“Cheap but good!”
Reviewed February 7, 2014 via mobile

Arrived in town after a long drive, weather hot and stifling. A short walk along Chapel St led us to the dumpling house. The decor was a mix of China and Victorian!

Service was immediate. The prices are amazing and a good selection of dumplings were ordered. The wine list offered two choices - one white or one red. The White was a NZ Sauvignon Blanc and at $10 fantastic value. The beers were Chinese and refreshing.

The dumplings both steamed and fried were excellent. Hot, tasty and served quickly. Just the thing needed at the end of a long day.

“Certainly not 'the best dumplings in town'”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Claims to serve the best dumplings in town are far from true. The prawn dumplings wanton wrapper was like a pirelli rubber tyre, maybe less chewy. The only half decent dumplings were the pork and prawn wantons and the pork dumplings in soup. Service haphazard, but cheapish prices. Didn't venture towards a wine list.

“Hilarious”

Cheap and pure entertainment. Good food and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. The music very repetitive but they played Happy Birthday to everyone.

“Worst meal I've ever had”

Dumplings were horrible, watery, burnt, and tough. Altough service was fast, the food was terrible! 0 stars

“Room for improvement”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

It was a concern that after buying an All You Can Eat Shanghai Dumpling voucher that the reviews were so negative. Used the voucher on Wednesday for lunch. The restaurant is large, well set out and has quality tables and decore. The chairs are not so comfortable but the bay seating was good. Browsed the regular menu then was given the voucher menu. Lets get things straight. Shanghai Dumplings is not a Yum Cha restaurant. The menu is typical Shanghainese. Pork and chicken, dumplings and noodles not much seafood. Wheat rather than rice flour so the dumpling skins lack the fineness of rice flour. We had a variety of steamed and fried dumplings,if variations of pork is variety. The dumplings were ok, not great. Xiaolongbao were small but good. Noodle dish was tasty but the fried rice was plain. Service was attentive and quick. Kitchen large and clean and efficient. Wine (New Zealand Marlborough) at $10 a bottle good value, corkage at $6 not so.Prices are very reasonable. Customers were about 50% Asian and as a quick lunch or evening meal of noodles or dumplings, good value. We would rate it 3 out of 5 and it could be improved by better quality and a wider menu selection.
