Stayed at the Port Fairy YHA. The town was lovely, and we enjoyed the YHA. The owner was very welcoming and chatty, and the place, while not modern and up-to-date, was clean and comfortable. We only stayed one night, but I would have been happy to stay longer.

I stayed only for one night at Port Fairy YHA with a friend in a family room (had booked a double room but got upgraded). The staff was very welcoming and happy to help with finding a nice restaurant for dinner and giving tips on what to see in Port Fairy. Everything was clean and the big kitchen well equipped but the room and other amenities were in a desperate need of a big renovation. The showers for example were in a separate building outside and in a cold morning it wasn't really that pleasant.

The lady at reception was very friendly and helpful, however, I would not stay again at the port fairy YHA. We booked a $80 twin room with shared bathroom) all that was available - lots of places in port fairy had a 2 night minimum). The room ended up being a tiny attic room with a single bed and two bunk beds and a tiny window, very cramped. It was very cold and couldn't get the heater to work. The sheets didn't feel very clean and like a scratchy polyester and I found pubic hairs on the sheets. The shared bathroom had only one shower for females, so had to wait, the area was open so when in the shower felt cold, the water ran hot and cold, so not good. The bathroom could be cleaner. The hostel was taken over by families and kids late at night, sharing the apartment rooms. Noisy. Walls paper thin so could hear constant chatting in the rooms next room late at night. If the building was renovated and upgraded it could be a nice place to stay but it's not, doesn't have a good feeling about it, looks old, worn and tired. When it could have character and charm.

I would recommend going around the corner to the port fairy comfort inn. The comfort inn had a queen bed room with shared bathroom for the same price. Upstairs Bedroom looked lovely modern and clean, bathroom looked nice and only had to share with one other couple. The whole place looked charming, warm and inviting on a cold night. In a nice building.

First have to say that the lady who runs this place is very welcoming and really helpful, pointing out that there was live music in one of the nearby pubs, and a nice walk to take at sunset on Griffiths Island to catch a glimpse of wild wallabies and the Shearwater birds returning to nest.

However, the place itself and the annexes is in real need of a spruce up. I couldn't get my room door to lock, so kept my valuables in the car.

It is clean though, and cheap, so it can be forgiven those faults!

We are very impressed by the staff here - friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. Problem with our room was that the curtains could not cover up the windows completely, leaving us exposed to the corridor outside our room and the yard at the back. We didn't like it when there is a privacy problem with the room. There was also a problem with the shower where the water comes really slow and hot water did not come in a constant flow.

The facility in general is OK with a big shared kitchen, but just make sure you check your room before you decide to stay here.

Room Tip: Check curtains and shower

This is a nice little hostel, the staff are really friendly as ate the other guests. Rooms are quite tiny but well thought out. Nice big clean kitchen to cook in. Location is great.
