“Good location, friendly staff, good food, tired rooms, small pool area.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2010

I stayed with my partner from Thursday 19th for 4 days after cancelling staying at La Calma in Can Pastilla due to their reviews and what it looked like on Google earth etc and stayed Full board. Usually do All Inc everywhere else.

We arrived at 11.30am on the Thursday and they let us check in straight away. Lady on reception very friendly and explained everything to us. As not many people on Full Board informed to go into restaurant overlooking the beach and order anything from the menu for our lunches ( nice as felt like going out for lunch and as you could sit outside overlooking the beach ).

The room was small and a bit tired but adequate hangers and everything we needed except air con. Our balcony overlooked the pool ( same level ) as we had requested adn we could see the sea too. Did not use the pool as too small and not many sunbeds. However the beach is straight across the road so no worries. First night was very very hot and did not sleep much. It is also in a busy area so can be noisy. We asked for a fan second day and this resolved the heat mostly. Still too hot to sit in room though. shower changed and out as quick as we could.

The breakfast was ok. mostly European sort. did have scrambled egg ( not nice ) sausage toast etc but we just had toast or croisants.

Evening meals were nice. not too much choice but you had plenty except they could have put potatoes on as chips gets a bit boring. However what there was was good quality. Staff were again very friendlt and always chatting smiling etc. Lunch meals in restaurant were nice and you could add things not on menu no problem. Again staff helpfull and friendly.

We often sat outside hotel at front people watching and relaxing with a beer or two. Did go to the English bars ( the couple that there are ) but as we have been to Arenal many times for short breaks decided to try the Dutch bars for a change and had some fun in those. Resort very busy and relaxed no lager louts just people having fun without being legless even at 4 in the morning.

Overall would consider agin but might go back to All Inc hotels as spent a fortune on drinks and we are not major drinkers.

Place was well located, had three single beds (old), but was well overpriced at 120€ per night for a room of three. Stay there if you want a good location in between the German and the Dutch part of El Arenal and you are there for a party. If you want to relax, this is definitely the wrong location!

When booking our holiday in Majorca, I did so with an open mind, I have been to Arenal before so knew pretty much what to expect. I read the reviews on the Palma Bay and could see they were mixed, some people like to moan, others expect too much for the money so I was not overly concerned about the negative ones. It was not a "top dollar" holiday so we were not expecting 5 star facilities.

At the time of booking our holiday we were advised that the complex consisted of the Sahara, The Nubia and the Gobi as well as the main Palma Bay Hotel. We booked "All inclusive" and were advised that we may be in any one of the three annexes.

On arrival we were given our keys and told that we were in fact not in any of the buildings but were in the Encant Hotel which was a good ten minute walk down hill from the main complex through a rather scruffy area. A taxi was called at their expense to take us there complete with luggage . Our first sight of the hotel was a positive one. It was located more or less right on the sea front with excellent view, busses to Palma ran from right out side and a bus to the airport went from just 100 yards away. So far so good.

The Encant Hotel was very nice. It had its own swimming pool, lift, etc. Our room did not have air conditioning but was clean, spacious enough and had a balcony. The wardrobe was equipped with more than enough hangers and if you wanted to ( which we did not) you were allowed to smoke in the rooms. The rooms themselves were pretty soundproof as in not much sound from adjoining rooms but lack of Air Con meant the balcony door had to be open meaning that a lot of noise could be heard from the street all night long.

The BIG negative, and it is a HUGE one was that our "All Inclusive " was no such thing. Although the Encant is equipped with two restaurants you are not allowed to use either unless you pay! There was absolutely NO provision for free drinks of any sort, no kettle in the room, no tea or coffee station, not even a drinking water fountain other than the bathroom tap! Each and every time you want a drink or a meal you must dress and then do the ten minute hike up hill , cut through one building, skirt the swimming pool and enter the Habana building to queue for whatever you want. Nothing opens until 7.30 am so if you wake at 6 and go for a walk on the beach you must wait until 7.30 before they will allow you to have a drink, hot or cold!

As regards the meals in the Habana I would say with all fairness that the breakfasts were fine, plenty of choices to suit everyone. The packed lunches were plentiful but had to be booked before 7pm at main reception for the following day but could not be collected before 8am on the morning of your day out. Not much cop if you wanted an early start!

The main meals such as cooked lunches and dinners were varied with plenty of choices but not always to the British taste. Veal was tough as old boots and was taken then wasted by most who tried it. The turkey was pre formed slices as was the chicken one night, liver casserole ( yuck) lamb bones ( yuck) rabbit stew full of bones ( double yuck) paella with a helping of bones ( they do use them bones a lot!) rib bones ( yup, bones again) and oily fish with you guessed it... more bones. All of the above could be accompanied by chips, boiled potatos and the occasional over done vegetable. There was always plenty of salad, cold meat and fresh fruit which was a bit of a God send for some I am sure.

As to the drinks, one helped ones self to a teabag and made their own hot drinks from the machine. Cold drinks were also self service, sadly the machine would dispense plain water 50% of the time instead of pineapple juice.

To obtain an alcoholic drink one had to have the patience of Jobe! Although there were supposedly several bars on the complex they were not always open and which ever one you chose to use the performance was the same. You joined the end of a very long queue , got to the front and asked the solitary bar man for your drink ( we always got the maximum allowed of two to save queuing. ) The drinks were served in very small plastic picnic cups which were firstly half filled with ice. Bottled drinks were not too bad but cocktails were a joke. They were dispensed pre mixed from the same type of machine as a cola is and had as much alcohol in them as the bathroom tap, in otherwords precious little!

The entertainment on the complex could have been called a joke if it was even remotely funny. The first night was the out door Mini Disco, ie three little kids dancing on the floor to some jingly pop type music. This was followed by a high pressure sale game of bingo. Sadly the caller spoke English so badly that I defy anyone to have completed a card and won anything, the bingo session thankfully did only consist of the one card, we never did figure out what the prize was supposed to be.

The bingo was then followed by the "highlight of the evening" about five birds of prey being paraded on stage one after the other and a two minute talk about each birds habitat followed. And that was that! Later in the week we attempted to watch the entertainment again after the bingo etc. This time it was a man sitting on a toilet seat on stage with recorded farting sounds, his telephone would ring, he would run to answer it and it would play music! Not funny!

In the end we just gave up completely! We bought a kettle, milk and sugar to use in our room and took tea bags from the Habana ( which is forbidden) . If we wanted something stronger we bought it elsewhere.

To summarise our holiday I would probably have to say DONT DO IT! I have had budget holidays in Malta before that were all inclusive , the Majorcans really could take a lesson from them. To make things better they could start by providing a drinks station in the hotel lobby, that one could help ones self to, that would go a long way towards making people feel better about things. Secondly, umbrellas should be provided for the long walk, yes, it does rain, even in Majorca and when it does the heavens open!
And thirdly - provide guests in the Encant with meal vouchers or something so as to enable them to eat in the same hotel they are staying at. That and getting rid of the hair braiding touts who hang about the Habana gates annoying the guests every day, would be a big improvement!
