To call this place ''best in town'' would be too easy. It's the only decent place in this lovely little village. But as experienced tourists, we visit this Siena-Montalcino-Montepulciano area already more than 10 years, several times per year, we can say that this is the best place that we know. The food, always based on the regional kitchen but with a lot of inventive improvisations on the theme, is of outstanding level and quality. Host and owner Massimo is a great designer himself, and uses his own-designed plates and glasses in the restaurant. He creates a perfect ambiance in his restaurant, making that you can meet complete stangers there and leave them at the end of your meal as good friends. Massimo has a broad network throughout the region amongst wine producers and resellers, and always comes up with new discoveries. He is fluent in English.

I don’ think that I have ever felt so genuinely welcome in a restaurant. The location in the village is special, the terrace and interior radiate ambiance and Massimo, your host, will ensure that you thoroughly enjoy yourself.

In all honesty the food, while very good, would not by itself warrant the highest mark. I’ve gone for five stars because it would be challengingt to beat the experience of eating here. It is difficult not to feel treated like a king when your host serves you with the best parmesan in the world, the best calvados in the world, the best beer in the world and then lets you fondle his white truffles! His crème brulee is up there with the best too.

The other thing I really like about this restaurant is the wine list. It does have some mortal wines but it also has a great selection of the premium local wines. At first glance these will seem rather (ridiculously) expensive, but from those that I tried I am pretty sure that Massimo is quite selective about those that he offers and his markup is incredibly low compared to UK or US standards.

Went here twice on this holiday. The other two restaurants that we tried were clearly mistakes in hindsight. I’ll block book my table for the week next time.

We dine here frequently (at least once a month). The owner Massimo is very welcoming. The cook (another Massimo) cooks traditional Tuscan dishes fabulously but is above all a great cook with fish. We always let him decide what we'll eat and have never been disappointed. They have a great wine list too.

We were staying in La Locanda del Castello and had dinner at the restaurant. I knew about the restaurant but the fact that it was rather remote and did not have many online reviews basically meant that I had little expectations.

Massimo is a great host and the recommendations he made for wine and meals put the restaurant in very good light. The food is typical of fare you can find in Tuscany and is very appetizing. The truffle dishes stood out. We had the truffle pasta and it was sublime, unforgettable. I am still craving it a week later. Later on we had the advantage of seeing black truffles get delivered in the morning and Massimo had shared with us that we can go hunting for white truffles in San Giovanni in autumn. This personal touch left an indelible impression.

The restaurant is located in a little village and the setting for us (coming from a city like Singapore) was simply enchanting. We actually saw town folk get into the church next door to watch a movie screened outdoors.

We did not want the evening to end even though we had a long drive that day and we were tired. We ended up having the delicious homemade ice cream and dessert wine too.

We happened to find this charming restaurant as we were driving from the Abbey di Oliveto Maggiore and saw a sign simply labeled "restaurant" on the hillside of the town we soon discovered called San Giovanni d'Asso. We walked up the hillside and entered the restaurant from the back where there were candlelit tables overlooking the Tuscan hills and a beautiful sunset. We decided to sit outside the front of the restaurant under a canopy, also with candlelit tables. It was a beautiful setting. Massimo gave us a warm welcome and based on his suggestion, we had a bottle of their house wine, La Locanda del castello. It was fantastic and we ended up purchasing a bottle as a nice memory. Dinner was terrific - get the white truffle and homemade pasta. We loved it so much we ordered a second round. Enjoy!
