Surfside Backpackers
Reviewed January 10, 2013

My girlfriend and I stayed at this place for two nights. The lady who solely runs the place was extremely accommodating and friendly (she even lent us bath towels for free) However, the place has seen better times, but for the price and the fact that it is the only hostel / backpackers in town, I was happy to stay there. There was also ample hot water and there never was an issue with shower availbility. The room we stayed in had a great view of the Coast! For any price conscience traveller I would definately recommend.

This is the place to stay travelling the great ocean road. Really cosy place with a great view of the ocean. We stayed here during the australian winter, but Robin knows how to keep you warm; electricity blankets and we slept like roses. The place is a little old fashioned, but that is just the charm!

Really truly mean the title above. The most relaxed friendly atmosphere I've found yet on my travels in Australia. The lovely lady owner Robin keeps this place and it's staff at just the right temperature. With a tempting hammock on the porch, clean and comfortable sleeping, washing and cooking facilities and a nice crowd.

We were lucky enough to stay on two occasions and the first time we ended up having a traditional Irish Folk music session with a small group of fellow happy Irish which warmed our hearts. The second time we ended up having an impromptu Latin Dance class with a couple of French girls.

Anyway...the message is...don't drive past this place..in fact you should make it a stop on your itinerary and make sure to tell Robin the Irish Photographer guy sent you!

Enjoy the beachside view!

I really liked this backpackers. It's quaint with small town seaside charm. It's definitely not slick and polished but you don't need that here. Stroll back from the beach, lounge around on the chairs and hammock, have a few drinks, cook dinner and watch the sun go down with any others you meet in this relaxed friendly place. The owner will do anything to help and helped us the next day with our plans. I think its great the place isn't a late night party place but you are still able to enjoy yourself. I'll come back here again.

We loved staying here. It was refreshingly chilled out and had a lovely vibe. The lady who runs the place is lovely and helpful and from what I can tell seems to do nearly everything there herself. She gave us awesome tips on where to see the koalas and the best stop offs. The rooms are basic but spotless, the kitchen in our section was brand new and perfect. The communal areas were very quirky with lots of retro furniture and bits and bobs to look at. The only downside was the bathrooms were rather like being at a budget campsite but hey everything else made up for it.

I'm a bit surprised about the excellent ratings this hostel has received here. Okay, I know it's not a hotel, but seriously, you'd better be sleeping in a tent. But if high hygiene is not your thing, go for this place.

We are a 30 year old couple backpacking around the world. This is the worst quality accommodation so far (and we came from Asia). You pay, after all, 56 dollars for two people - add only a little, and you'll be able to find much, much nicer places. We stayed here as we took the Great ocean road and hadn't booked accommodation in advance. These were the only beds available in Apollo Bay, so we had to take them.

Both the rooms and shared facilities were really dirty. Spider webs all over, lot of stuff on the floor. Toilets and bathrooms full of small bugs and dirty. We found two spiders - one in our bed, one on our backpack. The worst is still to come. In the morning a girl staying in the same room found a huge bedbug on her bed, she had also been bitten. The lady in charge of the place told us that they had just sprayed the beds couple of days ago, "but it's no use of using professionals, as the bedbugs always come back". Nice attitude. As far as I'm concerned, these huge bedbugs are not a nice thing to take back home from a crappy hostel.

The place is in a serious need of good cleaning and a facelift, even though the kitchen was new.
