“No longer recommended for breakfast”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2010

As a regular customer, I was interested to see what the new owners brought to the café.

Well. We were kept entertained by the complaints of those who had arrived before us, and at least one party left. After a mere 45 minute wait, our breakfast finally arrived. Most of it, anyway - some of the pre-paid order had been overlooked.

The egs were rubbery and overcooked, the tomatoes still cold in the middle and a green foreign item found in the spinach was passed around the table as a curiosity and identified as possibly a fertiliser granule. The (assumed) proprietor was apparently unaware that a chai teabag dunked in hot milk would not infuse (nor did it).

At least the spider that I observed descending from the ceiling landed on someone else's milk jug.

Perhaps they were having a bad day or they were short-staffed, but the unruffled and unapologetic nature of the staff made me suspect that this was business as usual.

Mad Cowes on the Esplanade will be getting our business until we hear of another change in ownership, which I suspect will not be long in coming.

“A wasted afternoon spent waiting for food...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2010

A wasted afternoon spent waiting for food and terrible coffee. It took half an hour before our bitter coffee arrived. The cafe was busy when we had arrived but at no point during ordering our food were we told just how busy the kitchen was. After an hour we inquired about what had happened to our food and we were told that they had just started to begin cooking our food. We were given excuses that they'd been busy, but seriously they had plenty of opportunities to to notify customers they were backed up in the kitchen and let them decide if they wanted to wait. We were pretty much fed up not to mention nolonger hungry so we requested a refund. This request was met, but I should mention that we were not correctly refunded our full amount. Another customer from a different table returned her meal and requested a refund as well after also waiting an hour. Quite a disappointing experience considering the good reviews on the food.

“Friendly and great food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2010

Visited several times over the Anzac Weekend when they were extremely hectic. Coffee was good (not fantastic but then I'm super picky), scones were huge and delicious and the full breakfasts the 6 of us had were delicious. My daughter rates the pancakes with berries better than the ones she had recently at Cafe Sweethearts, and that says something.
Definately return. And lots of gluten free options if that's what you are looking for thanks to the new owners.

“Best food on Phillip Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2008

Looking for the best place to find quality food on Phillip Island? Look no further than the Silverleaves Store. They use the freshest of ingredients including free range eggs. Everything is cooked on location. Breakfast all day, specials board. Lots of biscuits and cakes. Outdoor eating area around the verandah and a side courtyard. Rooms full of gourmet gifts and a wine cellar. Greeted by friendly staff that know there stuff. I recommend this place to anyon visiting phillip island.
