“OK for a night”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2007

Lorne is a strange place. We arrived after dark and it looked like a run down dump. The following morning, with the sun out and the ocean sparkling, it was a lovely seaside and surfing town.

We flew into Melbourne and drove out to Lorne - BEWARE - road signs in Melbourne seem non existant from the airport! - and didn't see much of the initial Ocean Road as it was getting dark.

We booked the Cumberland as a one night sleep over on the way along the Ocean Road as Lorne was the first reasonably sized place you came to. I suppose our problem with it was that it was a come down after places like Lizard Island, Lilianfels etc etc.

It is what it says - a resort complex of tidy if souless apartment style blocks overlooking the beach. Our room was part superb, part awful. The lounge, kitchen area was great, and in the morning had superb views of the ocean. However, the bathroom was a very odd shape and cramped, and the bedroom was just dreadful. The bed was a very small just about double and there was virtually no room for anything else. The bedroom also backs onto the corridors and walkways at the back of the block so was rather noisy.

The place also could have done with a better clean - long dark hairs in the bath/shower and on the bathroom floor.

There is a decent car park under the hotel, but arriving at night it all felt a bit threatening and deserted.

The view of the ocean makes up for a lot and it is not really expensive but we were glad to move on.

We stayed two nights in a one bedroom apartment with an ocean front balcony. The great ocean road is between the hotel and the ocean. I imagine this could be a setback, but fortunately during our stay the traffic was not very heavy. The apartment was spacious and very well kept. The living room was at the ocean front, kitchen and bathroom in the middle, bedroom in the back.
The kitchen was well equiped, we could prepare our meals without a problem. The bathroom was excellent. There was also a washing machine and dryer. The room had wireless internet, but we had a lot of problems to get connected (it did work eventually).
We enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and had a relaxing stay.

The website gives a more upmarket impression than when you drive into Lorne and discover some of the hotel rooms are directly over Lorne's parade of shops! After dragging all our luggage through the seedy underground car park we were pleasantly surprised to arrive in the living room of our one bedroom apartment, which was to our modern (quite plain) taste. Sitting on the balcony you can't see the shop fronts and road but focus on the sea view.

The window by the spa, overlooking the dining room table was a surprise, but there were blinds for privacy if you didn't want to carry on a conversation with your partner as they watched TV! We had been slightly worried about the reviews of noise from the pub, and with the bedrooms are next to the front door, by the gardens where barbeques were held. Luckily we weren't affected.

I didn't find the gym and didn't use the tiny pool and sun deck as they were packed (children having a wooping time in the pool while the parents crammed the small sun deck!).

The apartment wasn't the luxury we were expecting (the bedroom especially was very basic) but the living room was very nice, a place to chill and look at the view.

We land in Lorne as part of the summer and New Year’s Eve celebratory influx of visitors. We’re attending, and some of us are working at, the three day music and arts festival that is the Falls Festival. The Falls Festival is an annual event filled with the latest and greatest local and international acts along with arts and unusual acts held in front of 14,000 like-minded fans.

Coming from inner city Sydney, the Great Ocean Road and Southern Ocean seems is literally what we all needed – the fresh ocean air, the relaxed nature of the locals, (albeit we didn’t seem to come across many over this particular weekend) and the idea of being at the end of a very busy year.

The booking process was simple, in September when we decided to attend the festival all accommodation was already booked out! So, on the waiting list we went! A two-bedroom ocean-front apartment became available and it was all systems go. Arriving on the Friday of the festival was nightmarish – a snakelike queue leading from Torquay all the way to Lorne was in progression and it took nearly as long as two hours (its normally less than an hour). Checking in was quick and easy and we easily found our apartment with the complex’s map and instructions provided from the reception staff. Unfortunately there wasn’t any baggage trolleys so we were left with lugging everything to the lift and then to the apartment.

The two bedroom apartment comprises of one queen room and one room with two single beds. Both rooms have the basic side tables, reading lights and one sliding door cupboard for luggage. There was also a television in the queen room. The kitchen was outfitted with the bare minimum of crockery, glassware and cutlery. We requested a coffee plunger which couldn’t be provided and the front office staff quipped that “they don’t provide them, probably because of the café downstairs”. The bathroom has a spa with an overhead shower, to the left of the bathroom entrance; there is a small room with a separate toilet and a laundry but if there is someone using the bathroom you can’t get access to the toilet nor the laundry which is a design fault.

The lounge area had a sofa bed with two small soft chairs and a coffee table. A dining set for 6 in the corner and a LCD television which was handy for reviewing photos of the event each day/night. On the balcony which had the ocean view were two deck chairs and a small table. The apartment was very clean but it seemed the inclusions were very basic.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the time of year and the location of the apartment, that is, right on the corner at a busy roundabout and next to the Lorne pub, there was quite a bit of noise – music, seasonally-happy people and cars at night which was disappointing and annoying especially for the high season rates we were paying ($440 per night + GST) and the long days/nights we were working. We also asked to change our booking, providing over 3 days notice and we were told that unless they re-booked the room, we would be charged for the night as they have a 7 day change/cancellation policy.

All in all, if you’re after a quiet, relaxing place to stay, this is not the place. The combination of paying peak rates and the basic inclusions doesn’t make it value for money or feel like you’re getting what you paid for. Look for cheaper rates on the discount hotel sites and keep in mind the time of year, the Cumberland Lorne Resort could be a bargain. Then again, if you get in earlier, there’s better accommodation in Lorne for these prices.

I had never felt as unwelcomed as I was at the Cumberland. The resort staff were snooty. The restaurant waitress was rude. When my dessert had not arrived and everyone else was served, the waitressed asked if I had ordered anything. When I informed her what I requested she said "I had been calling out the xxx" and no body answered. I do not expect to be sitting at the edgfe of my chair waiting for my food order to be called out. I beileve it was her job to remember what we had orderd and if she could not remember, to approach the guests individually and not "call out the order". The food however was the only thing that matched the resort's 5 star "reputation". Furthermore, for $300 a night the hairdryer was old, sparks flew when I turned the switch on.

Would not stay there again.

We stayed here for a night while driving the Great Ocean Road in October 2005. The city and hotel were very empty at that time of year. We had a 1 bedroom suite with ocean view including a full kitchen (with dishwasher, microwave, fridge, stove), jacuzzi tub, washer/dryer, dining table, and balcony overlooking the ocean. The decor is great and the room is the size of an apartment! The staff was friendly and helpful and there was plenty of underground parking. We received champagne and chocolate for our honeymoon. The main street is just below the hotel so you can walk to the shops and restaurants. It's also a short drive up to the Erskine Falls area which is beautiful, the staff will give you a map and make recommendations.

Stayed over Christmas in a great apartment. The hotel is well appointed, clean and good facilities for all the family. We all enjoyed the resort. However, at peak times, beware of the ocean view apartments adjacent to the Lorne hotel(it's the local pub). It can be very noisy up to 3am and unless you are a sound sleeper you may be woken.
