We dined at The Anchorage recently and not having been there for a few years it was great to go back and experience it again, food and service was excellent as usual, we had a great table and the city at night was brilliant.

As a treat for a family (all adults) Birthday, we caught the Melbourne - Williamstown Ferry and 'cruised' our way from Southbank to The Gem Pier at Williamstown, on a clear and sunny Sunday morning.

The Captain of the Ferry knew a thing or two about Melbourne, and the trip was very interesting. Free tea and coffee (and toilets) on board, sit back and relax!

On arrival at Williamstown there was a Mine Sweeper (ship) open for inspection alongside the pier, a market in the park lands and lots of people out and about enjoying the morning. However, we were expected for lunch and walked briskly along the foreshore to The Anchorage.

Smiling welcomes, real table cloths, a corner bench seat with views out over the foreshore, the marina and across to the City skyline. We settled in to fresh baked bread with seeds and olive oil, then five different and lovely lunches and finally some delicious deserts and coffee

Two hours (and a couple of bottles of wine) flew by, we would have liked to linger but we had to be back at the pier by 3.30pm for the last ferry back to Melbourne.

We all enjoyed our day out, our river cruise/s (each way), and our simply lovely lunch. The Birthday Girl was more than pleased with her treat and we would certainly go again - but perhaps allow ourselves more time to explore Williamstown as well as linger for a second cup of coffee in the very welcoming and hospitable Anchorage

The Anchorage is a destination in it's own right and worth 'making a day of it'. Good food is always worth lingering over and when you can sit and look out over water it doesn't get much better than that!

My review says 'Friends' but we are a grown up, wine drinking, gourmet eating family. We didn't see any young children at the restaurant but that is not to say that there weren't any there. This was a special occasion and I was happy to treat everyone to a special meal which was also somewhat more expensive than we would usually expect to pay, but the unique location, and the good quality food, pleasant service, 'table cloths' and up market presentation, were good value.

Hint: Park at The Art Centre on St Kilda Road (All Day Weekend Parking for a flat rate of $12, clean rest rooms) then just walk along St Kilda Road and take the steps down to the river. The Ferry www.williamstownferries.com.au berths on the river level and you can get a great coffee from the Southbank Food Hall while you are waiting!

The Ferry runs more services than are shown on the timetable depending on the day (weather, special event), and how many passengers will be returning from Williamstown. You can ring or simply ask when you are getting your tickets quayside for the outward journey

We have visited The Anchorage many times over the years. On a couple of occasions we have had hits & misses on service, however the food has always been excellent. Being a converted boatshed the property has a lot of character. It is not a cheap restaurant, and is best reserved for special occasions. If you like steak you must try 'The Anchorage' which is a quality spin on surf and turf - eye fillet topped with a rich seafood sauce with prawns and scallops - it is superb. At $40 it is also quite good value given you do not need to order vegetables with it.

We visited last weekend and one point to note, a couple of our party had the prawn cocktail. One of the party is sensitive to chilli or anything spicy. Even though it did not say it on the menu the cocktail was a little spicy, so do not order if you have a dislike for anything spicy!

The Anchorage is one of those restaurants you take guests from interstate or Overseas, it's location is superb, the food is always of high standard, a safe, classic menu for all ages and demographics. The staff are some of the best around, subtle but accomodating and attentive. The interior is charming, with nautical memorabilia collected it would seem by the owner with a passion for sailing at various international regattas and cruising around the world. A venue of great wamth and comfort.

Decided to check the place out on Sunday afternoon. Were invited to come in for coffee and sit outside on the decking overlooking the bay and marina, by the owner. Nothing light to order on the menu, so settled for coffee and chips! A waiter had just given us plates, serviettes forks, when along came Sharon (manager) and rudely asked us if we were only eating chips and nothing else, then picked up the plates and inspected to see if we had marked them and promptly took them away. How rude! Everyone who came to sit out on the decking was met by the same "sorry" nothing light on the menu but you can order chips! Very disappointing and totally overpriced for such a lovely location!
