Quick meal service, specials available, menu extensive for a pub, meal was hot and met expectations. Prawns were under done we thought.

At the end of a long day, Sandra and i set out on foot for an evening meal in Mudgee. At 6 PM it was still warm, but the four blocks up the Cudgegong River and into town from the Riverside Caravan Park made for a pleasant stroll.

The Lawson Park Hotel, on the corner by the bridge, boasts a pub that we had read about in a guide purporting to name the best pubs in Australia. It is obvious that the author of that guide did not consult tripadvisor, or perhaps there are no good pubs in Oz.

The Red Heifer, as the pub is named, occupies the entire main floor of the old hotel. Like Gaul, it is divided into three parts. A traditional pub, a large indoor barbecue area and an outdoor beer garden.

We were there mid-week and it was cook your own steak night. For $12 we were given steaks which we cooked on the indoor BBQ. This is, apparently, is a common Australian feature, although we did not run into it elsewhere on our journey. Once cooked, the lady who had provided the meat, applied salad, potatoes and gravy to the large plates.

As we had been tasting wine all day, we stuck to water at dinner, which the ladies at the bar were happy to provide. Everyone was extremely cordial and full of fun. For an inexpensive dinner in the land of Oz, we were perfectly satisfied.

This is not a fancy restaurant. We sat at picnic tables indoors near the BBQ. And we were there early, so we were not exposed to the evening entertainment. For those reviewers who have complained about music in a bar while they are attempting to eat, I would pose this rhetoric question, "How often have you been in eating in a bar and enjoyed the loud, obnoxious music?"

For us the experience was just right at the end of a long day of tasting the wonderful wines of Mudgee.
