Tiny restaurant opposite The Convent, delicious food, fantastic service (and a hug as we left) . The walls are full of photos, wine, books and art, you certainly don't get bored!

A very special place, bottega di assu. It has different funtionalities in one: art and music books, wines and food. It has only three tables inside and some outside. The owner prepares the dishes just by herself, so be patient once you ordered. Every dish is made with fresh ingredients which makes it very tasteful. The panzanella taste delicious and looks very colourful. The spaghetti pomodori e basil had an excellent taste and sufficient for someone with a big appetite. The owner is very kind and speaks french as well. We highly recommend this special restaurant with a very good price/value ratio.

Crammed into a tiny space with just three tables (two more outside); its walls lined with bottles and books on art, travel, food, wine, history & Umbria which you can browse as you relax and eat; great jazz playing (rare in Umbria outside of the jazz festivals in Umbria); excellent food with a focus on local specialties; great wines; and terrific service from the chef and owner -- this is the best small cafe you are likely to find in Umbria (and probably anywhere else).

Our small group of friends spent two weeks in a villa between Bevagna and Montefalco in May, and this gem of a tiny cafe was our favourite. The pasta with in-season truffles was delicious. The aged pecorino with honey and figs was to die for, and worth a trip back to Umbria by itself. The asparagus soup was outstanding and the best we had ever had. The atmosphere was always friendly; the chef and owner always delightful; the conversation always lively -- you can't but feel good in this place.

We went back often and absolutely loved it. One of the very best places to have lunch and while away some time in Umbria.

The cafe does not have its own website, but you will find it on http://www.spiritodivino.net/index_eng.html.

We've eaten at Bottega di Assu many times and stayed in the locanda on via onofri. Have to admit that I selfishly resisted reviewing these places because I don't want them to get crowded and change! Assu does not have her own Web site but her son-in-law has a restaurant in near-by Montefalco and you can read about her cafe on his site: http://www.spiritodivino.net. The Bottega is supposed to be closed on Wednesday but hours can vary. We stumbled upon Bevagna for the first time on a Wednesday and it was open. Bevagna is a charming town in which more time is worth spending than the guide books lead you to believe. A related restaurant (not sure if they are owned by the same person or not) on via onofri, Enotca Onofri http://www.enotecaonofri.it is equally wonderful. We are going back again for two weeks in the fall and staying above the enoteca. Bevagna is only about an hour and a half from Rome. It is flat and has plenty of parking. Since we love the train and like to avoid driving when we're on vacation, we take the bus to nearby Foligno and get the train there.
