I have travelled extensively and recently discovered a market of hotels I have not previously stayed in within Australia. They are generally old fashioned Australian pubs with single and double rooms above and shared bathrooms for gents and ladies. I was delighted to discover this market, traditionally frequented by travelling country people. The rooms are often clean, private and simple and the bathrooms are old fashioned and often include an old fashioned bath in the ladies bathroom. Nightly they are the cheapest hotel stay possible within Australia but over a week or more, they are incredibly reasonable. I was surprised to find out many older Australians were aware of this cost effective way to travel while still enjoying the comforts of a basic hotel and 'Pub'. A much better idea than a back backers for me.
The Royal George, Albany, is a large step above the 'Traditional Australian Pub' but maintains the same charm of basic old fashioned Australian hotels. I stayed on the top floor and my room was freshly painted with a comfortable double bed, night stand, fridge, wardrobe and cosy heater that worked to a precise, comfortable temperature. My shock was at the beautiful view of the harbour from the large windows in my room. The view from most top floor rooms is breathtaking.
The rooms are clean and the staff are quick and efficient with all requests including fresh sheets and towels. Another big bonus for me is the bathroom. I've stayed in five star hotels all over Australia and often shell out extra for a bath or a 'Spa Room' after a big day of travel, sightseeing and walking. The top floor of the Royal George has a ladies bathroom complete with a very large, old fashioned bath. Due to the winter chill in Albany, the bath and my very efficient room heater is a big selling point.
I recommend the Royal George in Albany for short and long term stay.
