“Beautiful room, fantastic breakfast”
Reviewed August 5, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at the inn for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. When we arrived we told Ian we wanted to see a moose and he replied there is one in the lake now. The moose made an appearance every morning at 6 am. The brekfast were wonderful. One of our party is allergic to eggs so the devised a different breakfast for her when necessary . Ian and Penny were terrific hosts.

This is a small, carefully-managed bed and breakfast set in a rugged birch wood near a beaver pond. The owners are attentive, know the island well and arevhelpful with suggestions for getting the very most from a two to four day visit to the island. There are four themed rooms and they are accurately depicted on the b&b's website. In the best English b&b tradition, the gardens are welcoming and delightfully unfussy, the rooms amply supplied with books, bric a brac, tea services. The recommended approach by ferry is shorter than the alternative and charming. Breakfast is served around eight, and promptness appreciated.

Stayed for only one night but wished it had been longer! Run to a very high standard by an Englishman and his Canadian wife who both went to great trouble to help and advise us on how to get the best out of our trip to this stunning part of the world. The rooms are spectacular and the breakfast pancakes were delicious so would love to return.

I booked the African Room for myself, however later on my mom decided to travel with me. I advised Ian and Penny ahead of time and when we arrived Penny advised us that they upgraded us to the Russian Suite, at no extra charge. What a great surprise. The suite was absolutely stunning. Huge (and comfortable) king size bed, beautiful bathroom, lovely sitting room with a fire place. The selection of teas in the room was an added bonus (we drank a lot of them). The place is super clean and the rooms are luxurious - staying in any of them would be a treat. The place is in a perfect spot for driving the Cabot Trail. The breakfasts provided by Ian were delicious. This is the height of luxury on Cape Breton.

This B&B is located part way up the east side of the Cabot Trail. It's ~ 40 minutes form Baddeck and from Ingonish. It's a lovely drive in either direction. There is a separate pond on which you can go canoeing. Ian was genial and served a lovely breakfast out on the enclosed porch. We saw a number of ruby throated hummingbirds.
We had originally booked the Iris suite, but were told ~1 week before arriving that renovations weren't done and were given the separate Rose cottage at the same rate. The setting there was fantastic.....looking through the birch trees towards the lake. The cottage is spacious, more so than the pictures on the very helpful website show.
Ian gave great food recommendations for Ingonish.

Room Tip: Any of them are nice.

There may be lots of motels and B&Bs in Cape Breton but this seemed to be the best quality. We took the Conservatory room which looked like it was from a home decorating magazine. It was clean with beautiful furniture, french doors looking out onto a manicured garden and a lake and little touches like English porcelain tea cups in our room. Ian, our host, cooked us a great hot breakfast and we sat in the front room watching hummingbirds use a feeder outside the breakfast room window. There's a canoe you can borrow to row on the lake. The nearest towns with restaurants are just over half an hour drive away. There's also free Wifi and satellite TV, if you don't want to completely unplug from the rest of the world, but the beauty of Indian Brook is that it's quiet and has hiking trails and lakes/rivers.

Room Tip: The Conservatory has a claw foot tub with a hand-held shower head. This can be difficult to wash yo...

We were given this outing by our children as a birthday gift. We own a cabin on a lake and we have our own walking trails and a nice property at home. It was such a pleasure to get away from them and let someone else do the work and cook. Ian and Penny , altough from away, could pass as Capers easily. We had a previous engagement for Monday and considered cancelling it and staying another night. The Rose cottage is a fantastic accomadation. A marvelous place to go and just read and enjoy the lake. The dining was gracious and delicious and plentiful. This was much like going to friends for the weekend.

Room Tip: WE had the Rose Cottage , a log cbin cottage, near the main house. Quick looking out ove r the lake.
