Dog Rock Motel

The exterior of this hotel may not look like much, but the rooms inside are a lovely surprise. They've all been recently refurbished, so they're newly painted and quite modern. Beds are extremely comfortable and rooms are spacious. The hotel is only a few minutes walk to the centre of Albany, and the top-floor rooms have great views. Slightly pricey for the area, but definitely a great place to stay.

Australia is a long way from anywhere. Albany in the far south of the state of Western Australia is even further still. So if you are going to make all the effort to get there, upon arrival, you want to ensure that the place you stay is up to standard. Right?

There are unfortunately outside the capital city of Perth (and sometimes within it), some real “dogs” of places, who despite displaying the word: “hotel” outside their respective properties, should in all honesty be (in a selection of languages) displaying the word: “dump” please, “come and waste your hard-earned cash here.”

Happily for the weary country traveller, the, Dog Rock motel Albany isn’t one of them.

I was on business recently and spent two nights at the motel. First thing to note, is the use of the word “motel” not “hotel” there’s a big difference, both in expectations and quality. In a motel you shouldn’t be overly surprized if you’re not surrounded by the latest’s in fancy in-room gadgets, or that the bedding was last seen in a 1970’s brides “glory-box.” That is after all what you are paying for. Anything calling itself a “hotel’ should be the diametric opposite of this.

The Dog Rock has its share of 1970 glory-box accoutrements. The room was large, yet lacked a certain symmetry of completion. That said, there was a note from the motel management in my room confirming that the motel was undergoing a stage upgrade. So in-room equilibrium should be restored shortly. There was also an annoying lack of power points in the room. The bathroom was functional and the bed comfortable. But where the motel morphed from “motel” to “hotel” was its restaurant “Lime 303.”

I dined there on both nights and it was fantastic. The Thai prawn soup could have been direct from Phi Phi Island, the pork belly from the best hawkers hut in Hong Kong, and the desert- well from another world. Expensive?

Like so much in life, the answer to this question is one of personal taste and opinion. If at the end of the day you want a meal in a lovely dining space, prepared and served by a group of individuals who really know what they are about then the answer is no. If on the other hand you expect all of the above and expect to pay only Subway prices then you may consider it expensive.

The dining experience is only let down at the Dog Rock by the breakfast service. Again it’s in the same place. But this time, its mishmash of lukewarm bain marie items. Whereas, a tight a la carte menu, would really round-out the gourmet country experience. I ate breakfast only once here for that reason.

That said, the Dog Rock leads the pack in country accommodation, hostility and food services.

You’d be barking mad to stay anywhere else in Albany.

Stayed two night at the Dog Rock Hotel Albany for a work function in late June. Booked in to the new renovated rooms and was very surprised. Very clean, modern and comfortable.
Comfortable bed, larger flat screen TV and a well-stocked mini bar. I did eat at the hotel’s restaurant Lime 303, good food and the service was good and is at a good rate.
Will stay at this property again as this is in a great location and will book the new rooms.

Stayed in a refurbished room with 1 x QB and 1 x KS. Good idea Dogrock - King Single was comfortable (and I am 6 ft tall). Had it been a standard single bed, we would not have stayed there as I would have violently fallen out of bed onto the floor more than once. Comfortable supportive mattress too - obviously not old, as still had nice cushioning which is one of the reasons I slept so well. Would have happily stayed there a week or more had I needed to. Perfect location for long-term as well, because you have all amenities nearby!

This is not a motel that you stay at to get away for some R&R, it is similar to a motor-inn (as if you can't tell this by the pictures, or by the fact the car is parked out the front of your room!) so I do not understand reviewers complaining about not being able to sleep-in. Of course you can't sleep-in. Most guests are presumably passing through the area or there on business, and wish to get an early start. It faces a road for heavens sake, not difficult to work out that it's NOT going to be a peaceful sleep-in. Can definitely see why the motel didn't bother blocking out the light and only had flimsy curtains.

Nice new bathroom and I appreciated the toiletries. The complete lack of shower curtain meant that water went everywhere...but I guess it's cheaper and more hygienic not to have one?

Considered eating in-house but the in-house restaurant prices were astronomical (may be fine for business travellers but we were on an interstate roadtrip and just couldn't pay $35 for a main).

Great 'walking distance to everywhere' location - main reason for booking. Laundromat over the road, major supermarkets, takeaways etc.

New and effective heater. No extra blanket in the wardrobe or anywhere in the room. Is that weird? Too late by the time I realised, but luckily wasn't cold.

Thanks for a good night's sleep!

Room Tip: Personally I would insist on a refurbished room, I think it is worth that little bit extra !

Dog Rock Motel is located within an easy walk to the centre of Albany (ie 3 mins to the top of York St).

The double rooms are spacious and nicely decorated in neutral tones. The room contained a couch, desk and chair, bed and side tables, generous sized built in robe with mirrored doors, iron and ironing board. An alcove between the bedroom and bathroom houses a fridge with mini bar, and toaster, and kettle. There is a good sized flatscreen TV, and free movies are shown on two channels. Paid internet is available via a network cable.

The bathroom is compact, and finished with neutral tiles. The shower has a fixed glass screen to partition the shower from the toilet. The entry to the shower is open, ie no door, or curtain, therefore the splashes from the shower make the bathroom floor a little wet.

Toiletries are provided in the bathroom, eg shampoo, soap, moisturiser, toothbrush.

Staff are very pleasant and helpful.

The rooms are a little pricey - a discount may be obtained if you are a Golden Chain member.

We found the mattress and pillows a little uncomfortable.

Overall the Dog Rock Motel is clean, comfortable, and well situated. We would stay here again.

Stayed one night in one of the newly renovated rooms over the easter weekend. Room is spacious, comfortable and clean. A little pricey for a night's sleep but would still recommend it.

Bathroom is also clean and new. Only problem is that there's no shower curtain or door to close the shower area, only a screen which is about half the length of the shower area and hence the floor gets very wet. However, not a big problem, just have to be more careful when showering.

Staff was nice and friendly, no problems at all with check in and check out procedures.

Spent one night in an un-remodeled room at the Dog Rock Motel. It was like going back in time -- dark paneling, plastic chairs, a bar with barstools and a very long carpeted bench back by the refrigerator. Also some soft of pass-through that may have been used for room service at one time? It felt like vacations with my family back in the 1960s in Holiday Inns in the southern U.S. It sounds like the Dog Rock is between eras these days -- the remodeled rooms are lovely, and the LIme 303 restaurant is stunning, with a menu to match. We opted to go for the cheaper rate (we reserved sight-unseen from a tourist office down the road in Denmark) and in hindsight I would have paid for a newer room instead. There's a laundromat across the road in a strip mall, and an excellent Indian restaurant on a neary street. Not a bad choice for Albany.
