Owner description: The National Arboretum Canberra is a 250-hectare (618 acre) arboretum in Canberra, the national capital of Australia, created after the area was burned out as a result of the Christmas 2001[1] and 2003 Canberra bushfires:[2] The Himalayan Cedar forest lost about one third of its trees, and the commercial Radiata Pine plantation was burned out, allowing the arboretum to be created. In 2004, the Government of the Australian Capital Territory held a nationwide competition for an arboretum, which was to be part of the recovery from the 2003 bushfires. The winning design by landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean and architects Tonkin Zulaikha Greer proposed 100 forests and 100 gardens focussing on threatened, rare, and symbolic trees from around the world. The site has been planted since 2005, and includes ceremonial trees planted by visiting heads of government and ambassadors. It was officially opened in February 2013.

This is a little known attraction in Canberra, but will have huge significance in the years to come as the forest of trees grow to maturity. This is an extraordinary piece of vision to protect the endangered fauna of our planet, and to have them growing here in Australia in forests is spectacular!

The Arboretum boasts a large number of different tree verities collected in one place. It breaks down each section across some rolling hills.

But I get the feeling it'll be great in 20 years time when they've all had some time to grow up. Until then it just feels a little half finished.

Wasn't great weather so we just drove around instead of going for a walk.

The best part was the Bonsai trees near the village centre.

We visited in june so most of the deciduous trees had no leaves, you can see the layout well and can imagine how good it would be in Spring and Autumn. The National bonsai collection was excellent and volunteers were very helpful. It is free entry but you just pay a small fee to park at the main complex which goes towards the garden upkeep

This tribute to nature is important in bringing trees and plants to the fore. It does a reasonably good job. But give the people running it a decent budget and I reckon it could be outstanding.
