You almost want it to rain while you're here, so that you can spend some time relaxing guilt-free in the lovely sitting room. Or to have sunshine and a day out from sightseeing so that you can stake out the different outdoor spots with a good book, following the sun around from the lavender-scented courtyard garden to the deck overlooking the estuary. The rooms are comfortable, the breakfast delicious, with an intriguing choice of hot meals as well as lovely poached pears and homemade granola, and the tea and shortbread on tap very welcome. No lift, and rooms are quite compact, so try to pack a small bag rather than having to lug your whole suitcase up the very long staircase then manoeuvre around it. The piped music in the public areas gets a bit much after a while - basically nice, but once you've heard the loop a couple of times you wish you could switch it off.

Room Tip: The corner room overlooking the riverfront has a bigger shower, with more space to lay out your stuff...

Oscars is a wonderfully restored building, absolute riverfront.
Don't be fooled by the photos. All you get as private space is a small bedroom but if that's what you are expecting you won't be disappointed.
Outstanding breakfasts and walking distance to the town centre for other meals.
Property is for sale, lets hope the new owners respect it.

A four night stay in Oscars for the famous Port Fairy Folk Festival simply added to a fabulous weekend of music and poetry. As return visitors it was great to see that the new manageress Kirstyn has put the spark back into Oscars which may have been fading over the last couple of years. Rooms upstairs (airconditioned) are the best although the one with arguably the best view does have the smallest bathroom but not really an issue for us. On the other hand there is also a gigantic room with a huge bathroom but not quite as good a view. Depends what's important to you, although for me the views over the boardwalk, marina & river are iconic.
Great big breakfasts will keep you going through lunch and even though there for four days there was still enough variety. Service is either in the dining area or on the verandah depending on you.
Downstairs lounge / common area is huge and beautifully furnished, while the outdoor areas are small but private. Short walk to some great local pubs and fish & chip restaurant and a very good upmarket restaurant Merrijig are both less than three minutes walk.
Free wifi was reliable after apparently being overhauled recently.
A fabulous public golf course is about a 5-7 minute drive and for $40 you can play one of Australia's top 100 courses. A genuine links challenge right on the Bass Strait coast
If you are travelling the Great Ocean Road treat yourself to Oscars.

Room Tip: The three front rooms upstairs have the best views which are iconic and two have views to the east a...

We stayed one night on our way down the Great Ocean Road before turning inland to the Grampians. Port Fairy is a pretty little town and a good stopover. Oscars is an upmarketr Bed and Breakfast in a nice quiete spot. We were made very welcome on arrival and helped with luggage up the stairs. Tea, coffee and biscuits were available in the breakfast room and we were given advice on a walk to Griffiths Island and a restaurant was booked for us for our evening meal. Our walk to Griffiths Island out the back door straight onto the river, past the boats and then over a causeway to walk the island was delightful and enhanced by spotting a wallaby only a metre from us and a lovely night heron. There were nice views around the lighthouse but the shearwaters were at sea and we missed their return as we were at dinner. Port Fairy has a number of "historic" buildings and wide avenues and is pleasant to stroll around. Our room overlooked the river and was a good size although the bathroom was a little narrow. Breakfast was threateneed by a power cut due to a storm bringing down cables during the night but the cook got on with preparations uising the gas stove with power restored to the area just in time for toast to be made. Probably the best breakfast during our visit to Australia!

Room Tip: River view rooms are delightful although our bathroom was small.

Previous reviewers point out the ‘For Sale’ sign. By the time you read this Oscars may be sold as our sign was for an auction on the 9th of February.
It wasn’t what I expected actually being a large, quite new private house that was converted to a B&B (or if you wish boutique hotel) by current (?) owners. For this reason it doesn’t quite work as it is set up for a family rather than individual guests. Simple example is the large veranda downstairs rather than individual ones from each room.
For us however, while it was a fine overnight stop, it did nothing to set it apart from a workaday B&B. If it wasn’t for the lovely ladies who run the place it would be below average.
We had a TINY bedroom with dual aspect windows and if it reminded me of the importance of space in any hotel room. Décor neat, bathroom nice, super clean and minibar welcome.
Making your own tea and coffee for breakfast is OK if you know what to measure but working as I do with a Nespresso machine at home the tiny cafetiere was a mystery. When the breakfast came it was a triumph of size and style over flavour.
On the bright side Merrijig Kitchen was just across the road for dinner and we had a delicious meal within about two minutes of the front door. This made our stay. One night was fine but glad we didn’t stay a second.

Great location and lovely views. Excellent rooms and service also good. Very nice breakfast. Wifi is unreliable for reasons which were unclear. Rather surprising for a hotel of this standard. Also it doesn't do evening means but there are plenty if places nearby. The chippie just down the road is very good value.

Having been given excellent reviews for this hotel we sought it out. We were asked to be there at a set time which really didnt suit as we were travelling along the great ocean road and didnt know exactly how long it would take. Whilst the room and breakfast was very good. we were given a very short availability time for breakfast. When we asked immediatelyafter breakfast if once we had checked out of our room we could use the lounge to check emails we were told no as the propriotress was ready to leave. She then stood by the front door to usher us out It was still before 10am. For the price we were disappointed with the service.
