedure and be equipped with chains both for coming here and for going to Guzet. During periods of snow cover the snow plough does pass at least once every day, and we are always concerned to provide people with local weather and road information before and during their stay if conditions look as if they may be at all difficult.
Owners of local commerces have made quite a number of improvements over the last year, so I have passed on your comments on this aspect of your stay. They are also much appreciated- thank you.
