Spain's Paradors are a mixed bag, this is one of the better ones. Ideally located next to the old town of Cuenca in an old convent. Breakfast was rather good. Great for exploring the town. Eat in town but be sure to defile the old convent with a bit of romance for good measure. Rooms were spacious, a little worn but working fine. If you are picky about your 4 stars this place might not make the grade but location and helpful staff were fine with us.

Room Tip: Reserve directly with the Parador. Tell them you are considering staying at other paradors and they will probably give you a discount card for your next parador stay.

The GOOD
The hotel is in a great location for exploring old town Cuenca and although satnav struggles to find it, there are plenty of signs for the hotel as you drive in through the newer part of Cuenca. The hotel itself is in a beautiful old building which is well maintained. We paid extra to ensure a room with a view and the room was lovely, well decorated and comfortable, with a stunning view.

The BAD
On arrival parking is a problem due to congestion. A man directed us to a spot on the roadside and helped us to park, then we realised he was nothing to do with the hotel and was expecting some cash! Glad we had some change! After we checked in we used the hotel garage but it cost an extra 15 euros!
The staff at Parador Cuenca did not seem to care at all about their guests. There seemed to be an attitude that people are only staying for one night, so why bother. A complete lack of customer service, which was surprising considering the prices they charge.

The UGLY
We checked out the restaurant as a possibility for an evening meal. Nice to see a menu in English as well as Spanish as it helps those of us with some, but limited Spanish vocabulary check what is on offer. Shocked to see the same set menu at different costs! 34 euros for the English, but 30 Euros for the Spanish! (photos uploaded as proof!) This should not be allowed. Needless to say we didn't dine there, and I'm glad we didn't as the restaurant is a long way down the listings on trip advisor!
Next morning we were looking forward to breakfast. We speculated that considering the cost of the stay it might be cooked to order. It wasn't. We arrived at the breakfast room at 10 am (breakfast served till 11) and waited by the entrance to see if anyone would meet, greet and seat us. Some Spanish guest came up behind and just walked in and sat themselves down at the nearest table so we realised we should maybe seat ourselves also. We looked for a clean available table. There were 6 available tables but all with dirty plates on. We cleared a table ourselves and sat down. We observed other guests arrive unsure whether to wait, or sit at a dirty table. There were 2 staff on to deal with tables. Clearly not enough. We couldn't understand this as the hotel must know the number of guests and staff accordingly. They hadn't. They also didn't cater for enough food for guests either. After waiting a long time and witnessing the staff serve coffee to other gusts who came in after us, we managed to attract the attention of a waiter to bring us some coffee. Our pot came without a lid, small point but everyone else's had a lid! By this time we had realised it was a buffet style breakfast so we went to take a look. The bread had run out, the plates had run out, the hot breakfast option was limited to bacon and eggs and the eggs had run out! The cold meats looked nice, but there was no cheese to accompany it. There were fruit, cereal, yoghurt and cakes! We asked if more was going to be brought out and we were told to wait. Eventually the chef brought out more cakes, of which there were plenty already. Guests were left milling around, as further guests arrived with nowhere to sit. Eventually plates and bread came out. In 40 minutes of being in the dining room 6 fried eggs were brought out, causing a near stampede as guests ran to grab them! No cheese was ever brought out to go with the cold meats! When we left after our toast and bacon and cold coffee there were 8 dirty tables and no clean ones. Guests were arriving and struggling to find seats and complaining. We witnessed 2 guests eating stood up, whilst other gusts had decided to sit in the hallway outside the breakfast room. A lack of staff and a lack of food left us extremely disappointed.

In conclusion, the high price you pay to stay here is for the location and the view. Expect poor customer service, then you won't be disappointed. Go out for dinner and go out for breakfast! I have sent a complaint to Parador but have heard nothing as of yet. Needless to say I would not stop at this hotel again and have been put off the Parador brand.

This parador is very grand on the inside. Walking along the tiled hallways, overlooking the central courtyard, one really gets a sense of the history of this monastery.

There are many beautiful architectural details that are well preserved here. It's an easy walk across the dramatic bridge to see the hanging houses of Cuenca, and the narrow streets of the old town. But note that there is limited parking on site. And if you arrive while there are lots of other tourists there, you may not find parking near the parador. Later in the evening, parking opened up more. The church next door to the parador is not actually part of the parador, it's a modern art gallery which requires separate entrance fees.

The room was well-appointed and comfortable, with views over the canyon. The only thing missing is that paradors don't provide kettles in rooms.

We didn't try dinner here, because the prices seemed very high. Instead we went to one of the restaurants in town, which served good, local food in 3 courses for only Euro 15.

This time of the year (November), it's very, very cold outside, but comfortable in the room.

This was our second stay at this Parador, and we decided to splurge on ourselves and book a superior room for our two night stay. The room was the same size as the standard room we had on a previous visit, and there was no robes or slippers provided in the room (these are always provided in superior rooms). It seems pretty clear we were given a standard room even though we reiterated on check in that we had booked a superior room and it was noted on our reservation slip and in the charge for the room. We are long standing Amigos (Friends of the Paradors) members, so this was pretty disappointing. In the restaurant, the service was exceptionally slow even though they were not busy, bread (extra charge) was stale, and when we asked it to be replaced we got more stale bread!

Room Tip: Don't accept a standard room if you book superior. Ask to see other rooms. Also, do not trust your GPS directions. We were lost getting there by GPS and finally trusted to regular Michelin maps. The fellow at the front desk said the GPS does not work to get you to the Parador.

We had booked a standard room at the Parador, however, on our arrival we were offered an upgrade to a Superior room with a view of the Hanging Houses for an additional €20 a night. Having seen the view as we arrived we decided to treat ourselves. Wow it was well worth it. What a view and what a room. I just sat on the windowsill and gazed our across the gorge to the Hanging Houses in all their glory, absolutely fantastic. The room itself was HUGE.

We have stayed in Paradors before, however, Parador de Cuenca took our breath away. It is such a peaceful serene place and the staff were very friendly and helpful. There is not a corner of the Parador that doesn't make you gasp. The bar has the most beautifully painted ceiling, maybe it was the Mother Superiors office in the past! The Restaurant must have been the Convent Chapel and is absolutely gorgeous as was the breakfast served in it.

Thank you Parador de Cuenca for making our stay so comfortable.

Room Tip: If you have a Superior room with a view, request one on the 3rd floor
