We stayed at Ras Kutani for 6 nights and many will say this is too long, but we do not agree at all. It is a wonderful place where you can truly relax.... simply as there is not much to do!
Beautiful beach, nice safari lodge type of accomodation with good shower. Very open though, which might give some a bit of a shock.... but once you are used to it, perfect.
We took a Jeep transfer getting there (1.5 hours from Dar) and flew back by plane (300 dollars for 2, 10 minutes, highly recommended. David can arrange this via Vincent).
The service is friendly and professional. They help you on everything. The food is lovely. Drinks are not expensive. The massage is also great.....
So, no reason not to go. But do not tell too many!

Room Tip: we preferred the rooms at the lagune

Dear pptt

Thank you for the lovely review and six nights at Ras Kutani is sure to have you incredibly relaxed by the time you have to leave! As you mention its a camp by the beach rather than a resort and because of this feel you can truly unwind.

There are a few ways to get to Ras Kutani - as you mention there's the car transfer, and the plane - we have a daily scheduled charter which Selous Safari Company organises in the morning to and from Ras or you can charter and now you can fly by helicopter - straight from the peninsula in Dar - a wonderful 18 mins journey flying low along the coast - a real experience! If you are interested in trying any of these options please talk to your tour operator or your reservations consultant and we can arrange it all for you.

Ras Kutani is situated along the Indian Ocean, not far from Dar es Salaam in a remote setting. Its on a private property with exclusive beach front. I stayed there for 3nights and had a wonderful experience! Had the private suite with a private pool!! overlooking the magnificent Indian ocean.

The food was excellent 3 course meals served with fresh fruits, salad and juices the service was a 5star, staff were very polite and courteous too ever willing to assist and point you on the right direction.

Fun activities to do include the Lagoon walk, kayaking, and snorkeling. There is an old ship relic you can take a look at during low tides. There is also a sea turtle nest and a hatchery nearby.

Ras Kutani is an excellent get away for relaxation, as there isn't any form of noise or distractions apart from those of monkeys and birds. No vehicular, plane or ship anywhere close. They don't even have TV's on the property its exclusively a relaxation spot.
I plan to go back there during my next vacation for a much longer stay

Reception was excellent, the huts contains everything you need. Service was perfect and the private beach was one you could dream about. Thanks to our friends who found this place for us.

Dear oysesp

Thank you so much for taking the time to post this gorgeous review of Ras Kutani - so pleased you enjoyed the wonderful serenity of the camp - especially the peaceful endless beaches where you can walk for hours and not get disturbed unlike some of the busier east African resorts - its a wonderful place to find calm and truly escape! We thank your friends too who recommended us to you!

The most idyllic, peaceful, beautiful location on the Indian ocean, just a short and exciting small plane hop south of Dar. We stayed four nights and experienced both types of accommodation: the beach chalet was gorgeous and we really loved loafing in our hammocks; the suite was the stuff of dreams - very private and beautifully designed with great views of the ocean.

The food was also way beyond our expectations; fresh, varied and delicious. Wonderful place settings changed with every meal showed fine attention to detail. We tried everything available in terms of activities and thoroughly enjoyed them all - though the lagoon walk should be done as early as possible since it heats up quickly.

Just a word re the monkeys. Morning coffee is brought to your room and on the first day we had several cheeky vervet monkeys come to steal the sugar and biscuits when our back was turned. They took little notice when we tried to shoo them away (they must get up to this regularly) so from then on we asked staff to skip the biscuits and sugar, which solved the problem.

We can't praise Ras Kutani highly enough, especially the staff (hi Lana and Upendo!) who are so warm, caring and efficient. Already planning our next trip to this paradise on earth...

After living in Dar for 5 years and spending a lot of time at the various different places that are available along this south coast trip we are glad we have saved the best to last :-) From the service provided when booking up to when we departed I have only great things to say. The room was charming and suited the beach location. There are a lot of nice personal touches in the interior design which allows you to wind down from it all in a comfortable surrounding. The meals were excellent and we were never left hungry - thanks to the catering team. Our hosts Lena and Upendo were very attentive. We were there to relax and the beach helped provide that escape during the day. I would more than recommend this little peace of paradise on South Beach!

We stayed here on the last leg of our honeymoon, after our safari. I would do the itinerary this way again. If you have an opportunity, fly into Ras Kutani and drive out so you can experience the aerial view, and also the land view back to Dar.

On arrival, we took a dhow over and was welcomed by Lana. She is fabulous! Lana is extremely personable and is a pefect fit for Ras Kutani. She is always good for a conversation - and we were able to snag her to have a drink with us because we enjoyed her company so much! Get her to show you how to play Bao - we spent quite a bit of our time playing this game.

Ras Kutani is all about relaxation. You can kick off your shoes (literally - you don't need shoes or flip flops here) and just laze the days away. We walked to both ends of the beach and felt like we were in our own little piece of paradise as we didn't see many people at all on the beach. The beach itself is lovely, no seaweed and we were able to get some boogeyboarding in. Sunbeds are set up for you with shade for anyone who wants to spend a little time snoozing by the beach. We spent time in the pool as well, and if you get too hot, someone will come buy with a drink for you, and you can cool off in the pool hut! There is only one other property here that has guests (with children) and so you feel like the whole place is yours, especially if you go midweek. At one point, we and another couple were the only people in the whole place - absolutely fantastic!

Accomodations
I think we stayed in #6, but I could be wrong - we had both the ocean and lagoon view - gorgeous in the morning when the sun rises! We utilized the hamocks quite a bit for a snooze here and there during the day. Again the bed was massive and luckily had a fan, as the first night was quite hot. Every Selous place has a theme to their decor, and Ras Kutani is no exception. The walls are a crisp white and the colours of the sea, bright blues, are brought into teh sheets, pillows and wall decor. We had an opportunity to look around one of the larger suites with its own plunge pool. There are a LOT of stairs, but the views are beautiful and the rooms massive. We loved where we were, but if you want more of an intimate feeling, get a suite.

Meals
Meals were a bit different than the other Selous company camps but just as delicious. A spread for breakfast was presented along with the chefs choice - always get the chefs choice, its delicious. Lunch is a buffet meal - but there is so much variety, you can always find something that you like. And dinner is a 3 course meal, delicious every night - we were stuffed! They had a variety of alcoholic drinks that we tried. Just a warning, they don't use a lot of ice in their blended drinks, so I found some of them could knock your socks off. I was always asking for a cup of ice along with my drinks because they were so strong - but hey, I am on vacation, so the strong drinks didn't deter me from ordering more!

Side Trips
Shadrack was our server the majority of our stay. We struck up a conversation with him and was asking about the village walk - he was very animated - clearly he is passionate about his village. We set up a time and he took us to experience the village. This is a must do if you want to see how the other half lives. The children were adorable - we were able to talk to a few school girls and take a few pictures (with permission of course). It still blows my mind today, and I feel like everyone needs to do this in order to gain some perspective.

We also tried the lagoon nature walk - which turned out to be longer and hotter than expected. We needed the excercise after overindulging the whole week but if you do this, I suggest you go right after breakfast. We also wore our bathing suits under our shorts and t-shirts which worked out perfectly because the end of the lagood walk takes you right out onto the ocean. We were to hot we jumped right in! If you get a chance, go see the vegetable garden that they have growing there - the food is so fresh, it grows right on the property! You can also catch quite a few monkeys lollygagging around there too!

We were lucky enough to see the turtles hatching at the end of the beach. What a sight! It was amazing - we were very thankful that the staff came around to let us know when it was happening - we got many memorable pictures.

All in all, a fantastic end to our safari adventure. I highly recommend going here if you are looking for a place to sit back, relax and be spoiled!

Dear princess_lacontessa

Thank you again for your third review for our company - so kind of you to take the time to post your thoughts. Its such a marvellous review picking out some of the amazing things about Ras Kutani - the feeling of kicking back after a busy safari adventure and also the wonderful service, food and attention you receive when you are a guest of ours.

It was great you had the time to do a few of our activities including the two walks around the local area - visiting the village is an important way to see the real Tanzania.

Ras Kutani is a very beautiful and quite place if you want a relaxing holiday in peace- The food and the service was very good. Activities : Riding horses along the beach, go kayaking on the lagoon or in the sea, go snorkelling on a ship wreck next to the hotel, go strolling down the beach. There are no other hotels around and the sand is very white and beautiful.Only downside is that bugs do come in at night into the cottages, since everything is open. The staff once left the light on at night and we had a mosqito and bug attack, we had to kill them with the bug spray. You do have a mosquito net around your bed but outside your bed it can get quite lively ... geckos do come in regularly but they are kind of cute. This is not a place for people who are picky about those sort of things. We loved it because it was very down to earth and "natural" and you never had to wear shoes.

Dear 279Natalie1979

Thank you for taking the time to review Ras Kutani and very pleased you enjoyed your stay, apart from the bugs - in January after the short rains of Dec / January most places in Tanzania experience increased insect life. Mosquito nets are in place to ensure you have a peaceful nights sleep.

We are delighted you enjoyed our natural decor and relaxing ambience
