Description: Habitual visitors to the ancient labyrinthine streets of the Marrakech Medina will be familiar with the Cafe des Epices, a reknown meeting point and perfect location for a respite from shopping excursions in the souks. Many will also be aware of Kamal Laftimi’s other much heralded establishment, Le Jardin, in which he and interior architect Anne Favier have created a true magical oasis located within a beautifully renovated 16th Century building. Entering through an unassuming door, one comes into a lush garden dotted with tables and lights surrounded by the majestic building and the terraces above where one can lounge in the evening and watch the occassional open air projected classic films. The design is very much in the spirit of the 1960s and 70s heyday of Marrakech, a combination of Moroccan and European chic, which is equally accentuated by Norya Ayron’s acclaimed Pop Up Shop located on the premises. With a menu that offers a choice of traditional Morrocan and European cuisine.

We had lunch here today. It is a lovely place to come to escape the hustle and bustle of the souks.

Set in a lovely courtyard, the food was delicious and varied.

The service was fine, no real issues like some recent reviews.

The seafood pastilla and chicken tagine were excellent.

Worth a visit

Thank Gavin P

The service was incredibly slow and frustrating and the restaurant was not that busy. The servers basically just ignore you and then forget what you ordered. The food also took a long time.

The food was actually very good. We didn’t have an empty plate on our table of 7. The place is also decorated beautifully. Nice light and plants and even table decor made for nice relaxed ambience. Most of the staff was also very friendly and patient.
Now this is when things got interesting.

Not more than 5 minutes after we were seated MARIA(more on how we got her name later) walked up to our table without saying hello or greeting us at all says “We have a 9 oclock reservation so you have to eat and get out before 9.” Then she walks away without any more of an explanation. It was 7:30 at that point and we hadn’t even ordered our food. So the entire time we are eating Maria keeps either staring at us or attempting to walk by casually looking at our plates. At around 8:15 she starts freaking out. Yelling at wait staff and giving us dirty looks. We didn’t rush eating especially since it took about 20 minutes for us to get dessert menus after our plates were taken from the table. We even asked her something about one of the desserts and replied “I’m not a waiter. Ask him.” Really?! Who does that?!

Her attitude was almost comical by the time we left. She was standing at the exit when we went to pay. She even had our check printed and waiting in preparation for our exit. My cousin asked her if the restaurant was on Trip Advisor and she said yes. She asked us if the review was going to be good or bad. My cousin said that the review wouldn’t be good and we then asked for her name and she told us “I don’t have a name.” And walked away. ARE YOU SERIOUS??! So, we asked one of the other hostesses her name and that’s how we found out her name is Maria.

Our waiter apologized profusely for her behavior. He was actually very pleasant even when she started getting agitated. He never rushed us, answered all of our questions, and was quite patient.

I’m surprised Maria still had a job honestly. Our experience would have been a pleasant one if she wasn’t employed here.

A trendy place and you'll notice that the prices for dishes become more Western here as well. The garden in which you are is beautiful and relaxed (different from the hectic city), so totally a good spot to cool down. The staff was not very friendly or warm, they gave us the feeling that we were lucky to be there and every question is one too many. All in all it is worth the money, but didn't exceed our expectations.

We did know that Le Jardin was the little sister of the well known restaurant in the Nomad. We stumbled across the green signs while out exploring the souk and Medina. It was a hot day and we needed some refreshments and a lite bite for lunch. Still has a cool and trendy vibe and is very different from Nomad. The green tones give this restaurant and earthly and feel of nature. As well as the resident tortoise pacing around. We ordered a Moroccan salad to share with some bread and we also ordered ice cream to help cool off. We also ordered sprite and water. Friendly staff looked after us. Looked at other food that was coming from the kitchen and it looked amazing. There what looked like a plank steak, it looked amazing. The Moroccan salad was tasty and filled a hunger hole. Refuelled and ready for the afternoon session back through the souk towards our Riad. Different from Nomad, but the same professional outfit that I'm sure will be a success. 5* from us. Will return for that steak in February
