We've been to Hide's bakery many times over the past year, which tells you something, doesn't it? It has usually been for lunch, but sometimes for afternoon tea after the big weekly shopping expedition in Benalla.
Tip: try to make your lunchtime visit either an early lunch, say 11.30, or a late lunch, say 1.00 pm to avoid queues of people wanting sandwiches specially prepared. If you do run into the lunchtime queue, be prepared for quite a wait, slightly frazzled staff and difficulty getting a table. At other times the staff are delightful. Note that you do have to carry your own food from the counter, but staff do bring out any hot drinks or milkshakes to your table.
The decor is attractive and homey (although I preferred the formerly green walls to the current lilac) and the range of pies, pasties, cakes etc. is wide, made on the premises and very delicious. Pricing is fair, not cheap but no worse than elsewhere these days.
I wouldn't make a special detour to Benalla to go there, but it is definitely our preferred cafe when we are there. Try it next time you are in Benalla.
