Description: The menu comprises mainly recipes of French origin, chef Valentim Carmo, a young man who learned the profession thanks to chef Guy Doré with whom he worked for 25 years. In addition to the French cuisin, Valentim Carmo, born in the cold lands in the north of Portugal, applies those native flavors of the region in his dishes. Pequeno Mundo has been able to attract a constant clientele wishing to find dishes and flavours discovered here when of a gastronomic visit and returns with friends to share again those moments.

Managed two trips to Pequeno Mundo this summer, and our experience of the past 15 or so years has been endorsed. Food, setting and service are, in our experience unparalleled, and we have never been let down when taking friends and family to this gem. Felt slightly aggrieved on this occasion when the (unpriced) specials transpired to be more expensive than almost everything on the menu. Yes, we should have asked the price before ordering, but this isn't always appropriate. However, only a tiny niggle during one of our best meals of the year.

Have eaten here many times over the years. We ate there 3 times this summer and each time the food was superb. A most polite and welcoming Maitre'd added to the experience. Fresh daily specials always worth a try but the regular menu is really high quality. No more expensive than many other less high-quality restaurants in the area

The food here is fantastic, the ambience and service is always excellent, to sit outside on a balmy evening and to get the food and service which is the best in the Algarve..... couldn't be better

I come to Val do Lobo every year and Pequeno Mundo is still the best - by local standards, and by London standards!

Where to start...

The food is just amazing. Every dish is beautifully presented and works fantastically - we always have to go more than once as you just want to try it all! The specials are always great - they sometimes do a cod fillet with a chorizo crust as a special, which is fantastic. Last time I went I had the special starter - scallops provencale - which was delicious. On the a la carte menu: for starters, the foie gras (served with a dessert wine sorbet) is divine, also the crispy prawns with mint dip are great. For mains, the mango and prawn curry is a favourite amongst friends (some of whom actually get it for a starter!). I love the lamb fillet with vegetable tian, and the fillet steak with dauphinoise. But like I said, the pain of choice, it's all amazing! They have some fantastic wines as well. And the toasted brioche with pate which they serve as cover is always devoured in minutes! You get an amuse bouche before the starters too.

The setting is superb - a beautiful old farmhouse around a courtyard. There is also a beautiful terrace covered in vines at the back. If you are seated inside, the interior is exquisite - the owner has gone to great lengths to source unique pieces. I asked about a beautiful carving on the wall and it was from a 16th century altar. The decor, the Villeroy & Boch tableware, it all just works perfectly.

And the service is fantastic - 'proper' service i.e. where each of the waiters is assigned a specific responsibility on the table. They make the waiters at other restaurants seem like amateurs! It's clear that the owner and staff all take a lot of pride in what they do - and it really does pay off.

Pequeno Mundo may be towards the more expensive end of restaurants, but it's entirely justified. Certainly, there are much more expensive restaurants in the area which aren't a patch on Pequeno Mundo. It's only marginally more than the beachside restaurants. If you're going to treat yourself to one nice meal whilst you're on holiday, make it at Pequeno Mundo! You'll need to book a few days in advance.
