“A bit of a disappointment.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 2, 2014

I had seen a TV special on Volubilis several months prior to my visit and was disappointed with the reality of the site--it needs some work and perhaps a little more respect. There was little in the way of explanation offered, you really do need to bargain for the services of a guide. There appears to be no attempt to keep people at a respectful distance from the more delicate areas, people in hiking boots were tramping the mosaics. Past efforts to restore some of the buildings and mosaics suffered from poor execution, it would have been better to have left them as originally found.

On the other hand, it is an interesting site and if you have never visited Roman ruins, it is well worth a stop on the road to Fes.

“A Seemingly Untouched Excavation of Roman Ruins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013

This site provides a different experience of Roman ruins than those normally experienced in Western Europe. Although it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it seems to be scantly regulated. Because of this, many of the partially-excavated site are unmarked or poorly marked. While this could be a negative (and warrants purchasing a guidebook to take along with you), it turns out to be a truly unique experience. Instead of over-processed tourism, the visitor gets a feel for what the Roman ruins are like upon first discovery. If you are luck to be there when there are very few others visiting, it can almost seem like you're discovering the ruins yourself! I recommend going around sunrise or sunset to enjoy the magnificent scenery and views. Enjoy the detailed mosaic tile peppered throughout the ruins, and imagine yourself living in historic times!

“A must see part of any tour of Morocco”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2013

Costs 10 Dirham to enter per person and 150 dirhams for a guide. Unless you have a detailed book take the guide as he will explain much more than you could find out on your own.

Site has only partially been excavated which is perhaps a good thing as those bits which are exposed are not well looked after.

Despite being a world heritage site it suffers form the lack of maintenance that so much of Morocco does.

there is a new vistors centre which was "going to open tomorrow" but it looked like it had been closed for some time.

“Picturesque at sunset”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2013

We were so lucky to be able to view these ancient Roman ruins at sunset. After driving two hours from Rabat to see this site we were not disappointed. Our local guide was very knowledgeable and we learned about the beautiful mosaics and ancient city.

“Well worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 21, 2013

If you like Roman ruins (think Ephesus), you'll love Volubilis. Not as well preserved as some European Roman ruins, the site is quite large, and you'll need an hour or so to take it all in. Don't miss the mosaics in the various houses, some of them are really spectacular. The museum is unfinished and is a disappointment - you're better off going to the museum in Rabat to see the Volubilis exhibits. Guides can be hit and miss - we had one who seemed intent on finishing up the tour so he could get to the next tourist, and ran off in the middle of our tour! The basilica is majestic, as is the stork. You can also get a good view of Moulay Idriss from the grounds.
