As you reach Barkha from Muscat, take a left to lead you to the village of Nakhal. A quite sleepy village, you get to see the Nakhal Fort, probably built with Clay & stones. further you drive down on serpentine curves and slopes... passing through patches of date palm fields......and narrow lanes.... ( you need to be an ace driver as the lanes are not one way) you reach the foothills of the mountains...& lo.... you see the warm sulfuric waterfalls...gushing out of the rocks into a pool where one can dip...... the water itself is so medicated that it;s said.... the spring cures all your bone related problems.... to add, you dip your feet into the water.... there r these tiny fishes.... known as Dr. Fish....they come in schools to bite away all your dead skin around your feet...though the feeling is ticklish but worth ..... Ever visit Oman, do visit Nakhal.... The country of peaceful people..... cultured....... honest..... & yes very friendly....

This medieval fort was built by the locals in 630 and used up to 1622 to defend the lush oasis from attacks by local tribes. The fort, renovated in 1990, has a number of rooms showing how the ruling family lived there. Each room has a sign over the door in English so you know what the purpose of the room was. Living room and bedrooms had minimal furniture such as rugs and pillows and some artwork and cooking vessels in the kitchen. There are quite a few steps to reach different levels. Offers a picturesque view of the oasis today which extends for miles with its date trees. There is a wadi nearby with running water when we visited in early May. We stayed about 1/2 hour. There is a Western style washroom on the site, but no food. The fort is a long 1 1/2 drive inland from Muscat. However, it was interesting to see the countryside....small towns, houses, family agricultural plots as well as the desert. While in the fort area drive further along the road to visit the Nakhal Springs. The mountain spring has warm water and tadpole type fish swim up to your feet and have a nibble as you wade in the water. No swimming just wading as water level is low.

Enjoyed my visit to Nakhl Fort. It is well restored, almost movie-set like with beautiful views towards plains and mountains alike.

It is about 1 1/4 hours drive from Muscat.

Also visited the hot springs nearby. These were interesting but not a must see.

beautiful setting and the view of the palmtrees is really magic. It is like going back in another era. Maybe Sinbad passed from this place, too.

From the moment you see Nakhal Fort you will be fascinating! It stand just on top of the rock, very impressive indeed. The forst is huge from inside and from wherever you go you can take amazing pictures as it is surrouned by mountains and allot allot of palm tree.
I actually prefered it over Nizwa fort.
