Description: Fen - low-lying flat coastal land. Our small restaurant in seaside Port Fairy was formerly known as The Stag Restaurant. We have been open since March 2015 and have recently re-branded to Fen Restaurant in March 2016. Fen's brand of modern dining combine innovative native ingredients with more traditional produce to create food that is uniquely Australian. Our drinks list is exclusively Australian and favours small-batch, handmade, low intervention, often organic or bio-dynamic wines and spirits.

After researching and reading reviews on TripAdvisor and others online we chose this restaurant based on positive reviews for the long weekend in June. But, on the night all six of us ladies were 'underwhelmed' by the food - both the portion size and lack of flavour. For example, the prawn entree was minute, to say the least, and the duck confit, chosen by a majority, for a main was lacking a depth of flavour and was therefore not memorable.
Such a pity about the food as the service was excellent and is the ambience of the restaurant itself.
We had intended to have desserts but, decided to forgo them given our disappointment in the first two courses.

It was a weekend away with out kids. We had walked through the town, staying in accommodation on the water. Perfect location, picturesque and relaxing. We had difficulty deciding where to go but choose the Stag.
The welcome was genuine and the surrounds were uniquely fitting of this century plus establishment.
The selection of wines and food available had a leaning to local produce and had plenty of variety. The staff left nothing to chance and were on hand for anything you required.
The food was exceptional, well presented and faultless.
We enjoyed it so much that we went again the following evening and were suitable impressed again. I would recommend it without hesitation.

We ate there in April. When we got there the service was good. I ordered the Shrimp appetizer, and when it came, I felt the shrimp was underdone. I asked it to be cooked more, from then on, we were treated like we had committed a crime. My appetizer, arrived with our entry, and was just dropped on the table. We will never go back, but if you are going there, just eat what ever is put in front of you, as they can't take any negative comments. Was expensive for what you get.
