“Fabulous Dining Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

We found this jewel featured in an insert with the LCBO food & drink magazine published in September and decided to give it a try for a birthday dinner - could not have been better.
Very impressed with the simplicity of the decor, which was soft and modern, the service, look and taste of every course was wonderful. We were treated to a lamb tortellini appetizer to start, the salad with beet and walnuts was wonderful, mussel broth included mushrooms, olives and tomatoes (I think), my lamb was perfectly done, the pistachio crushed chicken was delicious, as was the duck breast with straw (dried onions), I know all this as we three at the table were tasting each others food. The portions were just right but we had no room for dessert - do give this restaurant which has been there since 2005 a try - you will not be disappointed.

“Great ingredients shown off to perfection”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013

We were crossing Southwest Ontario on a trip from Michigan to Niagara Falls and needed a place to spend the night. We selected Woodstock based on the glowing reviews of Six Thirty Nine and were rewarded with a truly wonderful meal.

The restaurant emphasizes its reliance on fresh, locally produced ingredients (suppliers are listed on the menu), and in mid-summer in the heart of one of Ontario's prime agricultural regions, there was much to savor. Spinach soup was full of rich, deep flavor, and the inclusion of radishes and arugula provided the perfect complement. Elaine's spring fed trout was moist and delectable, and Jeff's roasted lamb was as flavorful and tender as any lamb he could remember, each bite a sheer delight. The accompanying vegetables were revelations, a reminder of just how good such simple things as peas and potatoes can taste when they are picked at their prime, selected with care, delivered field fresh and cooked to perfection.

The pattern continued with dessert, the blueberries in custard pastry as fresh and sweet as any we could remember (so good that the honey lemon balm ice cream served alongside was, if anything, unnecessary overkill -- the berries were more than good enough to speak for themselves).

The restaurant also features local wines, and Elaine's white and Jeff's red, both from the Niagara region's Angels Gate Winery, were perfect accompaniments to their respective dishes and fully in keeping with the overall outstanding level of the meal. All this in a cozy, calm, casual setting (the restaurant is in a converted house) with no pseudo sophistication or putting on of airs. This is just a comfortable place to relax and savor great food.

Woodstock might not be on too many folks' lists of final destinations, but for those who might have occasion to be in the vicinity, a trip to Six Thirty Nine would be well worth their while.

“Consistently wonderful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 4, 2013

I have been to this restaurant four times now and each experience has been excellent. Today, I took a friend there for lunch to celebrate her birthday. We started with asparagus soup, which was velvety and smooth with excellent asparagus flavour. I had the gnocchi as my main. It was very good, full of flavour and delivered to the table hot. My companion had a tomato and bocconcini salad. The plating was gorgeous and colourful. She loved the mixed of flavours that included a tomato jam and dots of olive tapenade on the cherry tomatoes. Wonderful experience. Thanks, Eric!

“Excellent upscale restaurant. Well worth a detour off Highway 401! Highly recommended.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2013

Chef/owner Eric Boyar worked in many top restaurants in Toronto, and now operates this fabulous little place in downtown Woodstock. The focus here is local, and apart from the mussels on the menu, nothing was from further away than 50km. Fresh ingredients and very inspired preparations. Foodies will be very happy here!

“Excellent food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2013

Had a wonderful experience at 639. It was our first time there and didn't know what to expect. Food was excellent. We had the mussels and fois gras torchon as appetizers and the lamb shank and trout as mains. (we were served spoonfuls of apple spiced rum sorbet between courses to cleanse the palate - great!). Presentation of food was great. Staff helpful and attentive but not intrusive. Atmosphere very pleasant. They have a chefs table for four in the kitchen, too! Food suppliers listed on back of menu, most are local. They did everything spot on!
