“Our go-to bakery in Benalla”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2014

We've been to Hide's bakery many times over the past year, which tells you something, doesn't it? It has usually been for lunch, but sometimes for afternoon tea after the big weekly shopping expedition in Benalla.

Tip: try to make your lunchtime visit either an early lunch, say 11.30, or a late lunch, say 1.00 pm to avoid queues of people wanting sandwiches specially prepared. If you do run into the lunchtime queue, be prepared for quite a wait, slightly frazzled staff and difficulty getting a table. At other times the staff are delightful. Note that you do have to carry your own food from the counter, but staff do bring out any hot drinks or milkshakes to your table.

The decor is attractive and homey (although I preferred the formerly green walls to the current lilac) and the range of pies, pasties, cakes etc. is wide, made on the premises and very delicious. Pricing is fair, not cheap but no worse than elsewhere these days.

I wouldn't make a special detour to Benalla to go there, but it is definitely our preferred cafe when we are there. Try it next time you are in Benalla.

“Not as good as expected from earlier reviews”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 11, 2014

Nice country bakery but food quality and price not as good as we hoped. Quiche was warm on edges but cold in the middle. Friendly and polite staff.

“Heavenly cakes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 8, 2014

Stopped here on my way to Canberra from Melbourne. A little gem. Country style decor with black and white small tiles on the floor and some natural brick walls. Service was friendly and quick. Clean shop. Sold breads, bakery products, pies, and small meals. Prices varied from $4.60 pies to $5.60 gourmet pies right to the most expensive dish which was bacon and eggs at $15.60. I had a shepherd's pie which was wholesome and fresh and one of their heavenly cakes. Waitress said that all cakes were made on the premises. My husband had a generous egg and bacon roll - plenty of bacon and two eggs in a fresh sesame seed bun. It was a satisfying experience.

“$15 for a focaccia?”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2014

For one focaccia? Prep time 10 minutes? Based on hourly rate of staff plus super, insurance, etc, etc, cost of ten minutes is about $4.

Raw materials: (bacon, egg plant, lettuce, avocado, chutney) $4?

Total cost $8

So nearly a 100% mark up, and we were fool enough to pay it. But only once.
