“Superb dining experience”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 via mobile

This is an amazing place, with cooking skills that displayed a fantastic knowledge of food combinations, tastes and wine matching that was extremely impressive. A degustation was offered based on our requirement for fish/seafood/vegetarian. Brilliant fresh ingredients within this small establishment. Easily competes with 5 star/Michelin rated establishments in London/Sydney etc. a real find in this part of Germany. To miss dining here would have been a loss. Go there if you can and you shouldn't be disappointed. 6 basic rooms for overnight stay are worth considering too!

“Culinary Heaven”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

it is worth mentioning at the beginning of this review that we hail from Cape Town, one of the epicentres of good life in the world - there is no shortage of excellent restaurants and wine here. We were guests at Urgestein at the end of a 1 week tour through the wine producing regions of Rheinland Palatinate. The restaurant is set in a historic part of town in a courtyard and quite unassuming. We went for the degustation menu with wine pairing. The quality of the food was outstanding and the presentation of carefully designed dishes - each on its own individually designed crockery had many wow factors in it. The combinations of textures, colours and flavours was perfect. Wine pairing from the region again was perfect. The personal service (not difficult, was there were only 2 parties of 2 in the restaurant) was restrained, informative and at times quite entertaining. It is evident, that this establishment is run by seasoned professionals who have been around a few blocks and still have not lost their passion for food and wine. A warning though: This is no place for budget travellers (our bill came to about Euro 240), but for guests that appreciate the effort that goes into the production of an extraordinary meal. these will not be disappointed.

“Very good with further potential”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

Urgestein is on a good way to earn michelin star(s) in the near future. The food is certainly up there. Although my companions found the tastes too intensive, which I did not. There is a lot of potential left in service. First, pauses between dishes of degustation menu were a bit long. There seems to be a shortage of staff in both waiters and kitchen department. And then, some dishes were served to incorrect person a couple of times.

Urgestein seems to take the new direction of german cuisine, with lots of ingredients in each dish and great complexity. Similar to 3-star Victor´s gourmet in Schloss Berg, which we visited the next day. All in all, it was fine experience.
