We've been in many beautiful places around the world but there are very few that you will always remember for their unique appeal, for the breathtaking beauty of the nature and for the hospitality of the hotel staff. If we are to rank how our feelings, this will be a 5 star hotel.
Yes, the hotel is pretty basic in terms of amenities, no TV, no fancy stereo or other modern facilities. But somehow you will feel that these would not fit in the same picture with the surroundings here. We had our "entertainment" just by sitting on the balcony, admiring the majestic mountains, listening to the mountain stream that flows right by the hotel, watching the people doing the hay harvesting or the kids running on their way to the village. A true meaning of the word "Idyllic".
The hosts were fantastic, although they spoke very little English, they provided the best service ever. The restaurant at the hotel is famous in the area for their Cordon Bleu. Even though this was a small village, there were many local people having dinner here, which for us was another assurance that the food is great. And for the first time in the history of restaurants actually they tried to convice us to order less, because we are going to feel too full!
The breakfast was simply exquisite, three types of bread, home made, still warm from the oven, local cheese, ham, eggs, jams, everything presented in an impecable way, we could not speak a word except Wow!!
Last but not least, everything comes with a price, and this is about getting here. From Altdorf to Isenthal there are only 11 km but if you are not used with the impossibly narrow mountain roads this could be a nightmare. All the way back and forth we were praying to not have another car coming from the oposite direction, we barely had room for ouserlves, we did not feel comfortable at all with pulling asside or backing the vehicle until you make room for the other vehicle. If you are not up for this, you can take the bus that runs every 20 minutes.
Even with all this driving challenge, we will be happy to return to Isenthal and in particular to Urirotstock hotel.

Room Tip: And if you had too much food, you can take the hiking trail BarenWeg (Bear Trail) which goes just a...

We spend one night in this simple hotel in the stunning and secluded village of Isenthal. The owners of the hotel were friendly and accommodating and our room, though quite basic and in need of an update, was clean, comfortable and with amazing views of the mountains and the roaring mountain stream right next to it. Besides the location, the best thing about the hotel is the simple breakfast: freshly baked breads, selection of local cheeses and homemade jams- yum!

Most amazing location in the Swiss alps - the drive from up from the lake was not for the faint hearted but its worth it once you arrive at the village which was breathtaking. There are little amenities so we ate at the hotel - very basic food ( fondue or meat with chips), but okay for one night. The rooms were a good size (two bedrooms accessed of a corridor plus bathroom) which was great with kids. We then wandered up the one road and admired the views.

Lovley quiet spot for our first nights stop in a beautiful village. Plenty of opportunity for walking and hiking. The basic room was clean, bed comfortable and very quiet even though there were quite a few other guests. Beautiful view across the river to the mountains from the room. The food was very good, though I found the local cheese Rosti rather rich.

We stayed here in a family room with our three children (one was in a babycot). The hotel room itself is just fine--it's got thin walls but is clean and has enough room, etc. The people who own it and run it are incredible kind and were great to us--helped us with our bags, accommodate our kids food requests, etc. The breakfast is tremendous--soft boiled eggs, all sorts of breads and jams, some yummy cheeses and meat, fruit, cereals, and yogurt. It definitely had something for everyone. Isenthal is a terrific little town-there is a gondola and cable car that go up the mountain and it is a crazy one lane road up into the mountains from lake lucerne. We are sooo glad that we went there! I'd highly recommend the town!
