Description: Fen restaurant is closed permanently. Fen - low-lying flat coastal land. Our small restaurant in seaside Port Fairy was formerly known as The Stag Restaurant. We have been open since March 2015 and have recently re-branded to Fen Restaurant in March 2016. Fen's brand of modern dining combine innovative native ingredients with more traditional produce to create food that is uniquely Australian. Our drinks list is exclusively Australian and favours small-batch, handmade, low intervention, often organic or bio-dynamic wines and spirits.

Visiting Port Fairy is always a treat and enjoying the fabulous gourmet experience at The Stag along with the excellent service makes this a regular destination of choice. We dined with another couple and chose the Degustation Menu - and we were extremely happy that we did! Fortunately the servings were of a size that allowed us to enjoy each and every ingredient and the presentation was artful but not pretentious. This is a chef who knows his stuff! A wonderful selection of local produce shown off with pride and skill. The wine list was also carefully chosen with a clear knowledge of the benefit of wisely matched varieties to enhance the menu. We all considered our evening's dining experience to be worth what it cost which was commensurate with what we'd expect to pay in any similarly high quality gourmet restaurant in Melbourne. The staff were also delightful and contributed to our having a most enjoyable experience. We'll be back!

Great service interesting menu but food portions were too small. Wouldn't go back after we experienced Merrijig Inn this place wiped the floor on every scale - sorry The Stag you need to look at your competition for price.

Decided to try something new on an outing as a treat for my mother. Wandered into a quaint establishment with comfortable decor that set the mood extremely well. The quality service began as soon as we stepped inside and continued through to the end. The menu had a good variety with added daily specials. Servings were adequate for an upmarket restaurant and the presentation, quality and taste were excellent. We would highly recommend this place for a romantic or special dinner.

We stayed in Port Fairy for only one night and happened to be across the road from this restaurant, the food was absolutely fantastic, the service was great and the price was definitely a reflection of quality. We would certainly recommend this place to people who don't mind spending a few penny's on a great night out!! Well done Chef and staff :)

We had dinner in The Stag the evening before the Port Fairy Folk Festival kicked in. He had steak; I had duck. His was the more balanced meal with its meat (perfectly done), homestyle chips and salad. My confit of duck (one small skin-covered drumstick) was a tad protein-, carb- and fat-loaded. A side salad may have assuaged my pangs of guilt; a few slender asparagus spears did not quite manage to. Service was discreet and friendly, music was just right and candles in the window, echoing the street lighting beyond, made for a lovely romantic atmosphere. There was no apparent air conditioning but a breeze reached us through the open door. Our meal was somewhat pricey, but not beyond the bounds for such a venue. Would recommend this restaurant for a special dinner, especially for couples.
