Owner description: Winner of 4 Western Australian Tourism Awards including Ecotourism in 2009. Donnelly River cruises is an award-winning experience not to be missed. Operating daily, with bus pick-ups also available from Pemberton and Manjimup, Donnelly River Cruises conducts a river cruise of the lower twelve-kilometre section of the Donnelly River, within the confines of the D’Entrecasteaux National Park, in the South West of Western Australia. The cruise area, including the beach landing, encompasses an area that is not accessible by 4-wheel drive and is only accessible by boat. The atmosphere of the cruise is to “sit back, relax and enjoy” as you meander through the diversified eco systems of the river. In a conversational format where you are encouraged to join in, Peter & Shaun will enlighten you about the river, the ecology and geology of the area, the fauna and flora and some of the history of the area. The scenery is constantly changing as you commence in lush Jarrah and Marri forests, and then pass through the Paperbark and wetlands, past the limestone cliffs, to the majestic Southern Ocean. On the way you will cruise past the unique holiday huts nestled amongst the towering Marri trees and coastal dunes. While at the mouth of the river, you are given the opportunity to disembark and experience the isolation and pristine quality of the area, with a walk along the beach for about half an hour. The beach is approximately 2 km long confined by rocky outcrops at each end with no vehicle access at all. You are able to stroll along the soft white beaches in virtual isolation except for possibly a few locals trying their hand at some beach fishing. After toe tapping with the Southern Ocean, you will make your way back to the boat where you begin the return journey with a morning or afternoon tea complimented by Pete’s “fantastic” muffins. There is no one photo to depict this amazing cruise!!!

This was a very relaxing tour, the boat is very nice with excellent vision - it has a glass roof besides glass sides. Our guide was Shaun, he was very skilled at delivering his commentary around the questions people asked, not just a parrot fashion spiel. He was very knowledgeable, but was very humble about that, and didn't air it unnecesssarily. He was also very skilled in handling the boat - we had a hairy moment when we met a motor boat towing a canoe with a child in it head on - Shaun did a magnificent job of avoiding him and in very kindly informing the operator of the other boat that he was passing on the wrong side! We had 30 mins to spend at the beach, followed by coffee and home made muffins. On the way back we stopped briefly at one of the shacks where Shaun showed us a very old Marri tree. Unfortunately a fire through this are has destroyed a lot of trees so the scenery is not as good as it should be. I don't think this trip would appeal to young children, but is nice if you are not looking for something too exciting.

Everything from the bus trip out (included in the price), to the boat trip itself was well managed, professionally handled and just a pleasure to partake in.

We took the morning trip out and were picked up at 9:45 from Pemberton, and returned back to Pemberton at 2pm, so it was a long day, but well worth it.

The river was lovely and the beach at the river's mouth was just beautiful, pristine and untouched.

Totally recommended even if you have smaller children (we took the trip with a 5yr old), the boat provides an on board toilet so no "Daddy I need to go now!" moments, and on the return trip there were pencils and colouring pages to keep her amused.

We did the morning cruise. We were picked up from our caravan park in Pemberton and after a 35 minute drive we were on board the boat and quietly cruising down the river. The boat has a glass roof and large windows so we had good viewing all around. Peter, our guide and skipper, has an amazing knowledge of the area and the ecosystem. He is passionate about the river and the forest and his muffins are legendary. The ocean at the mouth of the river can only be reached by boat and the scenery is amazing. The boat stops for about 20 minutes so we could take a walk along the beach - most exhilirating.

Went down to Pemberton for a little getaway and did the Donnelly River cruise. Peter is a fantastic bloke who knows heaps about the area and it's flora and fauna. Peter explained about fire and it's impact on the area. Oh, and Peter's home made muffins are amazing too!

What makes this cruise special is that there is no access to this section of river or ocean without a boat. The prestine West Auatralian coast is spectacular. The operator and guide is friendly and full of local knoweladge. The pick up from Manjumup and drive through the beautiful forest was a bonus, in addition a tea break with home made muffins topped it all of.
Probably a little boring for younger people, but for nature lovers is a must.
