Connemara Cottages
Reviewed February 17, 2009

My wife and I stayed at Cill Cottage on Inishnee twice in 2008, once in May and again in October. We enjoyed it so much the first time we came back five months later, and plan on returning again later in 2009. The sea and mountain views are spectacular right from the living room and back yard and we found relaxing at the cottage enjoying the views and just taking short walks endlessly pleasant. The variety of tiny wildflowers in early summer was amazing. The cottage is set near a medieval church relic (hence the name- Cill means church) on this beautiful and secluded island, and there are excellent walks available right from your doorstep, with wonderful views of the Village of Roundstone, as well as mountains, sea and the Irish countryside, including Connemara ponies- many will be your best friend for the price of a carrot. We have stayed in many holiday homes in the West of Ireland over the past decade, all with spectacular views, but Cill Cottage is our favorite. Although the cottage is set in a quiet island location, a ten-minute drive brings you to the nearby village of Roundstone, one of the most attractive villages in Connemara, with a scenic harbor and excellent dining available at O' Dowd's restaurant, as well as several additional eateries, shops and pubs. A local grocer in Roundstone has a good supply of necessities and the Super-Valu in Clifden has everything you need for cooking and snacking "at home" during your stay, including an excellent beer, wine and spirits department. Lovely Dog's Bay beach is just outside of Roundstone, and Clifden is approximately a 20 minute drive from the Cottage. Clifden has superb dining, pubs and shops with the scenic Sky Road just outside of town, not to be missed. Other scenic locales such as Cleggan, Inish Bofin, Renvyle, Kylemore, Letterfrack, Connemara National Park, Leenane, Delphi, etc, etc, etc. are all within an hour or so drive from the cottage. It's a great place to use as a base for touring Connemara but just sitting in the backyard looking at the mountains is a vacation in itself.

We stayed for a week at Cill cottage and absolutely loved the place. The cottage is a place I would definitely recommend to anyone who would love to be surrounded by the natural beauty of Connemara.

With the light changing on the mountains and the water in front of the cottage, it's like being in different surroundings every time. It's hard to leave the cottage for sightseeing, because the stunning views are hard to let go of. If you go out however, you will enjoy the views and fresh air on the island of Inishnee.

Roundstone is a nice little place, and I also would like to recommend people to visit Clifden, which is a bigger place and has more to offer in terms of shops and restaurants. The Supervalu has a good selection of groceries which might be handy for the first groceries after arrival.
When you're in Clifden, I would recommend the (upper) Sky Road for more stunning views. (see sunset picture for example)

I want to go back!

We arrived at Cill Cottage just before dusk, driving from Knock Airport was an experience in itself around every corner we would have to stop and take a picture of the absolutely fabulous view. I dont think we have ever said Wow look at that as much as we did during our stay!

Geraldine welcomed us as if she had known us for years - The cottage is very isolated on the Island of Inishnee - perfect for what we were looking for. On arrival we were greeted by a roaring fire (which we had to have a lesson in making on the second day!) the cottage has everything you could imagine including its own Connemara Pony - Amy. She was very interested in our shopping bags when we returned from the supermarket - she loves carrots although not too keen on the bakers coffee cake :-)

We spent some lovely days exploring the local area - O'Dowds in Roundstone is def worth a visit for their chowder and Salmon - we have never tasted anything like it. Trips along the Sky Road and also the Bog Road are a must along with a visit to Kylemore Abbey.

We also did a fantastic walk around Dogs Bay and Gurteen Bay taking in some fantastic views whilst experiencing 4 seasons in one day, from hail and rain to sun and rainbows we saw it all.

Our visit was made more memorable by my boyfriend proposing one evening in Cill Cottage - a first we are told! We will be returning maybe not for a while as we now have a wedding to save for!

Thanks for an amazing stay Geraldine, hope you enjoyed your break away and have a very Merry Christmas C & G x

I randomly booked a weeks stay at Cill Cottage after it was advertised on ebay.. I took along my Mom, we arrived stunned by the place. Geraldine was so welcoming, and we had just the best time. There was everything you could possibly need at Cill Cottage. We had one of the best holidays ever, the weather was lovely considering the time of year. There are lots of things to do around the area, Roundstone is a nice little place, I will definately try to go back, but I bet it gets booked up pretty quickly! anyone will get on with Geraldine, and her horse is pretty cool too!! :)..

We have stayed in both Cill Cottage and Island Cottage; both are bright, cosy and comfortable, and extremely well equipped and appointed. The view of sea and mountains from the cottages is second to none in Ireland (and we live in Killarney!) For those who enjoy a quiet, relaxing holiday, this is an ideal location. With the view of mountains and sea by day, and an open fire to sit by in the evening, there is no urge to be rushing off somewhere else - when you are at either of these cottages you are THERE! However, for the more energetic, there are lovely walks around the island, and beautiful beaches a short drive away, and all of Connemara to be explored. Roundstone, the local village, is a lovely friendly place with fine shops and restaurants. This is the west of Ireland at its beautiful, peaceful and friendly best. We plan to go back for our third visit next year - need I say more?

If you are going to Connemara, stay in these cottages. We stayed for a week in Cill Cottage and had a tremendously hard time leaving. The location is spectacular. You will never have such a nice time looking out the window as you do in this spot. And what a spot it is - the perfectly laid out and appointed home away from home. A peat fireplace, everything you need in a kitchen, a comfy bed (we slept like babies), a nice bathroom with the most impressive view ever. And a delightful, funny, smart, helpful landlady to boot. Geraldine is a love and a joy. We wished we lived nearby for many reasons, but one was so that we could be friends with her. We miss Amy, the pony, already. Sigh...getting sad just thinking that it'll be awhile until we can return, but return, we will! This place was too special and too wonderful to only visit once.

Booked Island Cottage for a week's break for a family of four plus two grannies and had a wonderful time.

Inishnee is approached by bridge from the local village of Roundstone and then you have a drive of approx 3 miles on single track road to the properties. Easy enough in daylight but a little more challenging after dark although once you have done it once you are home and dry.

The owner, Geraldine, is a star even incluiding satellite broadband for visitors or the use of her own computer and makes your stay very homely without ever intruding on your privacy.

If your idea of heaven is lively, noisy bars in places that never sleep then these cottages are certainly not for you. On the other hand, if you are never happier than when walking in the middle of nowhere, or simply sitting and reading by an open fire feeling that time is standing still then this might just be the holiday for you.

So long as you expect rain (liquid sunshine) you probably won't be disappointed in the west of Ireland. This is a good base to explore Connemara and Galway with a lovely hostess to greet you on arrival.
