We stumbled upon this little gem today, whilst spending a few days in Albany. We come from Perth and live near two highly respected Thai restaurants in the Alfred Cove/Applecross area - this one is way better on many fronts! At around 4.30pm we spotted Joop as we were driving by. We stopped to check out the menu on the front door, as we studied the temptations (only their take away menu!) a member of staff unlocked the front door and beckoned us in so that we could make a booking for later in the evening! That was an impressive gesture! She showed us to the front counter where the owner took our details for our 7pm booking. When we returned at 7pm we were warmly welcomed by the same lady who unlocked the door so that we could make our booking. We were shown to our black table and bright red chairs. The decor is contemporary with warm wood floors, red and black furniture, cool with class. Wood floors, however, low noise levels? We pondered this aspect for sometime and decided the ceiling probably absorbed a lot of the noise so although there is a large dining floor, there is little noise! Impressive. We had not realised that Joop was licensed, we had our own wine. My husband and I quickly formed our first question for our wait staff - how much is your corkage? - her response "it's free". HUGELY impressive! Thrown so joyously by this revelation, we studied the extensive menu and sipped the cold water that was delivered to our table as soon as we were seated. Two wine glasses and an ice bucket quickly followed. We looked over to a couple seated nearby, and saw two enormous dishes placed before them. Impressed again! My husband chose his favourite, Choo Chee prawns in seconds. I really wanted the red curry duck, but we decided the two were too similar so I looked for something else. The duck version of the Pad Kapow jumped out at me and a serve of steamed rice was ordered to go with our mains. The dishes were promptly placed on our table and even a Thai elephant would have been impressed with the size of these dishes! There was certainly a lot of Kapow in the Pad Kapow! We ordered the medium heat and it was perfect. It had Kapow without removing your tonsils. The dish was fresh, spicy, full of perfectly cooked (and crunchy vegetables) and delicious. The generous serve of duck just melted in your mouth. Impressed! The Choo Chee prawns were fresh, in abundance, and the dish also contained vegetables done to perfection. Impressive. BUT the curry, oh the curry, was fabulous, thick, creamy and once again you get to choose the spice level. Ours was medium - perfect, fresh, zing! Enough spice to let you know there is heat in the dish, not enough to make your heart burn keep you up all night! Very impressive. We did our best to get through it all however, there was food left on both plates when we were finished although there were no signs of prawns or duck in either of the leftover plates! BEWARE: there is a chirpy blonde waitstaff member who had us ordering take away sticky rice desserts before we could say "I am full!" Highly impressive, we are not easily roped in! Several times during the meal we had various staff glide by to check on us. Totally non-intrusive, cheerful and polite. Impressed? You bet! Other Thai restaurants, go and see how it is done! We dare you! Finally, just consumed that sticky rice with taro, a really authentic Thai delight. Thank you so much all at Joop! Amazing! If you have bothered to read all of this, stop reading and go eat at Joop!
