“Serenity among culture and nature”
Reviewed December 26, 2008

La Casa Sol Otavalo exceeded our expectations. You never are sure how a hotel will be until you arrive. We were pleasantly surprised at what a gorgeous, serene, peaceful place this hotel is. It is everything others said it was and more. The pictures on their website don't do it justice. It is the highest structure on the hill and is among gorgeous trees with amazing views. The Peguche Falls are a 5 minute walk and water from it go through the waterfalls that meander through the hotel. It is a very unusual structure and every room was different. My husband, 7 year old son and I had a HUGE room (I would say at least 400 square feet) with amazingly comfortable beds and down comforters. For just $72 + tax we had this amazing, spotless room with hot water, fabulous fresh breakfast and gourmet dinner . My son loved how the kitchen was open so that he could watch the amazing chefs prepare meals. He actually loved the food and he hates everything.
Everyone at the hotel was so kind and another pleasant surprise is that the water from the tap is purified so you did not have to buy bottled water and have those horrible plastic bottles go in the trash (there did not appear to be recycling in Otavalo like in Quito and the Galapagos). Our family can attest to the fact that their water was safe because it has been a week and we did not get sick.
The hotel found us a wonderful driver, Guillermo, who picked our family up at the airport and drove us to the hotel playing music from Otavalan musicians. We even saw a double rainbow on the way. He was a kind, safe driver and had a squeaky clean taxi with functioning seatbelts.
We spent 2 nights at La Casa Sol in Peguche arriving on a Sunday. The second night there we were the only guests. I highly recommend coming to Otavalo after the market. We walked around the entire area for 2 days and saw almost no tourists (our favorite way to travel). What an amazing experience to walk over the hills and see how all the locals live. The views were breathtaking and everyone was so kind. We highly recommend hiking over to Puerto Lago from the hotel. A gorgeous walk that allowed us to meet so many wonderful indigenous people. Our family gave away 2 suitcases worth of things in the span of 2 days and we have never met such greatful people (and we do this every time we visit developing countries).
We can't say enough about this hotel and can not wait to return.
Something I would recommend to guests is to get clarity on the pricing. There is just a bit of disconnect between their sister hotel in Quito that seems to handle pricing. It all worked out for us once the Peguche hotel called Quito. You just have to be patient. They are truly kind and incredibly honest.

My family, though expats who've lived in Quito for 4 years, have experienced plenty of Andean hospitality, found LA CASA SOL, although overall good, to be of a mixed experience.

The entrance to the adobe style Casa is quite charming: a garden with trickling water, flowers, warm colors painted on the exterior are all inviting qualities. The lobby is small, who cares? The hotel staff was MOST kind and helpful. The cafe is large with a fire place that, when lit at night, provides a romantic ambiance. I enjoyed having a late breakfast on the terrace overlooking the valley. Parking is quite limited and the steep climb up with any car will be a challenge. Most guests take a taxi into Otavalo. It’s a very short walk to the Peguche Waterfall. The CASA SOL is well located.

The architecture is stunning and the rooms are extremely comfortable, quiet, along with the spotless bathrooms and French doors that opened to our garden patio--room--16, made our time there memorable. Our 2 kids, ages 5 and 11, had the room next door--room 17—and loved it.

The design of the building is layered with the rooms constructed in a scattered formation on different levels, this allows for privacy. Warm and cool colors tint the walls and the owners hung artwork through out the CASA. The views from the rooms toward Cotacachi are splendid. The rooms are warm and the bedding clean and cozy. Many rooms have a small fireplace. I did see some of the larger rooms boasting a TV/DVD and phone.

The biggest issue we had, well I had, was the food. We heard so many great things about the food from friends who had been there. Our experience was just the opposite. Having traveled all over the world and eating is various establishments I can honestly say the CASA SOL menu is horrendous. Most dinners are a pre-fix menu. We had leather-hardened chewing beef, a couple of boiled potatoes and a few tomatoes and pieces of lettuce were scattered on the plate. The desert was, well, I am sure what that was? That being said my son ordered another plate and they happily fed him 2 servings. There is not a lunch menu as such—most people are out all day anyway—I asked for a bowl of potatoes and they literally brought me a small bowl of boiled potatoes for lunch. They went down nicely with my cold beer. Breakfast is fine. It’s a typical continental fare with some eggs on offer and fresh fruit and juices. The food is not cheap for Ecuadorian prices, especially if you step outside the fixed-menu, which our children did a number of times.

The coffee, on the other, is out of this world!!!!

The staffs at CASA SOL are wonderful and helpful. They welcomed our family and friends with open arms. Some English is spoken. They did not for a second mind our kids and the other kids there, running about, in a nice way, through out the CASA. They tried hard to please us and wanted us to have a good time but I will say again, the food needs a serious re-working. The food is simply, limited, bland and awful.

WiFi is available in the rooms for a fee or they have a small business office with Internet.

We stayed in this b&b for 3 nights and we were the only people in this hotel. The place is beautiful and immaculately clean, it is located on a high hill overlooking the village of Peguche. The rooms are good size, the bed is very comfortable, but there was no dresser in the room so we could not unpack! The fireplace did work, but did not provider that much heat! The hotel is very conveniently located to the Otovalo market $2 cab or 30 cents bus ride. As for the food it was very good for dinner (4 course). The first time they served breakfast it was great, with yogurt and granola, the other mornings they skipped on yougurt and just gave us a bowl of fruit and rolls.
All in all it was a pleasant, relaxing place and having visited one hacienda (Cusin) I would definately recommend this B&b over hacienda Cusin as it is cheaper and more convinently located.

My husband and I had an amazing stay here. The indiginous staff was extremely friendly and accomodating. Even though they spoke very little English, we understood each other. The food was great....four courses for dinner, which included chicken. Breakfast was pastries and freshly made granola and yogurt. The room was very comfortable and clean. The design of the hotel is wonderful. Each room feels like it is the only room in the hotel. Internet is available at a small cost (though they did not charge us for one session, it was only $1.00) Very peaceful, I could have stayed here a whole week.

The property sat on top of a mountain overlooking Otavalo; the views were breathtaking. The building was gorgeously constructed and very clean. The design of the building reminded me of a rugged Candy Land! The staff was very accommodating and prepared an amazing dinner and breakfast. I cannot think of one single criticism about my stay. I would definitely stay there again!

Outstanding experience from start to finish. For about 50 USD per night you are fed breakfast and supper and the food is absolutely so delicious!! Take the opportunity to go for a stroll up the mountain to the Lake if you like walking...it is quite beautiful. We found that La Casa Sol was exceptionally peaceful and relaxing. There was a fireplace in our room but for some reason they did not want to light it. It was cold so they gave us a heater...but obviously we would have preferred the fire. However, there is a fireplace in the common area that is very very nice. The common spaces are lovely and everyone was laid back that was working there and staying there...the music is really calming. They also have a beautiful book collection you can look at. Make sure you clarify the rate you are paying, including the service fee etc before you go.
Thanks to all for making this stay so lovely.

I loved La Casa Sol here in Peguche! We stayed a couple of nights and visited Otavalo market, Peguche waterfall & Cuicocha Lake. This B&B is the sister place to the one in Quito and this one outshines the other by far! I loved the decor, with various local art and the colors of the villa were so comforting. It was a nice surprise that our stay included both breakfast AND dinner. I highly recommend it, tho it is easier if you spoke Spanish to ask for anything!
