Went to Marrakech in December of 2012. It was great to get away in winter from the UK to the heat of Africa. A mini break for 3 nights four days. Perfect trip before christmas.

The atlas mountains are simply stunning. Wonderful scenery. We did not go all the way up the mountain as we hired a taxi for the day which took us to various locations including the mountains. We did however go up high enough to be able to enjoy the beauty of the place.

Although it would have been good to go by tour bus, it was also nice having a taxi to ourself with the driver acting as our guide. He was very knowledgeable and showed us pretty much all we needed to see in one day.

The drive up towards the mountains was impeccable, with lots of opportunity to take some amazing pictures. Highly recommended.

Stunning scenery and untouched beauty.

Its lovely to get up here and aways from Marrakech. Its cooler and a lot less pollution.

Certainly worth a day trip here or driving through enroute to the desert.

A most pleasant trip but be prepared to walk and walk. The atlas mountains are truly amazing and a must to do when in Morocco

We stayed at the Riad Trois Mages and booked a full day tour with them. I would never attempt to drive to the Atlas Mountains because the roads are very narrow and full of curves. Plus, our guide grew up in the Berber community and his information about life and their culture was invaluable. It is good to go on a Tuesday to take in the Souk in a small town a short distance from Marrakech. We walked through the Souk and saw where they slaughter the animals, and then display them in their stalls for sale. They even have the heads and hooves there as well. The fruit and spice section was aromatic. I have never seen such large fruit and vegetables. In the back, there is a donkey parking lot. They are tied up and eating grain from a bag tied on their head. Along the way to the mountains, we encountered sheep being herded on the road. It was interesting to see Berber houses clinging on the mountainside. The topography changed along the way which was fascinating. We toured a Berber home and saw where they all slept in one room. We also ate along the river in another village in the Ourika Valley. The Berber life hasn't changed much because they are still cooking with a wood fire, making bread from scratch and grinding barley using a circular granite stone powered by water.

Beautiful area, lovely hotels, but hard to find spots to stay unless you book early . Small local villages are becoming very touristy , so go soon!
