“very nice, bargain hotel”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

This hotel was an unexpected pleasant surprise. This turned out to be the least expensive hotel we stayed in during a trip in southern Finland and northern Estonia. However, it was quite nice. The room was clean & quiet, and the (free) wifi worked well. The complimentary breakfast buffet was quite nice, with all the typical Scandanavian standards included. The front desk staff were friendly & helpful (and watched our bags after we checked out, until we were ready to depart).

I'd definitely consider staying here again.

Overall this is good hotel by Finnish/Nordic standards - rooms smaller, two single beds pushed together to create a double bed, etc. This is listed as a boutique hotel with rooms decorated with the local Finnish designer fabrics Marimekko which it does have but overall not to the level I was expecting for something different with local charm. The staff was excellent, friendly, and service prompt.

My review is really between 2 and 3 stars and I think it would be too nice to give 3/Average rating here now. I have visited other hotels in Hämeenlinna area and this one is clearly below them, and I would also say Emilia is below quality compared to major chain hotels in Finland. I understand all reviews are based on expectations, but if you are an experienced traveller who typically uses 3* or above hotels, I would look for something else. Overall impression from the hotel appearance was something original from back 70s (or perhaps 80s).

I visited Emilia on business trip, and found the hotel being below my quality expectations. My room had a bathroom which smelled (yes, very strongly and all the time) to sewer. For hotel quest this is not acceptable if you pay standard rate hotel room price. Additionally the bathroom sink was a bit loose which shows that maintenance or owner has not checked the room properly. The room had two beds and the one which I chose was broken so that the a few boards in the bottom were in two pieces and the mattress springs in that part torn here and there. Again, someone is not up to maintenance or then the standards are way below what I expect from a hotel. Finally, the hotel promises to provide free internet but that did not work at all. Reception commented that sorry, we don't know what's broken, just try again. Internet never came available and when I asked if the hotel would compensate, the answer was "We are very sorry".

Breakfast was okay, offered in night club premises in the basement. Basics were available in usual European style. For international travellers it is worth to mention that the room (and I assume rooms in plural in this hotel) is very small even compared to other Finnish hotels.

Our "superior" room was really tiny, compared to the last superior class room in Riga which was at least twice as big. But the room was clean and tidy, so the size didn't bother us too much.

We had asked for a quiet room, so the room 501 was in the top floor and didn't face the street. So no street noise or any noise from the night club downstairs, but since the room was next to the elevator there were often people chatting and making noise right outside our door.

I don't know what was the case with plumbing, but there was a huge clank noise every time someone turned water on. And when we took showers next morning there were lots of air in the pipes so the sounds were bit annoying.

Here's some pro's and cons listed;

Hotel:
+ Not a chain hotel
+ Location right in the center of town
+ Friendly staff
+ Nicely served breakfast buffet
- Breakfast served in the club, which is really dark

Superior room 501:
+ Clean
+ Comfortable beds
- Tiny room & bathroom
- When you come in the room there's no table or desk where to drop your keys etc
- Noise from the pipes & people waiting for elevator

Room Tip: There's a club in the hotel, so in the lower floors it's possible to hear the noise & mu...

The hotel choice in Hameenlinna is not huge. I have stayed in a few in town and find the Emilia to be the best choice. It is very clean, nice bar and morning breakfast! The Emilia has a central location, everything is in walking distance!

I've been in this hotel time to time about 10 times during years.
Price-quality is good. No luxury but a well functioning city hotel,
Bar in downstairs is nice and You can get something small to eat.
For bigger meals You can go out and walk a minute.

Breakfast is OK.

Little hotel in the absolute centre of the city. Walking distance to Bus-station, Market Place, Castle. A bit worn in interior, bathroom very little. Breakfeast room a bit too dark; breakfeast ok.

Not for vacation or romance, but You`ll sleep good enough!
