I went down with about 40 friends into the unknown and what we ended up with was the most beautiful... open hearted ...gorgeous land..best food ever trip I have ever had! The staff were simply the most thoughtful and lovely...Koralia was absolutely beautiful. The food made me remember why i should eat organic....and their hearts were something to write home about. Getting a break from the city to shower in the open air....feel the sun and rain on me as I was doing so was magical. The treated us like family and for that i am forever grateful. This is a wonderful place to undo the daily grind and remember what life is all about!

Room Tip: Go for a room away from the office...they are a little cooler ;)

I had been wanting to go to Playa Koralia for over a decade and I finally made it there with my family this August! As soon as we arrived we were greeted by their staff and offered us a refreshing and tasty aphrodisiac fruit beverage. After meet and greet, they gave us a tour of the space and followed by our bungalow, "Shanghai". Each bungalow has a name with particular theme. The best part of the bungalows are the bathrooms - outdoor shower, totally private and among a beautiful skyline at daytime and at night, surrounded by the sound of birds and the tropical setting. The beds are beautifully decorated with flower petals, and covered with mosquito netting which is wonderful. (I always get bit and while at Koralia, no bugs nor mosquitos came to my bed!). Koralia is very peaceful and quiet. One can hardly hear anyone else speak. One can walk around and discover the terrain filled with many hamocks for folks to relax at. and of course at each bungalow once has a hamoc too! I loved the decor of each cabana and it is so well cared for. It is very clean. Even the water at the bathroom sinks seemed so clean and pure, I could brush my teeth with the sink water.

The beach is magnificent, walking steps from the bungalows- the beach feels all to oneself, and the ocean is clean, (not polluted like in unfortunately seen in Santa Marta). The beach is surrounded by mountains and gorgeous lush tropical landscape. On one afternoon, we took a walk to the little town of Buritaca, a 35 minute walk on the beach..so pleasant! There are tours offered at Koralia for those wishing to explore the surrounding areas as well, such as "Ciudad Perdida" (the lost city)...I shall check it out during my next visit there!

The bar is quite a fun hang out place, where different music is played and tasty cocktails and juices served. I had the best pina colada there! I enjoyed the meals offered during our breakfast, lunch and dinners. Each meal is prepared fresh from the day. One must know that the meals are served the same menu to everyone, so it is not a la carte. I actually loved every dish, from fruits and salads to fresh seafood and paellas, soups, and fabulous desserts! Their coffee is so goood too! Everyone who works there are so friendly and accommodating.

Playa Koralia is a paradise. The whole purpose is to disconnect from the everyday work shift, not have tv either...to simply be in the moment. It is quite romantic too. This is the perfect vacation for someone in search of an oasis to be peaceful. It is not jet setting style nor water skiing type of place. It is sincerely a place to be oneself and feel safe and relaxed. The landscape and ocean is so inspiring, one may feel inclined to write, paint, read novels, search for more depth and feel grateful to be in a such special place!

Very laid back, casual. Invisible good service. It offers privacy - a 3km long beach with 6 people on it. Good trips offered to Tayrona and other places around. Perfect for couples but not ideal with children.

Five colleagues exhausted after 6 days of harrowing work hours searching for a place to rest on the only day off we had in Santa Marta. Surfing the web our eyes fell on Koralia and we took the best decision ever. The place is a real oasis of peace, art and originality. The food exquisite and elegantly served. The staff helpful, unobstrusive and well mannered. We called ahead to ask if we could only spend the day there and they said yes, they sent a taxi to pick us up at our hotel and received us at the entrance with homemade juice drinks and a hot towel to refresh ourselves. The manager is great and speaks several languages. Afterwards we were taken to our small open air hut, near the beach, where five hammocks were already waiting for us. It was the most perfect day ever with massages in the spa and all! We stayed until sunset, which is totally magical from the beach. Good for you people at Koralia, you made our day!

Room Tip: We did not spend the night but all their rooms are small cabins very original and beautiful

Nice setting, romantice, etc, etc. However, very pricey for a chalet without airconditioning, bugs that eat you alive, set menu with zero alternatives...

Room Tip: December/January is probably better as it is much cooler, but the wind may be a bit much.

Hi A_ & A_

I wish you had read the reviews here on TripAdvisor prior to joining us. You would have seen that these are the types of issues that have been discussed. Playa Koralia is a nature hotel and definitely is not for everyone.

I'm quite surprised that you were surprised by the natural element; Living only 2 hours away from Playa Koralia and being a neighbor. I would recommend Irotama or one of the resorts in Santa Marta next time.

Thank you for the "Tourist Trap' comment. That actually brought a smile to our faces :)
We've been described as many things - but that has never been one of them!

Playa Koralia is a unique place to stay. Beautiful property with a long stretch of beach that is undeveloped so it is a very peaceful spot. The food was amazingly delicious! After finshing each meal we looked forward to the next one (being vegetarian was no problem at all). Koralia is like a mix of summer camp/high end resort. Fancy meals and beautifully decorated bungalows, but you are definitely in nature - you get all kinds of bugs and creepy crawlies in the bungalows. There are mosquito nets, but I still got spider bites at night and there are red worms (millipedes?) that love to invade. So you need to be a little hardy, but it is still a wonderful place to experience. We stayed in the standard familia bungalow which has a metal roof which means that it was hotter inside than out (although I read here that you can get an extra fan, which would have been nice, I suppose we should have said something). The other bungalows have thatched roofs, and I heard that they did not have extra heat. We were planning on going to Parque Tayrona on our own, but the excursion made it much easier and stress free. Last but not least, very nice and helpful staff.

Thank you KXP

We are glad you found your stay with us invigorating and relaxing!

The insect situation changes throughout the year depending on the weather. Rain brings out more of our little friends! You may laugh- but on some nights we tuck the mosquito net under the mattress to help seal us in a bit more; while on others we sleep with it open as there is nothing out there.

One of the things that makes the coast, and Colombia in general, so very interesting is the fluidity of the environment. For example, in the USA you can travel from Maine to Georgia to Wisconsin and you pretty much know what to expect, and the day before is very similar to the day after.

Colombia is an ongoing series of micro-climates that change whimsically. Every 30 minutes in any given direction will bring you to a new eco-system, a new weather pattern and new peoples. Our micro-climate stretches about 60k; from where the Sierra's begin north of Santa Marta until you reach the plains out in the Guajira. This is what makes our zone so very interesting.

In the day, you have the hot hot sun, like in Santa Marta, but special is the cool breeze coming off of the snow peaks of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. So, there is always respite in the shade (and hammocks!). The Sierra Nevada is also one of the worlds' formost fresh water factories. It rains high up in the mountain (5,776m / 18,9560 ft) and creates a special tropical zone. This is why the local Kogui mamos think of our zone as the barometer of the health of the world. Their job is to monitor this and to let us 'little brothers' know when there has been a major change to the eco-system and to fix the world before it dies. - Something they did about 10 years ago btw!!

Anyway - this has become a bit of a ramble! We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay and look forward to a return visit!!!
