We booked a 3hour Private Ancient Rome tour through Carrani Tours. (Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill Guided Tour) Our drivers and guide, Nancy arrived punctually. Nancy was an extremely knowledgeable and infectiously enthusiastic guide who was obviously proud of her Roman heritage and loves what she does. Her English is excellent. Being able to skip the long queues at the Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre) was a huge time-saving bonus. We visited the Colosseum and Forum area. The tour concluded behind the “Wedding Cake” where we were given the choice to be taken back to out hotel or remain to explore on our own. We chose the latter and headed to the Pantheon with its stunningly beautifully preserved interior.
Nancy explained the where we could find the location of the assassination of Julius Caesar (the Senates’ location near the Pantheon) and, while in the forum, the ruin of the altar on which his body was cremated. A thoroughly entertaining and informative tour.

Most people would not choose to go to Rome in August
Rome will never be completely empty, but at that time of year there are considerably less due to the heat.
If heat is an issue for you them summer would not be a good idea.
All the guides say to go first thing in the morning, but if like me you are not a morning person then that is not an option.
If you dare, hire a moped, one of the best things to do is go for a drive late at night when most other tourists have gone to bed and drive around all the sites, most of which are lit up at night, it is also a lot cooler and you can take all the pictures you like without having to wait for the crowds to move on.
Picking somewhere to stay is key to having a good time you don't want to miss a minute.
My advice is don't stay right in the centre, but also not too far out you don't want to waste time travelling back and forth.
This last visit we stayed just a 15 minute walk from the Coliseum, so enjoyed lovely walks in whichever direction we took.
As with most cities be careful with your belongings, although i did not witness any pickpocketing on the streets of Rome, it was one of the reasons i had not visited before as it had a bad reputation. I don't think the problem has gone away, my understanding is that it is more likely to happen if you take the underground or one of the many busses that run through the city.
Do your homework before you go, do not stay in or go to high risk areas and you should have a brilliant hassle free stay.

Dino is an amazing guide. His knowledge of history and art history and his love for the city helps to understand and feel Rome. This is our 5th visit to Rome. Dino showed us some places we have never seen. I highly recommend to take a private tour of Vatican Museum with Dino. He explains and shows things very well. Ever the things I though I knew had may new layers. Dino helps navigate the crowds so it is not tiresome. It is also very nice that he genuinely knows history and art and can answer any question in depth.
We took 3 tours with Dino and loved them all. Tour of Rome off the bitten path, Tour of underground Rome and tour of Vatican museum.
Make sure you ask Dino for restaurants recommendations. Every place that he recommends is good and we went to many places frequented by locals even in the most touristic areas. Couple of times when we ventured on our own was not as good.

Allow plenty of time to walk around with water for hydration and good walking shoes and not on a hot day, suggest not on the same day you tour the colosseum
