Art Series - The Cullen
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Prahran
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed March 10, 2012

This hotel has some of the most comfortable beds I have ever experienced and after a 24hr flight from the U.K. exactly what you need. The quality of the rooms fixtures and fittings are first class. The hotel with its unique design and great location away from the madness of central Melbourne, makes it worth the short journey out of the CBD.
The modern art is unusual and required some explanation for a non-melbournite like myself, the team were happy to help!
Having stayed at the Cullen a few times now on business, I can only say that Alicia (hotel manager) and her staff are extremely customer focused and make this the best hotel I have stayed in whilst in australia. Chapel street is extremely trendy, but even I found the shops interesting and a number of really nice restaurants can be found. I will be booking again shortly.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your amazing feed back on your most recent stay at The Cullen. I agree the beds are comfortable! It is always a pleasure explaining the Art work to our guests and it is certainly a point of difference.

It is always great to read that we are meeting our guest expectations and that although we aren't directly in the CBD it is nice to escape to the trendy side of town and experience Chapel Street.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel again soon!

Kind Regards,

Had a delightful stay at the Cullen last weekend. Loved the neighbourhood and proximity to Prahran Market. The room was quiet and comfortable, and we had a very relaxing two days. They were able to get our room ready a couple hours early, which we really appreciated, as it meant we could freshen up and get settled before heading out for the rest of the day. All the previous commenters who said the beds are comfortable are right, the beds are very luxurious. Nice sheets and loved the down duvet. However, while the mattress is very comfy when you first get in, the extra-thick pillowtop is a bit hard on your back if you have lower back problems, because you sink in several inches. Also, the other reviews are correct that the glass-walled bathroom is not super-private, so you need to be OK with an intimate set-up if you are sharing. It was not a problem for us, and the super-strong shower was really great.

We thought the Prahran area itself was interesting and fun, with lots of shopping, bars, and restaurants nearby. Prahran Market is stunning, with an amazing array of meats, cheeses, produce, and bakery items from premium purveyors. (If you liked Borough Market in London, Union Square market in NYC, or the Ferry Plaza in SF, you'll like this.) It occurred to us that with the small kitchenette in the room, we could have dined in like kings just from finds at the wonderful market. (But note it is not open on Monday or Wednesday.) Our taxi in from the airport to the Cullen was $55. On the return trip, we asked the front desk to call a taxi for us. This is a private car service, which was a step up from a taxi, but be aware that it's also $10 more. With a small tip, it came to $70. Just something to be aware of if considering the pros and cons of staying outside the CBD.

The tram system can be a bit hard to figure out if you haven't stopped in the CBD first to pick up tickets and maps, but once we got the hang of it, we found it quite easy to get around to other parts of Melbourne. The staff advised us to pick up tickets at the local 7-11, but I suggest going over to the Prahran train station to get set up. The 7-11s no longer sell Metcards, only Myki passes, and they weren't very helpful in figuring out fares and whatnot.

The hotel staff were lovely, and gave us some good suggestions for meals nearby. St. Edmonds cafe was a wonderful place for breakfast and lunch. We had a delightful evening sampling exotic vodkas at Borsch, Vodka, and Tears, along with some delicious tasting plates. And Ladro had excellent wood fired pizza and salumi. All three were very casual and low key. We wanted to try Hutong Dumpling bar on the ground floor, but didn't get a chance. Maybe next time. All in a all, a really enjoyable stay. Would definitely return.

Dear d3z1n3r,

Thank you for your feedback on your most recent stay at The Cullen.

Always great to read not only about our guests time at the hotel but about the great vibe and culture around our hotel in Prahran and great to hear that you enjoyed every bit of it.

The beds are certainly comfortable and you are guaranteed a good nights rest if you like a bed that is like sleeping on a cloud.

In regards to the Tram tickets the City of Melbourne are looking into the Myki passes and looking to create a Myki Visitor pass which will make it much easier for travellers to Melbourne to get around.

Thank you again and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Cullen soon!

Kind Regards,

Starkly modern building warmed by clever use of colour that offsets the slightly disturbing artwork - most of our business group loved it but agreed smaller children might find some of it challenging, though the strong colours and bold lines might instead fire their creative streak!
My fairly compact room was imaginatively decorated to suit the art, with a little kitchenette a nice touch.
As a single guest the semi-opaque glass in the bathroom didn't bother me, and made the tiny space feel that bit bigger.
I'd have liked better mirror lighting in there for applying make-up, but that's a small quibble.
The bed was super-comfy, the internet efficient, and the room quiet - I was on a side street.
We ate both lunch and breakfast on the ground-floor terrace. Service was slow, very slow at breakfast time (frustrating when you ask for more milk and it arrives after you've given up and finished your breakfast anyway) but the coffee was excellent, and the service elsewhere seemed efficient.
As for the area, my business trip didn't allow me to explore, which seemed a pity as the streets around seemed packed with interesting places designed for people to stroll past.

Room Tip: Get on on the side street to avoid tram noise

Dear Jacqui,

Thank you for your review, it certainly sounds like we ticked all the boxes.

Adam's work can certainly generate some interesting comments, 'slightly disturbing' is one way to describe some of his art. As you pointed out, we use the work in the hotel as a feature, akin to a gallery space, creating an interesting environment for work and play.

Its such a shame you didnt get to experience all that Prahran has to offer. The suburb is so vibrant, full of stores and cafes and a fantastic nightlife, be sure to stop past the Guest Experience Desk next time you are in town for a few local secrets.

We were greeted by very efficient, professional, well groomed and unpretentious staff.

The building is amazing and love the art throughout the hotel.

The rooms were a tad small but very comfortable and tastefully presented. Every time the room was serviced it was quick and flawless. I think one time they even sprayed some scent in the room. A very nice touch!

The foo at the restaurants was nice and the staff were professional there also.

I must say the front office staff are an asset to The Cullen. They are so friendly and helpful.

It is in a great location which I love and I would stay again!

Normally stay in the CBD and found this funky hotel a refreshing change. Artwork is great and rooms are spacious and comfortable with everything you need. Breakfast in the terrace was delicious. Unfortunately upon checkout I was slugged with a 3.5% surcharge for using my Amex card. Why do some hotels try to suck a few extra bucks out of you at the risk of losing a customer. The short sighted person who implemented this has obviously got no idea how to run a business and retain customers. This hotel is profiteering from this charge and should not get away with it. Unfortunately it totally ruined what was otherwise a good stay.

The credit card transaction fee is becoming common practice in hotels and restaurants accross Australia. While we do have a transaction fee, there is always the option to settle your account with cash or Eftpos on check-out, or direct deposit for guests who wish to pre-pay and avoid the fee. All our staff are more than happy to discuss these options with you for next time, please feel free to give us a call.

I hope to welcome you back to The Cullen soon,
