“A nice day out with the kids!”

Groombridge Place Gardens

Attraction details
Owner description: Groombridge Place has lovely walled gardens overlooking a 17th century moated manor house. The Enchanted Forest has something for all ages from Crusoe's World with its tree houses and rope bridge. The boardwalk also in the forest is a popular play area with its zip wire and rope swings. The giant tree swings are popular with young and old alike. Two birds of prey displays daily Tue to Sun and Bank Holiday Monday. Don't miss our famous Zedonk (half Zebra and half Donkey).

We bought a voucher from the site ' little bird ' which gave you half price entry and we payed £15 for a family of 4.
We were a bit hesitant after reading a few reviews but were pleasantly surprised, the kids LOVED it!
We were blessed with a lovely sunny day, we spent about 4 hours there and had plenty to do. The gardens are lovely although in the summer I should imagine they are at their best, a few of the animals were not around but again I should imagin this was to do with the time of year. The peacocks though ..... Georgous and so many around for you to look at.
The best part of the day was the enchanted forest, it's huge. We walked there , after about 20 minutes there is a play area that the kids loved, we moved on from there and had a fantastic walk in the woods occasionally comming across the huge swings in the trees that my husband and 10 year old
daughter loved . We came back from the forest in the boat, this was manned by a lovely and friendly gentleman who threw a few facts in on our journey back . We had to pay for this, £5. So not too expensive.
So all in all a lovely day, made all the better from the weather. Not sure if its worth the £30 full price ticket ( and then the boat on top ) but we will definately be getting another half price voucher to go back soon.
We didn't visit the cafe but it looked a little expensive for what you got, a picnic would be perfect if you want to eat whilst you are there.
A note to the management ..... Your not on face book as we tried to 'check in' whilst we were there , I really think this would raise your profile and for people like us who are local it would get our friends asking what it was like when they could see that we had been there. Also maybe some activity sheets for the kids ??
But a lovely day out , thankyou!

My wife and I took our 4 year old son here last Sunday when it was a lovely warm sunny day.

I did look at the other reviews before coming here and do agree with other reviewers that in some places in the gardens some of the ornaments and displays are a little worn but We still decided to visit and our son had an amazing time climbing up to the rope bridges and playing hide and seek in the gardens and the canal boat ride .
It is not worth the entrance fee and certainly needs sprucing up and was also a Shame to see the fort was closed off and groom bridge charge for the canal ride too .

There are a lot of reviews commenting on Groombridge's condition perhaps it would be an idea for the owners to respond to the comments too

On a beautiful sunny Sunday it was obvious that there would be many visitors. However the cafe was unmanned, the raptors were cancelled (why) the car park was an amateur shambles but the box office on the gate worked perfectly taking the money. The gardens were what one would expect in mid March with little showing except the dafs. The house looked unlived in and unloved, such a shame for such an historic treasure. Clearly the present owners are not prepared to invest but just to live on former glories in the garden.

A shame, a real shame that the beautiful Groombridge Place and so called Enchanted Forest is left to go to wreck and ruin in parts. I went with family and we had expectations sold to us by the huge board outside the property. It does have beautiful parts but wild and overgrown come to my mind, under managed also spring to mind. The Enchanted Forest is decaying, slippery in parts and dangerous. It needs a damn good overhaul, sad to say but it does. It has Peacocks wandering which is stunning, a beautiful river with boat rides and a river side walk. The cafe is awful, no feel to it, In and out as quick as possible. Nice parts were the garden near the house, beautifully maintained, the tulips were out when we were there last year and the colour was astounding. The animals were lovely to see and the Zeedonk? never seen one before so that was an experience. Overall, tidy it up. Put it right and get it looking as it is advertised. The price is way too high for how it is now.

We enjoyed our visit, especially the walks and high swings. I'm afraid it has the air of somewhere that's running out of cash, as parts clearly need some freshening up, so it could look increasingly tired if nothing's done. Which would be a real shame. The cafe also lets it down. It has an air of lethargy about it.
