Big Grove Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #8 of 18 Albany B&B and Inns
Reviewed February 3, 2014

I have just returned to Perth with my wife, having stayed at the Big Grove B&B. I believe these reviews are to inform fellow travellers of an 'overall' experience of the accommodation. It is a good thing that I am able to remain subjective and not be influenced by someone else who seems to have taken a personal dislike to their host (nala55647).
When staying in a B&B you are a paying guest, paying yes, but also a guest in someone's home. You have chosen this either because of convenience or because of not wanting to pay hotel prices.
It would appear that nala55647 was more interested in the latter, saving big bucks on the accommodation and then advising everyone to save an extra $10 booking fee and also make the owner wait for his money. This all stinks to me of a personal attack on the owner rather than a review of the accommodation.

My Review of Big Grove B&B
Our room with en suite was clean, well-appointed and comfortable.
All the rooms are situated on the first floor leading off from a large furnished communal area (would suit a family occupying the whole floor). This has tea & coffee facilities, microwave, fridge/freezer and large flat screen TV. The TV is sometimes affected by atmospherics in the evening, but the TV in each room is not affected.
This did not bother us as we socialised with the other traveller’s, letting each other know of the wonders or lemons found on the previous days outing.
Our host, Jim, was very hospitable, always had a smile and a joke. He is very knowledgeable of the local area and would go the extra mile to ensure you had an enjoyable time. I noted that he was the same with the other traveller’s, even offering others to loan his binoculars for a better view of the King George Sound.
There are numerous paintings and historical artefacts, one lady traveller said although interesting it was a woman's nightmare for dusting; from a man's view it was really interesting period! Jim has information on every piece and is very proud of his collection; after all it is his home.
With regard to value one has to first mention the breakfast, which is included in the price. There are all manner of fruits and cereals, fresh brewed coffee and tea. This was followed by a full cooked breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast. All produce was sourced locally and this was evident in the taste. Secondly, we paid $125 per night for two, inclusive of breakfast; considering this was still during school summer holidays it was a bargain.
We hope to return to Albany and would not hesitate to stay at the Big Grove B&B again, or recommend it to our friends.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet. There is one room that has an adjoining shower/bathroom, the other two have en...

We booked this accom directly with the owner so paid the full price and he benefited by not having to pay any booking agencies a percentage. Owner is elderly and the maintenance around the property was neglected. The owner seemed friendly enough but made constant remarks about saving on this and that.
Our room was not serviced during our stay. One add (Booking Agency) about the place said there was WiFi, if there was the owner could not make it work and TV reception was terrible.
We have stayed in many B&Bs over many years, so have a lot to compare to. This could have been better if maintained properly, the owner needed some help. We only used it as a bed because there was not a lot else.

Room Tip: Go through a booking agency, it seems you will get a room for $10/ night cheaper, the owner will rea...

I have just returned to my home town after a trip down south. I stayed at the Big Grove B&B for 3 nights, and it was really lovely. The room I had was large and very comfortable, with an ensuite bathroom - which was nicely appointed. Jim and Jo are wonderful hosts. The breakfast were very adequate, with cereal, fruit and cooked if you want. A great way to start the day. The B&B was very close to the Torndirrup NP, and only a short drive from the lovely main street of Albany.

Room Tip: Any of the bedrooms would be lovely to stay in.

This is the second time we've stayed at Big Grove. Loved the place the first time and no reason to change our opinion the second time! It's tucked away on a bushland property with lots of native birds visiting. The rooms & amenities are excellent and Jim & Jo were wonderful & caring hosts that made our stay very relaxing & enjoyable. Jo prepared fabulous breakfasts served in a beautifully presented dining room & Jim kept us entertained with funny tales & lots of information on local tourist attractions. Looking forward to our third visit; hopefully next year.

Big Grove is set in tranquil bushland about 10mins. drive out of Albany. It is the ideal location for people like ourselves who wanted to go bushwalking in Tornidirrup National Park or trekking on the Bibbulman track. It is also close to Whaleworld, The Gap and the Wind Farm. There are pristine beaches nearby to cool down on after a hard day's hiking .Our hosts Jo and Jim were very attentive and eager to please with even the offer of borrowing guide books and binoculars for our long weekend stay! The upstairs accomodation was spacious and comfortable with views over their bush garden. While enjoying a delicious breakfast we could gaze out the window at the native birds feeding.
