“Great place, great hospitality”

Lismar Lodge Cottage is a wonderful little place owned and run by Bob and Paul. Both of them are still working and apart from providing holiday accommodation utilise the place as a small hobby farm with chooks, ducks, turkeys, sheep, alpaca and some cattle, plus they’ve also established a small orchard. And the boys are happy to share some of the proceeds of their farm with their holiday guests: fresh eggs can be collected in the morning and whatever is in season on their fruit trees can be picked for daily consumption.

The accommodation is basic and simple while being tastefully furnished with care and the attitude of a good and generous host. It’s basically a large room with an adjacent basic and kind of charmingly alternative bathroom containing shower, sink and toilet. The main room has the kitchen at one end and a comfortable double bed at the other next to a sitting area to watch TV and listen to music (no problem connecting the stereo unit to mobile devices); the middle of the room the dining space. Bed and entertainment area are separated by a moveable Japanese style screen. The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering - including a cast iron saucepan and frying pan as well as coated saucepans. The latter are free of damaging scratches, which is not only unusual but also doesn’t pose a health hazard. The whole place is very clean and tidy; Bob and Paul seem quite passionate about cleanliness, which again is not sth that can be said about many other holiday accommodation places.

After so much praise there's one small drawback worth mentioning: no wifi. 3G worked alright with Telstra but was patchy inside the metal-clad building. The boys have wifi in their house but even their internet connection, relying on satellite, is patchy and unreliable because there's not enough bandwidth for all the subscribers in the area. That means that even if the cottage would be fitted with its own internet access there still would be no guarantee for it working well; that's life on the land in Australia!

But the best thing about Lismar anyway is the energy Bob and Paul give the place. Already at arrival we spent almost two hours of having interesting conversations with Bob (who is Belgian), talking about anything from European culture and history to Australian politics to farming and disability services. The following night we were invited to share a bottle of wine and home-made Belgian waffles with both Bob and Paul, continuing to talk and laugh and bond. And upon our departure we left with two dz eggs, other goodies and a warm good bye.

We'll certainly be back! In the meantime we highly recommend Lismar Cottage to anyone who is looking for a comfortable place to stay that offers great service, excellent hospitality and a centrally located spot to explore Mudgee and many of its interesting surroundings (eg Castle Rock in the Munghorn Gap Nature Reserve, Rylstone, Lue, Gulgong and more).

“A pleasant accommodation option for my pet dogs and me.”
Reviewed October 5, 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Bob and Paul were welcoming without being intrusive. The cottage was spacious and very comfortable. Even with cold night time temperatures I did not need heating. The bed was comfortable and warm and all the fixtures were in working order. The flooring was easy clean and my dog beds were enough to make my pups comfortable. The two resident poodles were friendly and my two border collies were able to interact with them without any trouble but my dogs had their own fenced space in which to run. I would suggest for dog owners that taking a long tether and ground peg might be an option because the cottage enclosure gave access to a workshop area and chicks in pens. I felt more comfortable tethering the dogs just in case they took to chewing something of value or worrying the chicks. It was an easy drive back into Mudgee on tar sealed roads. All in all a nice couple of nights away with my pets.

Liked best: Nice views from the cottage and access to the orchard and fresh eggs
Liked least: I could not see an iron or ironing board in the cottage but the owner said just to ask for anything that I might need, so I guess I could have asked. Mobile phone access was variable.

“Calming Countryside Cottage”

If you're looking for a beautiful quiet and charming place to stay - Lismar Lodge Cottage is it. From being able to collect fresh eggs in the morning to having Bob deliver fresh squeezed lemon juice - this place checks all the boxes for a relaxing weekend away. Surrounded by rolling hills and endless vineyards our stay was topped off by looking up at the evening sky and seeing what seemed like an endless abyss of stars. We had everything we needed in the lodge and our hosts went above and beyond to make us feel warm (literally turning on the heat prior to our arrival so the cottage was nice a toasty) and welcome. I would recommend Lismar Lodge Cottage to anyone looking to unwind and enjoy the beautiful town of Mudgee and its surroundings - I can't wait to go back again.
